COURSE OUTLINE in GENERAL SOCIOLOGY (4GENSOC)

COURSE TITLE: General Sociology (4GENSOC) Course Description: This introductory course invites the students to learn sociology by looking at his / her formation as a human being, growing up and living in society to understand the dynamics of social processes and social change. It equips the students with a broader understanding of culture and society; the application of concepts and theories on the fundamental and organizational functions of society and the application of methods and approaches of social investigation are emphasized in explaining social realities. The understanding and analysis of current Philippine issues such as those pertaining to marriage, family planning, migration, substance abuse, health and population, governance and corruption and environmental concerns are integrated in all discussions. Lessons on peace education are also included.

Credit: 3 Units Pre-requisite: NONE COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the semester, the students are expected to: 1. Identify and define the basic concepts and theoretical concerns of sociology; 2. Apply the classical and contemporary sociological theories in analyzing current social issues and social problems which affect human society; 3. Articulate ones role and contribution in upholding the values of social awareness and social responsibility; 4. Show concern and sensitivity to social problems; 5. Respect differences in ethnicity, culture, education, social class or status;
