"Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done" is more than a part of Christ's instruction teaching us how to pray. It is God's singular agenda to which He is still committed. It should likewise be ours. T. Allen Robburts +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+
SHOULDER TO SHOULDER #586 ---- 3/2/09 Title: "Biblical Revival -- Part Two (Evidences There Is The Need -- 3)

Dear Friend and Pilgrim Partner: I greet you today from a southwestern Missouri blanketed with the remnants of a six-inch plus covering of fresh snow. After lows in the teens at night, the temperature is rising quickly and the sun is chasing the snow away quickly. Birds are everywhere around the house . . . hundreds of them . . . attracted by the nineteen bird feeders I have circumventing the house. Our lives are abundantly enriched by living in this quiet and serene place provided by the Lord, and it is an ideal place for me to try putting my thoughts together in ways that I hope will build you up and encourage you as you serve The Master. Later today Jo Ann and I will board a plane enroute to Arizona for several days of combined ministry and family time. So, next week, Lord willing, I'll write to you from one of my favorite southwestern cities, Tucson. Jo Ann was born and raised in Tucson, and I graduated from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. We met when Dad became the first pastor of the Twenty-Second Street Church in Tucson back in 1957. We will be spending time in the Prescott area, Phoenix, and Tucson during our twelve-day trek. Jo Ann has two sisters and a brother in Tucson, and I have cousins in Prescott, Phoenix, and Gilbert. We'll have an opportunity to give a big "thank you" to one of our supporting churches, share a report on the work we did in Kyiv, and introduce the vision we have for this new chapter in our ministry. We will also reconnect with a member of our very first mission team we ever led in 1996 to Croatia, and link up again with several friends we've not seen for a very long time. Arizona is an incredibly beautiful state, and we hope to also enjoy some of the sights and sounds.

THIS 'N' THAT: + Brian Rushfeldt, Executive Director of Canada Family Action Council, recently warned that America is headed directly toward Socialism where the government becomes "The Provider" for the people, and that the recent Obama "Stimulus" package will fail, with Americans falling into poverty. He says that the approach is already killing the American work ethic which was a hallmark of American success in the past. He also reflects on some of Canada's similar actions and the negative results. The article can be read at http://www.onenewsnow.com/Politics/Default.aspx?id=426240. + Concerning "D": My good friend, "M" responded this past Friday to my comments about "D" and his rejecting Christianity. I thought "M"'s comments might be helpful to our understanding. Here's what he said ---- Regarding "D", I definitely agree with what you had commented. Many people don't understand what does it really mean to stand before a judge who doesn't understand what justice mean. The way the judge has asked "D" all the questions is not the way judges behave in America. Unfortunately some of the American confuse the Muslim way of the court with the American one.

When the court session starts for an apostate, the judge(an angry Mullah) starts with a similar phrase addressing the apostate: "Tell me that you have converted to Christianity and I order your death right now!". There's no lawyer, no case, nothing! In such a situation, those who blame "D" has to put themselves in his shoes!!! + A hopefully "final" comment on the institutionalization of the Church: Dr. Lewis Drummond, former President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, Billy Graham Professor or Evangelism and Church Growth at Samford University, and major authority on revival and spiritual awakening, was a longtime friend. During the mid 1980's it was my privilege to have him as a guest speaker in a leadership training workshop we were having in our church in Wisconsin. He introduced me to the "Organizational Life Cycle Bell Curve" idea of how any organization develops and changes from birth to death. Perhaps one of the pitfalls of trying to motivate people with vision rather than with lifestyle is that the farther away you get from the vision the first generation had, the more the vision wanes, and the more human and organizational attempts are used to try to keep things going. Very seldom does the third generation follow through with the first generation vision.

Frankly, it is inevitable that any organization will go through periods of stagnation and decline, . . and even death. If a church, at least somewhere in the "peak/plateau/nostalgia/loss" periods, does not retrace its steps back to its original vision and calling, the ultimate end is spiritual death, and eventually a disappearance into insignificance and distant memories. The sketch on the right gives a simplified version of the cycle. If you take time to study them both, you will soon be able to determine whether or not your church is an institutionalized church caught in structure, or if it is a living and vibrant organism that lives because of Jesus and not because of history, tradition, methods, or external stimuli.

I met Max Thompson perhaps eight or ten years ago in his hometown of Bolivar, MO. Max isn't a pastor or evangelist . . . he's an outdoorsman, artist, and an environmental biologist. More importantly, he is a common man upon whom God has placed an enormous burden for revival in "the church within the Church". He clearly discerns between the church as a cumbersome organization and a living organism. Several years ago he wrote a booklet entitled, "Then Will I: An Ancient Promise to an Apostate People". Interestingly, after years of it lying in one of my many "To-Sort-Soon!" box, I just happened to run across it yesterday while continuing my sorting, disposing, filing project. His booklet has been incorporated into the resources that can be found at www.henryblackaby.com, the website of internationally recognized Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God and other spiritual growth, revival, and evangelism resources.

In the preface Max writes, "An ancient promise to His church in every generation, II Chronicles 7:14 is God's trumpet blast in an evil day. Perhaps no verse is quoted more when His people discuss the issue of prayer in desperate times. Perhaps no scripture speaks so clearly to the covenant relationship between Father God and His possession. . . 'If my people...then will I'. Yet, precious promises go unappropriated because we don't position our lives before Him as we ought. "One doesn't have to look very far on the American landscape to observe the prayerless, unrepentant condition of the saints. Consequences of our unfaithfulness are evident in every fabric of our society. As I write this, Hell has launched a tremendous assault on America. Media brush-strokes continue to paint a portrait of a rotting nation . . . moral chaos, uncertain economy, leadership crisis. The hedge is down! "The church of the living God is the only institution on the planet that can halt this decay. Yet, heavenly resources to change our wicked course are not apportioned to us because we don't humble ourselves, seek His face, and pray. Our alters are empty and dry while precious eternal promises go uncollected. Church, have we become the problem, rather than the solution? "Where are the prophets who will exhort us to pray?! Will the bride not call on the groom to forgive and heal? Have we become so spiritually drained by religious things that we no longer see that we are to be a house of prayer for all nations?"

A THIRD FACTOR: In the last letter, I indicated that there were five clear evidences that the Church was in need of great revival. We addressed the first two ---- 1) theological evidences (that is, the Bible indicates a need for periods of great refreshing, renewing, and re-energizing of His people as recorded throughout the Bible, particularly the Old Testament), and 2) historical evidences as you consider the track record of the Church in its many shapes and forms. We continue this segment of our study on revival by briefly looking at a third distinct evidence that indicate the need for a great move of God among His redeemed people. It is, . . . + Societal Evidences: Whether you examine ancient history, Old Testament history, New Testament, Medieval history, or modern history, you will always come up with the same thing. As far as I can tell, there are no exceptions to this fact . . . that when the Church is moving and working in the power of the Holy Spirit, experiencing the holiness, righteousness, compassion, and evangelistic zeal Christ intended to be the norm, societies were changed. The reason is simple . . . Jesus made it clear that when the Church is truly being "salt" and "light", things change. It is the process of the kingdom of darkness being overpowered by the Kingdom of God. A dear friend believes that if followers of Jesus Christ are truly following Him and focusing everything on building His kingdom in every sphere of life, revival as we understand it would not be necessary, and the word itself as we define it would not even exist. He has a legitimate point . . . because, as Roy Hession stated in his book, Calvary Road, "Revival is just the life of the Lord Jesus poured into human hearts." Charles Finney described it as, ". . . nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God." G. Campbell Morgan explained it this way; "It is God manifesting Himself through human life, His redeeming power bursting forth in fruits of righteousness and holiness . . ." In other words, if the Church . . . or even individual believers . . . will simply submit again to Jesus Christ and focus attention once again on His Kingdom rather than other kingdoms, the very life of Christ will flow automatically through us, and there will be visible evidence not only in individual lives and the life of the Church, but also in societal circles all around. When the Church experienced revival, whether on a local or territorial scale, the surrounding societal environment was dramatically impacted. I'm sure you're familiar with some of the great revivals of the past that give evidence of that process ---- through a process generally ignited by prolonged prayer and intercession, the Church is awakened to its spiritually dead condition, its bankrupt resources, and the impossibility of the task before it. That brings it to a sense of desperation that causes itself to throw itself upon the mercy of God in repentance and surrender. Such a crucible of brokenness breaks out in a newness of life, just as the grain of wheat falling into the ground and dying, or the alabaster box being broken so the oil can pour forth. It doesn't take long for people to notice it when pretentious Christianity has been replaced by the real thing, and societal awakening begins to spread like a flood of waters being released by a broken dyke onto parched desert land. The Church,

now walking in fullness and power, is able to move with victorious effect and results, favor in the eyes of man open new doors, and every aspect of society is impacted by the manifest presence and power of God. + Many of the social improvements of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries were the direct result of the First and Second Great Awakenings ---- child labor laws, the end of slave trade, the development of major industrial reforms, the criminalization of sweat shops, the development of education, the beginning of the Salvation Army and Alcoholics Anonymous . . . all of these came out of the labor pains of God's people getting right with him and beginning to take His Commission and Kingdom seriously. The great Wesleyan revival in the days of John and Charles Wesley and George Whitfield shook Great Britain to the core, both reviving the dead church but also resulting in amazing social changes such as I just noted. At the same time, God used Jonathan Edwards in the United States, to do the same thing there, beginning in a small rural town of North Hampton, Massachusetts in 1734. Not only was the whole community shaken, but it quickly spread to Connecticut, New York State, New Jersey, and then to Pennsylvania. When the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is serious about following Him, society is impacted in monumental proportions. + In 1825 God used an attorney, Charles Finney, to bring such conviction and repentance that people would come under conviction in their homes and fall prostrate on the floor in brokenness and repentance. Factory workers would suddenly and without explanation break down in such uncontrollable weeping that factories and mills had to close down. People who were making, distributing, and selling liquor were so convicted that they would break the containers and let the alcohol flow into the streets. + This is what happened in 1905 when young Evan Roberts stood before a congregation on a Wednesday night with a "message from God . . . repent of every sin, get right with every person, commit yourself entirely to God". The end result was the great Welsh Revival in which an estimated 95% of the people in one particular city were converted to Christ, every tavern and prostitution house was closed down, policemen began wearing white gloves as a sign that there was no crime in their town, they had nothing to do other than to control crowds (most of which were at churches), so they formed into quartets and began singing in church services, and so many Welsh miners were saved that production was slowed down as a result of the mules pulling the underground coal carts no longer understood the commands of the redeemed miners. As had the Wesleyan Revival, the Welsh Revival jumped the Atlantic and impact many parts of the United States including New York, Chicago, and even as far west as San Francisco and Portland. + A similar report is connected to the great Hebrides Revival of 1949 under the preaching of Scotsman Duncan Campbell. The entire population on several of the islands were all converted to Christ, and all gambling, drinking, and sexual immorality simply ceased. The great Shantung Revival of China followed several years of missionaries crying out to God in repentance. Then in 1932 a great regional revival swept across the land, lasting sixteen years until 1948. In spite of the suppression of Communism since that day, the Church in China has thrived and literally millions have come to Christ. On February 3rd, 1970, in the small Kentucky town of Wilmore, a typical chapel service at Asbury College turned into a 180-hour continuous service of repentance and intercession that so transformed the lives of students and faculty alike, that it spread like wildfire to campuses all across the United States in a matter of days . . . Wheaton College in Illinois, Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, Spring Arbor College in Michigan, Houghton College in New York, Azusa Pacific College in California, Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, Greenville College in Illinois, Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago, Fort Wayne Bible College in Indiana, Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth . . . On and on it swept, not only impacting universities, but denominational offices, publishing houses, radio networks, and more. + While going through boxes of papers recently, I found newspaper articles relating to the most profound revival experience Jo Ann and I ever personally had. Though space simply won't allow details, I was reminded of dozens of marriages restored, law suits settled, prisoners in jail coming to Christ, and the local newspaper headlines proclaiming "Christ Lives!". Apart from our salvation experiences as children, no time in our lives has been more important to us individually, as a family, and in our ministry. Perhaps at another time I can write about it. However, there is no doubt that this move of God changed the societal fabric of not only a congregation, but many congregations, the entire town, and the region around it. The ripples of that three-year-long expression of God's mercy continue to spread around the globe as those who were swept up in those waters continue living out and sharing the reality of a living Christ in practical ways. On the Other hand, . . . ! At the same time, history shows that when the Church was derelict in its character and conduct, sin intensified, and society became more despicably corrupt and suffered the consequences. You need not go far in the United States to see such evidence. A case in point ---- Attorney Robert Whitehead, founder and president of The Rutherford Institute, believes that "God" has become "THE four-letter word" in schools, and that the elite segments of society in educational, entertainment, and governmental institutions have led America to a societal climate toward religion that is very much like in the former Soviet Union and in China today. You'll find the disturbing article in last Wednesday's OneNewsNow.com letter, along with his video commentary, at http://www.onenewsnow.com/Education/Default.aspx?id=426254.

+ Arnold J. Toynbee is one of the world's greatest historians and analysts of history. Born in London, Arnold J. was educated at Winchester College and Balliol College, Oxford. He held teaching positions at Balliol College, King's College London (as Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History), the London School of Economics and the Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) in Chatham House. He was Director of Studies at the RIIA between 1925 and 1955. He worked for the Political Intelligence Department of the British Foreign Office during World War I and served as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. He was co-editor of the RIIA's annual Survey of International Affairs. In 1936 Toynbee was received in the Reichskanzlei by Adolf Hitler and during World War II he again worked for the Foreign Office and attended the postwar peace talks. He is perhaps best known for his evaluation of what led to the decline and collapse of civilizations, of which he closely studied and scrutinized many. Unlike other historians, however, he identified civilizations according to cultural or religious (therefore, moral) criteria rather than national, political, economic, or ethnic features, such as Oswald Spengler did in his The Decline of the West. Toynbee believed that a civilization might or might not continue to prosper, depending on the challenges it faced and how it responded to those challenges to its culture and its religion/s. Such challenges and responses could be physical, political, or socio-religious. His insight into human nature as expressed in history was uncanny and frighteningly accurate. Thus, Toynbee's summarized assessment was that, of 21 great powers, 19 fell from within as a result of internal decay expressed through . . . > Political unrest and upheaval > A rising economy > Rebellious Youth > Breakdown of home life > Loosening of moral standards > High regard of and desire for sports + This rings similarly true to Edward Gibbon's conclusions concerning the Roman Empire as described in The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and Gibbon's Rome, in which, blaming the decline on the loss of civil virtue among the people, he identified the following factors leading to Rome's slow and agonizing collapse: > The breakdown of the family and the rapid increase of divorce. > The spiraling rise of taxes and extravagant spending. > The mounting craze for pleasure and the brutalization of sports. > The expanding production of armaments to fight ever-increasing threats of enemy attacks, while the real enemy was internal decay. > The decay of religion into a multitude of confusing forms, leaving the people without a uniform guide of morality and worship. > The increase of pornography, sexual promiscuity, and drug use. > The expansion of "trade unions" and "guilds", often leading to increased prices and deteriorating product/service quality. Gibbon said, "The decline of Rome was the natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness. Prosperity ripened the principle of decay; the causes of destruction multiplied with the extent of conquest; and as soon as time or accident had removed the artificial supports, the stupendous fabric yielded to the pressure of its own weight," Unfortunately, Gibbon missed the mark when he also said that Christianity, with its message of love, compassion, and peace, because it created conflict within between Romans and Christians until Constantine ended the persecution of Christians, and it helped weaken Rome's willingness to militarily defend itself or conquer either internal or external enemies. One does not have to be the proverbial rocket scientist to see the frightening similarities between the conditions in our world today and those that both Toynbee and Gibbon identified. + The great leader of India, Mahatma Ghandi (1869 - 1948), was one of the world's greatest moralists and idealists in terms of human nature and social conduct. A devout practicing Hindu, he believed strongly in truth, non-violence, social justice, and faith. Among other things, he is known for his "Seven Deadly Social Sins", which are . . . > To gain wealth without work, > To enjoy pleasure without conscience, > To have knowledge (gain an education) without character, > To have commerce without morality, > To practice science without humanity, > To worship without making sacrifice, > To have politics without principle.

Again, we see a glaring image in Ghandi's mirror of introspection of the current socio-political condition in much of the world today . . . people who became wealthy without working for it, a hedonistic form of pleasure focusing on sensuality and extremism, education that begins with gaining knowledge rather than character qualities, immoral and unethical business practices, science that doesn't take human life and its protection into consideration, worship that is self-satisfying and costs little, and politics that is as unprincipled as it has ever been in American history. One truly has to have his head stuck in the sand to not see the suicidal downward spiral that has suddenly reached break-neck speed over the past few months. In my opinion, we have reached a point of inevitability that fulfills Biblical prophecy to the letter. The need for a great revival in the Church is imperative . . . not to save society, but to see souls saved and brought into the Kingdom. + Roger Babson, a well known financial analyst and writer of the mid 20th century said in an article, The test of a nation is the growth of its people, intellectually and spiritually! Money and so-called prosperity are of very little account! Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, Spain and France, all had their turns in being the richest in the world. And the very fact they had a turn is significant, because it was just their turn at being great, . . . and then they declined." Babson continued, "Instead of saving them, their so-called prosperity proved to be the ruin of them. Our nation is now the richest, but it could easily become a second-class nation and head downward. Money will not save us!" Wow! You would have thought that had been written this past week, instead of some sixty years ago.

FINALLY: This, then, begs the question . . . can things change? Will things change? Clearly as believers, we are somewhat between the "rock" and the "hard place" in that, while we know the Bible clearly predicts time and time again that such conditions will not only exist, but will also increase, we are simultaneously commanded to be "salt" and "light" in a decaying and dying world. God has commanded nobody else to be that in this world except His Chosen people and His Redeemed people . . . Christians and Jews. Well, our problem is really not a problem. We don't have to be fatalistic and say, "Well, it's all going to go to hell in a hand basket anyhow, so why should I care?", while at the same time, feel the burden to try to accomplish something that we know will never happen apart from Jesus Christ. . . peace, righteousness, and justice. True, we know the Bible is clear that things will get worse and worse all the way up to the return of Jesus Christ to reign on earth. We also know that we are commanded to share the Gospel and thereby see society change for the better. But, we've forgotten one thing . . . we're not commanded to change or preserve a society, culture, or a civilization; we're commanded to share the Gospel, cast the net, rescue the lost, and build the kingdom by sharing the life-changing message of the Gospel, both in word and in practical action. Think about it for a minute . . . what is a "civilization"? Isn't it essentially an area, system, or philosophy that permeates the lifestyle of a group of people or a territory? Isn't that essentially what a "kingdom" is? A "civilization" has all the fundamental ingredients of a kingdom . . . people, leadership, territory, a form of governing, a means of prosperity and growth, character qualities, unique features, codes of conduct, . . . A "kingdom" is made of people, it has a king, he is the governing authority, it covers territory, it has possessions and provisions, it demands a standard of character and a code of conduct, . . . And, that brings us back to the fundamental command of the Gospel . . . seek the kingdom, preach the kingdom, build the kingdom, expand the kingdom. And the fact that the Church has, by and large, either missed or ignored that message, is why there is such a great need for God's people to awaken, repent, be revived, and get about the business of kingdom preaching. Yes, . . . the theological, historical, material, and societal evidences are clear. God's people need to be renewed! Perhaps that leaves us, at least for today, with one simple question ---- "Do we even care?" I hope you do.
