THE SALEM AREA WOMANS CLUB WILL BEGIN ITS 88TH YEAR on Wednesday, September 14th at the Mackenzie Chapel in the First United Presbyterian Church on West Broadway in Salem. The Membership Tea will begin at 1 p.m. and be hosted by chairman Irene Baldwin with Rose Marie Battle, Rita Crepeau, Doris Eriksson and Gerry Jeffrey. Members are reminded that the Womans Club popular Buck-A-Book program will continue this year. All proceeds go to local food banks. After the Tea and a brief business meeting, Connie Brooks, proprietor of Battenkill Books in Cambridge, returns to describe several new book titles. Ms. Brooks will then introduce well-known Saratoga author David Pitkin who will be the featured speaker for the meeting. In 1974, following a major illness, he began a quest for enlightenment in parapsychology and developed an expertise in numerology. He had visited a haunted barn in 1968 and, following a study of the Riley House in Saratoga Springs, NY, became a dedicated collector of the details of regional hauntings. Mr. Pitkin is the author of eight books, including his newest New England Ghosts, as well as New York State Ghosts Volumes I and II, and Haunted Saratoga County. He will regale the group with some ghost stories as well as his own otherworldly experiences. All guests are welcome to attend.

THIRD ANNUAL HOOSICK PUNKIN CHUNKIN COMPETITION- The 3rd Annual Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza is a little over a month away and teams are already preparing for the exciting Punkin Chunkin competition. Last year five teams participated and the competition was intense. The crowd loved the spectacle and cheered wildly when the event was won on the final shot. Organizers are hoping the excitement was contagious and even more teams join the fun this year! Is it your year to win? The goal of the punkin chunkin is to create a non-motorized machine to launch pumpkins at targets from 100 to 250 feet away. Each team has three shots to hit the targets including a moving target that earns a bonus. Points are earned for distance and accuracy. The winning team receives the Golden Pumpkin Award, as well as a check for $250. The competition is open to all families, businesses, organizations, groups of friends. Registration information and competition rules are available online at www.hoosickyouth.org. The Punkin Chunkin is part of the Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, set for September 23-25, 2011 in the Village of Hoosick Falls. The chunkin will be held on Saturday, September 24 at the Town of Hoosick Athletic Fields. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and teams must be ready for a safety inspection at 9 a.m. The competition begins at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to come and watch the excitement. Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza is a pride and tradition initiative organized by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3). Local sponsors and community members work together to make the event a success each year. To be part of this community-building event, contact Aelish or Beth at 518-686-9050 or visit www.hoosickyouth.org. IRENE DEALS A DEVASTATING BLOW TO THE CCC The Historic Salem Courthouse complex including the Courthouse Community Center, sustained serious flood damage due to the White Creek surge caused by Irene. There was 4-5 feet of water raging through the Courthouse basement destroying the pottery studio, damaging newly restored activity rooms, and the extent of the damage to the heating system is still being ascertained. The Youth Activity Barn used for Lunch, Learn & Play was covered in thick mud. The Shoppe Off Broadway thrift shop basement flooded as well. The swiftly moving waters totally destroyed the impressive Courthouse Community Garden which was on the verge of being harvested. The Hudson Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call for help early Monday morning and spent over 8 hours pumping out the buildings. The Town of Salem does not have flood insurance for the complex, and other means are being sought to fund the necessary restoration. Consequently, the pottery studio will be temporarily closed until the funds are raised to replace the ruined equipment. The teamwork of the volunteers who have been at the Courthouse daily to assist with the cleaning has been inspiring. Donations, both monetary and additional volunteer hours to assist with the cleaning process have been solicited. The Shoppe remains open as does the CCC. Executive Director, Donna Farringer, has said we may be a bit battered and bruised, but we are definitely not defeated. Anyone interested in assisting may visit the website at www.salemcourthouse.org to obtain details.

THE GEORGIS FINAL CONCERT OF THE SEASON HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SUNDAY, SEPT. 11! RAIN or SHINE (for real, this time) The rains of Irene totally upstaged the August 28th concert and weve rescheduled the Hill Hollow Band to play at 4 pm on September 11th. Please come in your dancin shoes! Come out to the Georgi in Shushan to hear the liveliest band this side of San Francisco, and at the same time do your part to help a local non-profit museum survive the weather. Supporting local live music, and the venues that provide it, was never more important! This band, eight incredibly talented musicians will delight every bone in your dancin body! HILL HOLLOW consists of Marty Satalino on fiddle and mandolin, Terry Lamphere on bass, Jeff Dooley on banjo, dobro, and accordion, Wayne Lane on rhythm guitar, Chris Lane on acoustic lead guitar, Josh Greenberg on alto sax, Nora Lamphere on vocals and percussion, and Barry Hyman on pedal steel. They play bluegrass and acoustic rock, have been playing together for decades and have achieved that perfect combination of really tight and delightfully loose at the same time. Theyre full of energy and great fun to watch, listen and dance to. The final LARAC sponsored concert for the season begins at 4 pm; if nice out, on the lawn if rainy, in the Museum. Tickets are $5 each or $10 per family. Please call 518-854-3773 for more information

WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN! We The People.. are the backbone, skeleton, flesh and blood of this great country. Our government is simply a tool that allows us to achieve our goals in a civilized and organized manner. September 11, 2001 proved to us and the world that when the chips are down it is individuals who make a difference. To us, hero is a term more appropriately attributed to the actions of Todd Beamer, Thomas E Burnett, Jr, Jeremy Glick and Mark Bingham, the people who took it upon themselves to take down United Flight #93, fully aware of the consequences. But, they did it, and in so doing, saved countless lives. Individuals like these men are the ones who have built this country and made it great. They didnt wait for any directive from a government agency. They didnt beg for help or anguish over what they knew they had to do. They simply did it, and in doing so the terrorists were denied. So, never forget! It is during times like these that many of us feel that our contributions are inadequate or not important. But, every effort we make on our own behalf or on behalf of others solidifies the foundation upon which our system of government sits. It is not the politicians, nor the media pundits, nor the bureaucracies that make this country great. No.. its we, the people. Celebrate our freedoms, and be vigilant so that we dont lose them.

* I just wanted to say how Tina North has made buying a vehicle a pleasurable experience. I have purchased three cars from Tina and everytime the sale went smooth. Circle is the only place I will go to buy a Quality car. Thanks Tina Sincerely Eric Johnson Greenwich NY
