Ten years ago, the Twin Tow-
ers came down during the most
brazen terroristic attack this
country has even seen. Everyone
throughout the country will rec-
ognize the 10th anniversary of 9-
11, and local representatives are
calling for a 10th anniversary re-
membrance.
The township will host a 10th
anniversary remembrance of the
9-11 attacks on Sunday, Sept. 11, at
2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal
Church, 207 W. Main St. The 200
Club of Burlington County and
its president, Peter Clifford, will
host the remembrance ceremony.
In addition, the First Presbyte-
rian Church of Moorestown, 101
Bridgeboro Road, will have a spe-
cial contemplative Service of
Healing and Hope to remember
the 10th anniversary of 9-11 at 5
p.m. in the Commons Room on
Sunday, Sept. 11.
The event is open to the pub-
lic, and I encourage anyone to at-
tend. This will be the seventh
year we host this, Clifford said.
Were in support of all police,
fire and EMS services in the
county. Theres a 200 Club in
every county in the state.
The ceremony is intended to
commemorate the 10th anniver-
sary of the nations tragedy and
will honor all of those who died
and also pay tribute to the first re-
sponders including police offi-
cers, firefighters and emergency
services personnel.
Members of municipal, county
and state law enforcement agen-
cies, along with area firefighters
and emergency medical person-
nel, will attend the memorial
prayer service, Clifford said. Also,
emergency coordinators and rep-
resentatives of local, county and
state government will be in atten-
dance.
One of the scheduled guest
speakers for the memorial serv-
ice will be Moorestown Firefight-
er Jonathan S. Clifford.
My son is a keynote speaker.
He served at Ground Zero. He vol-
unteered and was the youngest to
volunteer to serve at Ground
Zero, he said.
The event is a non-political
event, Clifford stressed, and just a
ceremony to recognize all those
who gave their lives in the attacks

By all accounts, Moorestown
Township got off pretty easy in
the wake of Hurricane Irene, ac-
cording to township representa-
tives.
The Category One hurricane
came and went, but didnt cause
as much damage as originally es-
timated.
Sgt. Lee Lieber, emergency
management coordinator for the
township, said there was some
flooding and several downed
trees, which caused some difficul-
ties, but, overall, Moorestown
fared well during the storm.
We had been preparing all
week with our emergency man-
agement team in conjunction
with Burlington County Emer-
gency Management. Our emer-
gency management center was
open from 6 p.m. Saturday night
until 11 a.m. Sunday morning,
Lieber said. We prepared for the
worst case scenario, but we
dodged a bullet.
Mayor John Button praised the
township staff for its response to
the storm and preparation for
what could have been a disaster.
As for the township, I com-
mend our township staff, and in
particular our emergency man-
agement coordinator, Detective
Sgt. Lee Lieber, our department of
public works, our police depart-
ment and our fire and EMS per-
sonnel for their diligent prepara-
tion and their intensive efforts
during the storm, he said.
Events such as this are very
complex to manage, and they did
a wonderful job, as evidenced by
the favorable responses from
many of our residents.
I was impressed, as well, by
the extremely well-coordinated
and communicated efforts from
our governor to keep mayors and
other public officials updated be-
fore, during and after the storm,
he said.
The major damage resulted
from downed trees during the
storm.
The high winds, coupled with
saturated ground, led to about 12

incidents of downed trees in the
township, Lieber said. Several
trees brought down electrical
wires as well, he said, and there
were still sections in the town-
ship that didnt have power early
last week.
Lieber said there were other
trees that came down during the
storm, but they did not cause any
significant damage to township
property or electrical services.
Portions of Collins Park, Stan-
wick Road, Albany Road, and
Maple Court all experienced
some degree of flooding, Lieber
said.
Albany Road and Stanwick
Road were both closed for por-
tions of the storm, but are cur-
rently reopened.
Were back to normal right
now. There are some areas right
now in the township dont have
power, but theyre doing the best
they can do, Lieber said last
week.
Id like to congratulate our
emergency management team,
including our private and public
partners, for working so well to-
gether, preparing, and having this
whole event come off with mini-
mal problems. Without us work-
ing together and our volunteers,
this wouldnt have happened, he
said.
He also thanked residents for
reporting any incidents to the
township and for heeding the
warnings of the OEM and staying
off the roadways during the
storm. Any resident with any
other incidents should contact
the township department of pub-
lic works at 235-0912.

The first comic book worth
anything that I ever bought was
Avengers #4.
OK, my parents actually
bought it for me in 1979. It was $20
and in pretty crappy condition. It
was a big deal because the issue,
which is dated March 1964, fea-
tured the first appearance of Cap-
tain America since World War II.
I still have that comic and,
though I wouldnt sell it, I figure
its worth $100. The same comic in
near mint condition is now sell-
ing on eBay for $15,000. So it goes
in the world of collecting comic
books.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, Harriet
Venzie, formerly of Moorestown,
celebrated her 100th birthday at
the home of Felix and Agneiszka
Polich on Central Avenue. In at-
tendance were all three of her
children, Fred, a graduate of
Moorestown High School in 1960,
David, a graduate in 1969, and Di-
anne Feltoon, a graduate of 1970.
Harriets grandchildren and
great-grandchildren came in
from San Diego, Los Angeles,
New York City and Philadelphia.
A total of eight nieces and
nephews traveled from Wales,
England, and Perth, Scotland, her
birthplace. Friends from as far as
Germany and Corpus Christi,
Texas took the total attendance to
more than 100. On Sunday, Di-
anne and Alan Feltoon of
Moorestown hosted a family
brunch at the Riverton Country
Club.
Harriet, currently residing in
Marlton, moved to Moorestown
from Merchantville with her hus-
band, Walt (deceased), in 1950.
Still living independently, Harriet
regularly travels to Moorestown
to visit with family and friends.
She has been a member of the

The second annual Dunkin
Donuts Philadelphia Regional
Scholarship Program is awarding
a total of $25,000 to 25 local stu-
dents who were selected based on
their positive academic record,
demonstrated leadership ability
and a commitment to their
schools and communities. Each
student receives a $1,000 scholar-
ship to pursue a full-time under-
graduate course of study at an ac-
credited two-year or four-year col-
lege, university or vocational-
technical school this fall.
On behalf of Dunkin Donuts
and all of the franchisees in the
Greater Philadelphia Region, it is
my pleasure to announce these 25
students as recipients of the sec-
ond annual Dunkin Donuts

ship Program, said Perry Shah,
Dunkin Donuts franchisee and
chairman of the Dunkin Donuts
Advertising Committee for the
Greater Philadelphia market.
We created this program as an
extension of our local commit-
ment to this region and to help
support the guests and families
who run on Dunkin every day.
We are very proud of these exem-
plary young men and women and
their accomplishments and wish
them success as they continue in
their academic careers.

Every year, Lippincott and
Smith bring monarch butterflies
into their classrooms and share
with their students their passion
for the lifecycle and migratory
patterns of these fascinating in-
sects.
Their FEP workshop is expect-
ed to last approximately an hour
and a half. It will end with the re-
lease of one or more adult butter-
flies at a time of the year when
adult monarchs are about to em-
bark on their journey across the
Golf of Mexico to their wintering

T
his is one of those things that
should not have to be said, but,
sadly, indeed has to be shouted
from the mountaintops: Every child
should feel safe going to school.
For far too many children, school is
a terrifying, hostile place to visit.
When these children go to school, they
are the targets of bullies. They know
no joy, only torment. The fear and pain
caused by verbal, emotional and even
physical abuse not only disrupt their
academic pursuits, but follow them
home and impact every facet of their
lives.
In New Jersey, we hope, that is about
to change.
Earlier this year, the state passed
what some people call the most strin-
gent anti-bullying policy in the nation.
In addition to mandating training
and reporting, the law states that bul-
lies can be suspended or expelled from
school. And that is what should hap-
pen.
Every teacher and administrator
knows who the bullies are. Its time for
the troublemakers to hit the streets.
Let Mom or Dad deal with it, but keep
other students safe.
In the next few weeks, associate edi-
tor Sean Murphy will be writing a
comprehensive article on the new poli-
cy and how schools will be implement-
ing it. He wants to hear your ideas,
too. Not so much individual stories
and complaints, but thoughts about
how schools finally can take a stand
against bullying and make sure that
no student ever again has to worry
about being a target.
As we said, our view is a simple one:
Toss the troublemakers out of the
school and, if they dont get the mes-
sage that they have to behave, dont let
them come back.
Send your ideas to
smurphy@elauwitmedia.com.
Bullying the bullies
Bullies head back to school, but hopefully not for long
Say goodbye, bullies

law. Let us know what you think
should be done to keep students safe.
Alcohol sales wont fix the
malls problems
In the current debate as to whether
Moorestown should continue to be a dry
town, somehow the Moorestown Mall
seems to have taken center stage. My feel-
ing is that the problems of the Moorestown
Mall are different than what some naively
believe can be fixed with a Band Aid in the
form of a few glasses of vintage wine
served at so-called fine dining restau-
rants.
Malls are primarily a conglomerate of
retail, emphasis on retail, outlets with
one or more major anchor stores. As such,
malls are not food courts, although, grant-
ed, food stores are a part of the mix, but
only a very small and insignificant part.
Therefore, it is deceptive and irresponsible
to infer that alcohol is the simultaneous so-
lution to the Moorestown Malls and our
tax problems. This faulty thinking can get
us involved in an unnecessary bail out of a
seemingly inept mall management and, in
the process, we run the risk of doing ir-
reparable harm to the desirable and
unique character of Moorestown.
Malls are a huge business, and their suc-
cess or failure depends on the economy,
management and competition from nearby
new or renewed malls. To remain competi-
tive, all malls periodically have to be updat-
ed, refurbished and revitalized and, in the
process, are bought and sold many times.
Let us be brutally frank and realistic.
PREIT is in business for themselves, and
their prime and only responsibility is to
themselves. Moorestown is one of their
many business locations, which just hap-
pens to serve their purpose, and beyond
that, they have no loyalty to us or anyone
else.
Consequently, in this type of environ-
ment, we, and we alone, have the responsi-
bility to be protecting our turf and not fall
for the self-serving scare tactics of a tempo-
rary business owner in our town. Further-
more, when PREIT bought the mall, they
were fully aware that Moorestown was dry.
I wonder why, after so many years, they
suddenly are not able to operate successful-
ly in this very same environment. Could it
be they are having management problems?
If so, these can be resolved by an internal
re-organization or selling to a more experi-
enced and qualified company, and this
might end up being beneficial to all con-
cerned. Regardless, whether with the cur-
rent or another owner, the Moorestown
Mall is not going to disappear. It is here to
stay and will continue to be a tax base for
the township.
Much is at stake. Please be careful of
those who are trying to entice or scare us
with unsubstantiated tax benefits or conse-
quences, bundled with a potentially harm-
ful bail out of a here today, gone tomorrow
owner of the Moorestown Mall. In view of
this, I urge you to vote no in November
on both referendums and let me strongly
emphasize the word both.
Jack Sinunu
Not illegal,
just immoral
It is unimaginable that our elected offi-
cials would violate the trust and steward-
ship of our Open Space funds. This is not
their money; it is our money. We voted to
raise our taxes so that we could preserve
some of the pastoral beauty that once pre-
vailed in our town. But
Gallo/Button/Testa just dont see it that
way. The fancy private sports clubs need to
be fed, and so does Testas lacrosse equip-
ment business.
Mr. Coleman has again anointed the idea
as legal by a convoluted and torturous in-
terpretation of the law. He may be right. It
may be legal; its just immoral. With this
group, this appears not to be a problem.

Krispy Kreme has opened its new South
Jersey location which happens to be near
The Yaks home base. And, judging from
the lines outside of the shop, the locals
cant get enough of these doughnuts.
But, while other doughnut makers and
sellers might be worried that Krispy
Kreme could cut into their business, they
should take comfort in knowing that, in-
stead of KK, they could have been up
against shop owners in Greece, who hire
wrestlers to intimidate their competition.
To The Yaks knowledge, Krispy Kreme
has not hired any former wrestling cham-

not to say that it couldnt happen.

attic? The answer, like most any-
thing else is it depends.
Scott said anything prior to
1970 in good condition is worth
something.
Condition is everything, he
said, noting comics with the first
appearance of characters are also
usually worth more. For example,
Green Lantern first appears in
Showcase #22 in the late 1950s
and, depending on the condition,
copies worth can range from
$5,000 to $50,000.
The Holy Grail is Action
Comics #1, the 1938 edition fea-
turing the first appearance of Su-
perman, estimated to be worth
more than $1 million if youre the
lucky owner of a mint condition
copy.
Collecting today can be diffi-
cult, because publishers some-
times print the same issue with
several different covers. Still,
many smaller publishers such as
Dark Horse, IDW and Image are
doing well at his store, Scott said.
The Comic Station
(http://www.thecomicstation.com)
also carries titles from Dynamite
Entertainment from Runnemede.
Today, the comic book world is
buzzing about DC 52 referring to
the fact that DC Comics
(http://www.dccomics.com) is re-
rebooting all 52 of its titles to
start over with the first in the se-
ries.

By Mayor John Button
One of the benefits of service
on town council is that you in-
crease your knowledge exponen-
tially as to the complexities of
managing our township in a fis-
cally-prudent manner while striv-
ing to keep it a very special place
in which to live. Unfortunately,
you also find that the road to suc-
cess as a public servant is bumpy.
This year, we have two issues
that are particularly complicated,
given the emotional aspects of
each that have inspired a vocal
number of our residents to attend
council meetings, write letters to
the editor and try to organize
around their particular point(s)
of view. They both could have tax
implications, as well, which
heightens their importance. Let
me offer a brief perspective on
each of these:
Pennsylvania Real Estate In-
vestment Trust (PREIT), owner of
the Moorestown Mall (with the
exception of three large depart-
ment stores) has, at its own initia-
tive and expense, initiated an ef-
fort to place two referendums on
the ballot for our November elec-
tion that would, if approved, le-
galize the sale of alcoholic bever-
ages and confine those sales to
fine dining restaurants at that
specific location. After validation
and certification by our township
clerk, council took the action they
are compelled to take by law,
adopting a resolution to place
those questions on the ballot.
Contrary to what many might
want you to believe, this initiative
has not been sponsored or driven
by council. It is a PREIT initia-
tive, motivated by what they be-
lieve gives them the best opportu-
nity to succeed with their mall in-
vestment, as they have explained
it to me.
A group of private citizens,
concerned about our ratable and
taxes, have also begun to speak
out on this initiative. Just as I
urge each of you to do, I will be
seeking additional facts and
weighing them relative to what I
consider to be in the best inter-
ests of our residents and taxpay-
ers, in making my voting deci-
sion. One thing I assure you, how-
ever, is that I wont begin my deci-
sion-making process with the
answer and then try to find a
way to make the facts fit that
opinion. We must each gather and
consider the facts when weighing
decisions, such as this, that have
lasting implications.
The other issue surrounds the
use of our Open Space, Recre-
ation, Farmland and Historic
Preservation Fund (OSRF&HPF).
At our last council meeting, we
were asked, by a group of our citi-
zens who actively sought to put a
referendum on the November bal-
lot but failed in that effort, if
council would hold a special
meeting focused on this topic to
consider placing a question on
the ballot that removed one of the
authorized uses namely, and I
quote that use in full: Develop-
ment of lands acquired for recre-
ation and conservation purpos-
es. In rendering my position, I
indicated a willingness to have a
special meeting, believing more
information-sharing can be help-
ful when things remain unclear
or unresolved. However, I ques-
tioned whether wed have time,
taking into account all circum-
stances, to get a question on the
ballot if we ultimately decided to
take that action.
To be clear, despite my willing-
ness to have a meeting, I personal-
ly believe our actions on council,
since 2009 when I joined, have
confirmed our collective commit-
ment to Open Space acquisition
and development. Our
OSRF&HPF is healthy and in no
jeopardy of diminishing to the
point we could not make acquisi-
tions of properties we consider
strategically important. In fact,
current projections indicate that,
at the current funding level, the
OSRF&HPF balance could reach
a level approximating $5 million
by 2028, when the existing ordi-
nance, authorizing a tax of a min-
imum of 1 cent per $100 of valua-
tion (yielding approximately
$464,000 in 2011) to 6 cents per $100
dollars of valuation, expires. Its
important to also note that, be-
cause council decides to spend
fund money on a particular proj-
ect, for an authorized use, in one
year does not mean that they will
automatically make that same de-
cision in another year. This fund,
and the state statute that created
it, gives them flexibility that is
critically important as they man-
age each years expenditures ver-
sus budget.
I remain solidly in favor of our
voters deciding difficult issues,
and I believe they did so on this
topic, overwhelmingly (and con-
sistent with both the state of New
Jersey and Burlington County),
back in 2007. I am hard pressed to
see why council would want to tie
its hands further, in this difficult
economy and recognizing other
tax obligations we have pending
for future years, by placing a
question on the ballot at its own
initiative that could further re-
strict its options for managing fi-
nances to the benefit of our tax-
payers. I also continue to question
how many of our residents would
really want to approve new lan-
guage that would result in the
need to increase taxes for projects
that can now qualify to be covered
by taxes already being paid to the
fund.
I welcome the opportunity to
speak with groups in town, when-
ever possible, to discuss township
issues. The more we communi-
cate, with facts as the basis for
our discussion, the better well
understand each other at the end
of the day. This is a difficult era,
and most of us are busier than
weve ever been. To so many of
you who continue to express your
appreciation and confidence in
us, I offer my profound thanks.
As I interpret our role on town
council in its simplest form, it is
to prudently act on behalf of our
taxpayers to minimize our tax
burden while preserving key
services, and to assure we always
strive to maintain, or enhance,
the quality of life for our resi-
dents.
We continually strive to fulfill
that commitment and thank you
for the opportunity to serve this
great community.

Molly Maid of NW Burlington County
A message from the mayor
Now that the flood waters are
receding and residents are assess-
ing the damage to their homes,
the Burlington County Office of
Consumer Affairs is alerting
homeowners to be extremely
wary of the predatory activities
of fly-by-night home improve-
ment contractors.
Thats not all.
Natural disasters also often
give rise to phony charities who
falsely claim to be raising funds
to assist victims. And, as if that
werent enough, warnings about
gasoline price gouging are also
circulating throughout the state.
Our residents have spent the
last week preparing for and bat-
tling the worst that Hurricane
Irene had to throw at us, Free-
holder Mary Ann OBrien said.
Now they have to be prepared for
the potential consumer abuses
that often arise from these types
of emergencies.
Residents need to guard them-
selves against scammers posing
as legitimate home improvement
contractors, OBrien added, not-
ing these also include storm
chasers those scam artists
from other states who descend
upon storm victims.
Whether they are approached
by contractors or initiating the
contact, homeowners should be
sure to obtain the contractors
state registration number.
They can then call the county
Consumer Affairs Office at 609-
265-5054 to find out if the registra-
tion is valid and if there is a
record of complaints.
No money should change
hands until this information is
sought and received, said Renee
Borstad, Consumer Affairs direc-
tor.
She said that consumers
should also contact her office
about a questionable charity that
asserts it is collecting money to
assist hurricane victims.
Finally, on the topic of gas
gouging, the law is clear.
The law prohibits an excessive
price increase of 10 percent or
more above the price at which it
was sold just prior to the hurri-
cane. Moreover, New Jersey law
prohibits gas stations from
changing the retail price of motor
fuel more than once in a 24-hour
period.
Anyone with any evidence of
price gouging should contact
Consumer Affairs immediately,
Borstad said. We will investi-
gate.

turning several key players for
the 2011 season and will look to
defends its BCSL Liberty, BC
Title, and South Jersey III Title.
Last year, the team compiled a
record of 22-4, Head Coach Bill
Kingston said. Kingston has a ca-
reer 694-75 record in the past 29
years. He will be joined by assis-
tant coaches Ann Call and Ronnie
Hughes.
Breezy Maravich will be a first
singles competitor, Shelby Burke

First doubles Kelsey Ham and
second doubles Lauren Culbert-
son will return to the varsity
squad as well.
Other players competing for
spots include Rachel Bass, Kelly
Hopkins, Sarah Kim, Ally
Sweeney, Kelsey Mercer and
Amanda Zajac. The exact posi-
tions in the line-up are being con-
tested now.
The outlook is promising with
a number of returning starters.
Whether it is a special season will
depend on how much players con-
tinue to improve, Kingston said.
The Moorestown Classic will

Included in the field are the fol-
lowing teams: Bishop Eustace,
Cherokee, East Brunswick, Had-
donfield, Holmdel, Millville,

On Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.,
Moorestown AARP is going to
have, one of its very own special
members, Ms. Jane Clifford, give
a program on the latest on health-
care reform at the First United
Methodist Church, 46 E. Camden
Ave. in Moorestown.
She has been an active member
and volunteer of Moorestown
AARP Chapter for 13 years and
has been its president from 2002
to 2004. After that, she started
working as a volunteer for the
state office in Princeton as
Burlington County coordinator
for Advocacy Issues. This has
brought her in contact with our
local congresspersons, the latest
being Jon Runyon. Clifford has
represented seniors on the many
issues that have been associated
with various bills voted upon by
the Legislature.
She has been a member of the
speakers bureau for five-plus
years and has given numerous
talks to church groups, AARP
Chapters, and Rotary Clubs in
South Jersey. Some of the sub-
jects have been identity theft,
AARP today, and health-care re-
form.
Cliffords purpose is to give the
groups she talks to current infor-
mation that they can use to make
wise decisions.
These programs are part of
AARPs latest effort to ensure
that Social Security and Medicare
remain secure in the coming
years.
Not only does she volunteer
diligently for AARP, but she is
also currently president pro temp
of the new village group which
is being formed in Moorestown
which will include surrounding
area. It enables seniors to age in
their own homes.
There are 50 established vil-
lages in the USA and more than
100 more forming. This organiza-
tion has been approved and writ-
ten about by AARP National. So
everyone is invited to come out,
learn about the latest in health-
care reform, and she will be avail-
able to answer any of your ques-
tions.

The Moorestown Library host-
ed a special event for participants
in the Teen Summer Reading Pro-
gram.
The object of Silent Library
(based on the MTV show by the
same title), was to complete silly
and disgusting challenges, all
while staying totally quiet.
Teen Librarian Rosy Hender-
son hosted the event, while li-
brary staffers Jen Dunne and
Denise DiBlasio judged the activi-
ties based on effort, creativity,
and the ability to remain com-
pletely silent.
Activities included applying
makeup on a friend while blind-
folded, making a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich without using
your hands (one clever contestant
used her bare feet), and drinking
milk mixed with ginger or garlic
powder.
The top three winners chose
from a variety of prizes, but every
contestant walked away with
something including a glowing
sense of accomplishment in the
face of silence.

services at the Moorestown Li-
brary, check out
