This year marks the 35th anniversary of Hang Around Victor Day. Since 1976, the event has showcased service organizations, schools, churches, merchants and everything special about Victor, New York. Besides showcasing the towns amenities, at the heart of Victor Day is a sense of community. For me the festival is about seeing old friends and creating goodwill in the community, says Susan Stehling, former Victor Chamber President and long-time organizer of Hang Around Victor Day. That this event has gone on for so many years is a good commentary on the Victor community. The festival got its start as part of the towns Centennial Celebration in 1976. After a successful event, the Victor Chamber of Commerce decided to take over and turn the town celebration into an annual festival to support awareness of the local merchants and services. This year, 100% of the Main Street merchants are involved in Hang Around Victor Day. Hang Around Victor Day first took place on Main Street and the old Town Hall parking lot. As the town of Victor grew, so did the festival. Mead Square Park soon became another festival area. The festival now stretches along Main Street from Maple Avenue to Church Street with areas behind Village Hall, Mead Square Park and the parking lot surrounding the park. Last year, the festival added a special area just for kids in the Village Hall parking lot section of the festival. Past Victor Day Festivities Hang Around Victor Day has evolved over the last 35 years and included
many interesting and diverse activities. The 2000 event included a Millenial Celebration Street Dance and fireworks. In 2007, the Town Hall time capsule was opened exposing artifacts buried in 1900 and 1936. The Battle of the Bands held in 2009 included a text message voting system that received 3,000 votes. Other featured activities have included a Farmers Market, parades down Maple Avenue, Victor souvenirs and an Oktoberfest. About the Event Host The Victor Chamber of Commerce is a membership-driven business organization that promotes connections between businesses, provides resources for businesses to grow and addresses merchant concerns by advocating positive change. Their close working relationship with the town and village allows them to work together toward goals in economic development and promotion of Victor as a historical tourism destination. Victor Chamber of Commerce Programs Monthly after-hours networking events Monthly educational seminars. Recent topics: energy-saving, customer service and on-the-job training programs. The Chamber connects businesses to Ontario County Programs such as Finger Lakes Workforce, which provides human resources advice. The Chamber recently made introductions between the Ganondagan building committee and NYS Assemblyman Sean T. Hanna, which will help them move forward with a building project.
