ut when you get music and words together, that can be a very powerful

Theres no denying it. Music is that feel good necessity; an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its the best celebrated art. It can make the mind travel down the road of precious memories. It can create laughs, conjure up new dance moves, and encourage old ones (i.e. the electric slide at weddings). Its the magical thing in this world that can bring people together from all walks of life. From doing the twist to teaching people how to dougie, we have participated in the evolvement of a lifetime. Music is the celebration of art at its finest, so why not indulge in it? This issue we highlight up and coming artists and DJs as they pave their way into one of the hardest industries of all time. We shed light on the legendary icons that have made their marks on musical genres, from tejano music, to reggae, to rock n roll. We also celebrate the idea of giving back to the community. This past June, Dollhouse hosted a fashion show and charity event, in which half of the proceeds earned were donated to the Transitional Housing Corporation, a DC nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of the homeless. I was very fortunate to work with THC staff, all of the models, my interns, photographers, and Chris Barz and Bridge Harrison. We made it happen! Many industry professionals were in attendance, from Jaicee Events to LaToya Brim of Vanity Vintage Styling Co.mpany Needless to say, we had a packed house, and were all about celebration this issue. Enjoy this teaser! This is our first ever double cover issue! With Love and then some,

scratching Im still working on it so just know that I am working on it though lol, DHM: Whos your favorite artist of all time? Beyonce hands down. This girl can dance sing act and everything. She does such an awesome job with her shows. Her music is great and some id uplifting for women and shes just great. The only time I got mad at her was when she played in the movie with Idris Elba omg that guy is sexy I was a little jealous but I was like its all good though lol. DHM: If you werent doing this, what would you be doing? I would get into dance as a choreographer or producing. I love dance ever since my parents put me in dance school I just fell in love with it. And the producing I love that as well. I just wanna do anything with music and those are the things I would do. DHM: You grew up in the 90s. What was your favorite kids show? Omg I love Bobbys World, The Animaniacs, Looney Tunes (omg I could watch that all day) I love watching Kenan & Kel, All That, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Cosby Show, Hey Arnold; I could go on forever lol. DHM: You are stuck on a desert island, and can have only three albums. What would they be? Thats pretty hard but I would have to pick Jay-Z The Black Album, Beyonce B-Day, and Usher Confessions (the best album ever)

DHM: Do you keep up with your competition? Not really. I know there are some DJs that are better than me and some that may be bad but I just make sure that Im good and I keep the party rocking and if people rock with me then Im happy. I just have fun with it because I love it. DHM: Whats a normal weekend like for you? Usually Im either home going through my music files, practicing, or out in the clubs showing love to my fellow DJs, or having my godson with me. DHM: What kind of advice would you give to any upcoming DJ out there? Practice! Practice! Practice! Its the only way youll get better. And when someone gives you advice just sit and listen. Dont always say you know everything because you really dont. I mean you can have you input but always listen to what someone is trying to tell because it might help you right then and there or maybe later in your life. And always stay humble and never burn your bridges because it may wind up hurting you one day. Also never let your personal feelings get involved in business. It always causes drama. Keep business as business. DHM: Do you have any hidden talents? I dont think so lol DHM: Describe your swag in three words. Hmm I cant even think of 3 words maybe next time if I have a interview

because I dont know if they have heard this song yet or if they will like it or not so Im taking chances hoping they will like it and not flip out lol. But Im also thingking about the timing to because I dont want to play the major hot songs early I like to save the best for last. DHM: Youve met a lot of famous people. Have you ever freaked or fainted in front of a celebrity? Naw. I might have been excited to see an artist but I dont flip out. Half the time I dont pay them any mind. I just be chillin. DHM: What are some of the major projects you are working on now? I dont have any big projects going on right now, but to me my big project is practicing to get better in my craft thats about it . DHM: Where do you see yourself in one year? Five years? One year still deejaying and doing more parties and events. In 5 years hopefully traveling around deejaying and opening up my dance school that Ive always wanted and music studio.

later in life Ill definitely have 3 words maybe. DHM: Do you have a guilty pleasure? Coldstones Ice Cream or Ritas. If I could go there every day I would lol DHM: Describe your performance stance. What do you think about

when youre deejaying? As far as my performance I make sure I play all the hits. Thats a must. Especially some of the wold school hits. Im always thinking about what to play next and how Im gonna bring in the song where to play it which part of the song I will play but I dont over think where as though Ill mess up. DHM: What advice would you give someone trying to make it into the music industry? TT: My best advice would be to stay true to who you are. Dont ever allow anyone to make you fit into a formula. Be who you aresinger, artist, producer, musicianand people will definitely see your heart and respect your artistry for years to come. DHM: What projects are you working on right now? TT: I am working hard (through my partnership with BLCABlack Leadership Commission on AIDS) to bring awareness to my immediate DMV community in hopes to affect a change in the astounding HIV/AIDS stats. Interview
Words by Leigh Johnson
DHM: Where did you grow up? TT: New Orleans, LA. DHM: How long have you been singing? TT: Since 5 years old. Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston inspired me to study vocal tones, textures and phrasings. Ive been hooked ever since. DHM: Who are some of your musical muses? TT: Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Tweet, Brandy, Eric Benet, R. Kelly, Babyface, Teddy Riley, Richard Smallwood, and Donald Lawrence. DHM: How do you balance a 9 to 5 job with your schedule and aspirations? TT: It can definitely be a challenge, but I think Im able to get through it by keeping everything in its respective place and lane. DHM: What are some of your guilty pleasures? TT: Martin, The Good Wife, apple

TT: Well, Im actually surrounded by a lot of wise mentors and friends, so the best Ive been given is to stay true to myself. Its okay to have influences, but be YOU. Also, to take care of my instrument (i.e. sing properly and get enough rest). The more you care for your instrument, the longer it will last. DHM: Whos the most awesome person youve ever met? TT: Wow! This is a hard one. I think it would be Fantasia. She came to my job one day, and I was trying to fall back and not be a groupie, but she called me out of the crowd and was like who is the fly guy? She was such a sweetheart. I love down-to-earth people! DHM: Whos on your playlist right now? TT: Kelly Price (Kelly), Richard Smallwood (Promises), and Tre Thomas (A Natural Contrast). DHM: What genre of music cant you stand to listen to? TT: Actually, I listen to all genres. You can always find something to take from any kind of music, whether it be lyrical content/style, chord progressions and/ or vocal style/phrasing. Im a wellrounded student! DHM: Do you play any instruments?

ou can find a DJ just about anywhere today, from Craigslist to the city corner, theres always someone with a passion for spinning. However, in terms of name originality, we take our hat off to DJ Qwerty, part time DJ/Gym trainer from Virginia. When asked how he came up with his name, he says: Five years ago in college. I would do gigs and a friend of mine would always ask, Hey, dude, did you bring the Qwerty? referring to a computer keyboard. And ever since then it kind of stuck.

DJ Qwerty

Interview
Words by Matia Johnson
DHM: When did you first realize your love for music? DJ Qwerty: Its always been a part of my life, but something that really comes to mind is being in 5th w and hearing a DJ mix on the radio for the first time. I was obsessed with how the DJ was manipulating songs that I knew so well into something completely new. After that I started recording all my favorite tracks off the radio on a dinky cassette recorder and playing them back all the time. DHM: What is your greatest strength as a DJ? Weakness? DJ Qwerty: I read crowds really well, because I try to imagine myself in their shoes when Im DJ-ing. I started DJ-ing in college because I got tired of people screwing up music at parties and clubs. So when Im spinning now I really try to put the set in terms of what is going to work best at that moment to keep people entertained and moving. Weakness? I dont have one! Well if I have to pick one I love music so much I try to play everything during my gigs, different genres, artists, etc. I guess thats not really a weakness! DHM: Whos your favorite artist of all time? DJ Qwerty: Tough question! How about favorite DJ first? Armin Van Buuren, worlds #1 DJ, hes a big part of why I got into DJing. Actually, youll hear a lot of DJs around here say that. I got to see him at Club

Glow (a DC event every week, www. clubglow.com) this spring and it was an amazing experience. DHM: If you werent doing this, what would you be doing? DJ Qwerty: Growing up I wanted to be a sports anchor, but I havent given up on that yet! Modeling or acting seems like it would be fun. DHM: You grew up in the 1990s. What was your favorite kids show? DJ Qwerty: Salute Your Shorts, hands down. The episode where they have the huge water balloon fight across the entire camp was just incredible. DHM: You are stuck on a desert island, and can have only three albums. What would they be? DJ Qwerty: Kanye West College Dropout. I listened to this album the whole way through about 30 times the summer it came out. Sigur Ros Takk , awesome ambient- chill out music, and perfect for long drives or a change of pace. Michael Jackson Thriller,-- absolutely changed pop music forever. DHM: Do you keep up with your competition? DJ Qwerty: I do, and there are a lot of DJs here in DC. If I have a weekend off and I go out I like to introduce myself and exchange cards. I personally think all DJs are on the same team, but some cats like to look at it like a contest. DHM: Do you have any hidden talents?

DJ Qwerty: Hmm...I can hold my breath underwater for a really long time DHM: What do you think about when youre deejaying? DJ Qwerty: Im always scanning the crowd and I love interacting with them while the set is going on, people REALLY get a kick out of that, so I try to be really accessible when Im playing, especially if people are having a good time. During a set my mind is on what I want to play next and how to manage the energy level of the crowd, like if I need to pump it up some more or bring it down for a song or two. DHM: Where do you see yourself in one year? Five years? DJ Qwerty: In one year I hope to have established residencies at the hottest clubs and venues in DC and in 5 years I want to be doing this full time worldwide. Thanks Dollhouse!

Love, Lust, & the In-Between / Dollhouse

Step 1. Be Honest. As mentioned before, a lot of the people who get caught up on Facebook were engaging in devious acts to begin with. Honesty is crucial to any relationship with or without social networking. So even if youve never had a Facebook, Twitter, or Myspace page, honesty is always the best policy.

When you go to someones wall with the intentions of catching them in the act, you almost always find something.

38 / DHM September - October 2011

www.dollhousemagazine.com

hile websites such as Match. com and eHarmony boast about bringing together thousands of couples, no one is quite sure of the number of relationships that have ended because of social networking sites such as Facebook. The masses seem to agree with pages such as Facebook. Ruining Relationships Since 2004, F A C E B O O K A Relationships Worst Enemy, and I Wonder How Many Relationships Facebook Ruins a Year? Congratulations, people cant seem to juggle both their relationships and social media pages but show no signs of getting rid of either one. So what is it about Facebook that makes it the equivalent of a medieval guillotine for relationships? Could it be the wall to wall feature which allows people to view entire conversations held on their friends walls? Or could it be the mini-feed thats to blame?

Love in the Time of Facebook

By Terri McCray
The truth of the matter is that Facebook, or no other social media site, is not to blame for the multiple relationships that have ended since its creation, we are. For the most those who blame FB for getting caught were out doing things that they had no business doing in the first place. Whether its through Facebook or some other medium, eventually, whatever deceitful acts you were engaged in will come to the surface. Sometimes with these social networks we have the tendency to go digging for dirt, and when youre looking for something incriminating, nine times out of ten, youll find it. When you go to someones wall with the intentions of catching them in the act, you almost always find something. Seek, and you shall find. There are a few that have mastered the art of having a Facebook page while having a loving, healthy relationship, but how, you might ask? Allow me to present you with three patented ways to feed your need to update your friends, associates and probably a few people youve never met before on your daily activities while keeping your significant other happy. Step 2. Be Secure. People tend to get a little insecure about their perfectly happy relationship when the internet gets involved. This is understandable. Something that may seem minor suddenly can seem like the biggest deal in the world when 500 of your friends are tuning in to see. A word of advice, dont go looking for trouble and dont blow things out of proportion. Step 3. Be Quiet! A little discretion goes a long way and perhaps the world doesnt need to know about your boyfriends hairy feet or your girlfriends morning breath. For the sake of your relationship (or even just your own privacy) resist the urge to document your every thought on the internet! More than a few of us have fallen victim to Facebook stalkers; people who watch your page more than you. Why give them something to look at or something they can use against you? Leave something to the imagination, not everyone needs to know everything.

Male
Sex Columnist:
What a Man wants.or at least this one anyway!
www.dollhousemagazine.com

adies, ever wonder what a well-to-do man really wants in bed? I mean, really, really wants? Well, ladies, all that brain twisting can stop here. Dollhouse Magazine Contributing Writer, Donisha Adams, caught up with one very edgy and eligible bachelor on the streets of MD who openly laid his sexual preferences out on the table. Only one of many, he speaks volumes loud enough for ladies to take notes, no cut-cards allowed.

DHM: How many times would you have sex in a day if you could?

Interview
Words by Donisha Adams

ST: Well, it would all depend on how much of a sexual mood I was in, but I would like to have the opportunity to see how many times in one day I would or could go until I was 100% satisfied. But on an average day, 3 to 5 rounds are fine, though some days, I would want to sit it out and give my self the chance to miss it for a little bit.
DHM: Do men care about foreplay? Why or why not? ST: Depends on the man, his mood, the occasion, his feelings for the girl, where they are, how much time they have, and so on. While some men can commit to up to an hour of foreplay, there are those who could care less about it and would rather cut straight to the chase. There are guys just as well as there are girls who really delight in pleasing their partners, and get just as turned on at their partners arousal as they would their own. Women however, tend to be a little more interested in foreplay and doing little things to get everything nice, flowing and in the mood. Men are mostly aroused by their visual senses, (thats why strip clubs and porn do so much for us), whereas women are more interested in the rest of the bodys four senses. DHM: Do you care about pleasing the woman? Overall, do you think a lot of men feel this way? Why or why not? ST: Is that a trick question? Pleasing the woman is essential to a healthy sex life. It makes her more interested in next times and in returning the favor or pleasure. But it still goes back to the individual and their relationship. He might be interested in pleasing one girl and be a bit more self-centered in relations to another partner. DHM: Are you adventurous in bed? Would you use props like handcuffs and ropes? ST: Yes, all that is fine! DHM: Do you like to be the dominant one in the bedroom? Why or why not? ST: I like to start off in control and then let her take the wheel and test her skills. If shes worthy, she can apply for any position she wants. Whether shes hired or fired as head boss all depends on her performance of course.
www.dollhousemagazine.com

~This column was altered to respect the privacy of the individual. ~ST from Maryland gives us the deets. DHM: What is your favorite sex position and why? ST: On top from the back. I like a woman laying on her front in a position where I have a lot of cushioning and softness when I come down, either rough or slow. Its a perfect position if she is worn out or just lazy... good for turning up the heat too, or ending a round; she cant run if the bed is in the way! DHM: What is one thing you would NEVER try during sex? Why or why not? ST: No penetration or licking from the behind whatsoever. If you are woman into that kind of stuff, you should get help, (laughs) and check your chromosomes if you know what I mean. DHM: How can people improve their sex lives? ST: Do your research, build on what you learn and use your imagination. Compete, role play, tape record, and use music to assists in the type of sex youre going for, whether its fun, romantic, wild, or just stress relief. But as you might infer from my previous answer, I say know your limitations on experimentation. DHM: What is one misconception that women may have about men and their sexual needs? ST: All men are the same, or pleased by the same things. Just like a man should with his woman, a woman should learn her man and what he personally likes. In reality, stereotypes have their reasons for existing, but never make them absolute; there are exceptions to every rule!
