HANSON PACKED PRODUCTS Health and Safety Data Sheet

Silica Sands
1. Description Silica Sand is an odourless, lime free, buff coloured washed sand. This data sheet applies to the following products: Playpit Sand Silver Sand Horticultural Silver Sand Kiln Dried Sand 2. Supplier/Manufacturer Hanson Building Products Clifton House Butlers Leap Rugby CV21 3RQ Telephone: 08706 097095 Facsimile: 01788 513590 3. Composition/Information on Ingredients Predominantly silica with traces of many oxides such as alumina, potassium, sodium, chromium, titanium. Silica sand is used as a raw material for glass making and has many specialised industrial uses such as sand foundering, ceramic manufacture, as well as horticultural and play areas. 3.1 Silica sand is subject to a recognised exposure limit. (see Exposure Controls, Section 9) 3.2 There is currently no requirement under CHIP to label this product. 3.3 Risk phrases appropriate to dust hazard - CAN BE HARMFUL BY INHALATION. POSSIBILITY OF SERIOUS DAMAGE TO HEALTH BY PROLONGED EXPOSURE THROUGH INHALATION. 4. Hazard Identification Main Hazards. Not classified as hazardous unless dust is generated and released into the air. The dust will contain some respirable free crystalline silica that may be inhaled and remain lodged in the alveoli areas of the lungs. The long term effect of prolonged exposure can be silicosis. Eye Contact. Dust will cause irritation and discomfort by abrasion, as with grit in eye. Skin Contact. Prolonged or repeated contact may cause dryness and abrade the skin. 5. First Aid Measures Eye Contact. Immediately irrigate with plenty of clean water to clear particles from the eye. Obtain medical assistance if discomfort persists. Skin Contact. Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Ingestion. Rinse out any particles from the mouth, give patient water to drink. Inhalation. Remove to fresh air. 6. Fire Fighting Measures The product itself does not present a combustion risk. Extinguisher Type: General purpose for any packaging or pallets used for storage. 7. Accidental Release Measures Personal Precautions. Wear respiratory protection where dust occurs (see Section 9). Environmental Precautions. There are no known environmental hazards, other than any significant release screening out light or air from plants or wild life. Methods for Cleaning. If practicable, spillages should be cleaned up using a vacuum system fitted with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filter. Minimise generation of airborne dust by damping down. DO NOT DRY SWEEP. 8. Handling and Storage Handling. Where possible use appropriate engineering controls and work practices to minimise dust generation. Where dust occurs use suitable respiratory protection. When handling bagged material, due regard should be paid to the risks outlined in the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Storage. Bulk dried product should be stored in silos and kept dry. Bagged product should be stored in a safe and stable manner in a dry place, away from heat that may damage packaging. Shelf Life. The shelf life of the product is unlimited if stored under the correct conditions. 9. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection The EH40/98 Maximum Exposure Limit (MEL) for respirable crystalline silica 0.3mgm-3 (8 hour time weighted average TWA). Free silica containing respirable dusts, should also meet the 4mgm-3 Occupational Exposure Standard (OES) and 10mgm-3 for total inhalable dust. Engineering Measures - Dust control. Where reasonably practicable, dust exposures should be 15. Transport Information

controlled by engineering methods or local exhaust ventilation (LEV). Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Respiratory Protection - Where dust occurs, a suitable respirator should be worn. Hand Protection - Gloves are recommended for workers who suffer from sensitive skin or dermatitis. Skin Protection - Overalls and safety footwear recommended. Eye Protection - Safety glasses or goggles are recommended in windy conditions or when the product is likely to enter the eye. 10. Physical and Chemical Properties Appearance: Buff coloured grains. Odour: Odourless. pH: Neutral Boiling point/range: 22300C Melting point/range: 16100C Flash point (C): Not applicable (not flammable) Flammability (gas/solid): Not applicable (not flammable) Autoflammability: Not applicable Explosive properties: Not applicable (not explosive) Oxidising properties: Not applicable Vapour pressure: Not applicable Relative density: 2.65 Solubility: Negligible in water. 11. Stability and Reactivity The product is stable under normal conditions. 12. Toxicological Information Chronic effects (respirable crystalline silica) Long term exposure to respirable free crystalline silica can lead to the development of Silicosis. This involves changes to the innermost parts of the lungs and can lead to breathing difficulties and in some cases may be fatal. 13. Ecological Information Possible effects: There is no known evidence that this product is harmful to the environment. Behaviour: Sand is subject to mobility in windy conditions, causing accumulative build-up. Environmental fate: Resistant to biodegradation. 14. Disposal Considerations Dispose of in accordance with local regulations to approved landfill sites. Any introduction of substances or contaminants are outside the control of the vendor and must be disposed of appropriately.

No special labelling or transport classification identified. 16. Regulatory Information Not classified for labelling information. Recommended Risk phrase 20: Harmful by inhalation. Recommended Safety phrase 22: Do not breathe dust. 17. Legislation and Other Information Training advice: People handling the product should be informed of the presence of crystalline silica and trained in its proper use and handling. Use restrictions: Silica sand should NOT be used for dry sand blasting. Further information: CAS No. 14808-60-7 Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
