Theme 1 (Aug. 28 + Sept. 5): Introduction to New Media Studies General introduction to different themes and approaches to new media. We will be discussing what is new in new media, and how we avoid the trap of technological determinism, and stay critical towards our subject. Introduction to the co-construction of media and society. Theme 2 (Sept. 19+26): Communication studies and media paradigms General introduction to communication studies and models. Different ways of looking at media from a science studies perspective. What is academic research? Research methods. How to formulate research questions and how to make a presentation. Theme 3 (OCT. 3+10): Sociology and media The construction of identity and communities in social media. Theme 4 (Oct. 24): Interview Techniques for collecting research material and doing interviews Theme 5 (Oct. 31+ Nov. 7+14): Getting more concrete Last three weeks we will dive into more casebased research and focus on three tendencies within new media development: Political perspective, Aesthetics and entertainment industries, New media economics. Theme 7 (Nov. 25): Mobile Technologies Explores social and political implications of mobile technologies. NB: This workshop is carried out in collaboration with the Technology and Society course and takes place on a Friday. Theme 8 (Nov. 28): Summary What you might need?

Podcast: Marshall McLuhan at 100 To the best of our knowledge, Public Radio International. 07.31.2011 (One hour podcast: http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_detail.php?siteId=4819402). Listen to podcast while you are doing the dishes. Gives a very good introduction to McLuhan and to how you can predict the future. Listening to this podcast rst makes it much easier to read the other texts. Lister et. al. (2008): New Media A Critical Introduction. London and New York, Routledge. "New Media and New Technologies pp. 44-99. (45 pages in textbook). This text is a bit long, if it is to much you can skip page 66-77 and 87-97. McLuhan, Marshall (1996): Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. Massachusett, The MIT Press. The Medium is the Massage pp. 3-21. (19 pages in compendium). McLuhan is the classic over all classics in media theory, and even if you nd him difcult, read the text anyway and you can then say that you have read McLuhan! Introduction to Raymond Williams: http://sevan029.grads.digitalodu.com/blog/?p=12 Since we are comparing McLuhan with Williams, it is good idea to have a short look into who he is, besides the information you get in text book, but dont use to much tie on it.
