As you install updates, refer to the compatibility matrix available at the following URL: http://www.ab.com/support/products/controllogix.html This matrix lists recommended revision levels for combinations of ControlLogix products. Important: Be aware that this matrix is extremely dynamic and is updated very frequently. To ensure that you have the latest revision level information, be certain to check the listed URL for updates to the matrix each time you install a flash update. For your convenience, we include an example of this matrix (partial, not updated) below. Important: You must maintain identical software and firmware revision levels on the controllers. When you upgrade your RSLogix 5000 software, you must always flash the firmware of your system processor, and, for full system functionality, we recommend that you also update your ControlLogix communication modules.
Install an Update
The following diagram illustrates the steps you should follow to install an update. The remainder of this document describes each step and provides references to other publications for more detail. To install an update, you need, at minimum: a 90MHz Pentium processor 32MB RAM Microsoft Windows NT, Service Pack 4 RSLogix 5000 RSLinx or RSLinx Lite ControlFlash (for firmware updates) RSNetWorx (for systems that use ControlNet networking)
Refer to the documentation for each software package for specific requirements. You may also want to gather the following manuals for reference:

Currently, you need to install particular revisions of firmware to operate with particular revisions of software, i.e., the firmware and software revision levels in your ControlLogix system must be compatible, as listed in the compatibility matrix on page 1. To maintain compatible revision levels more easily, we strongly encourage you to develop and maintain a list of the software and firmware revision levels in your system. To create this list initially, you can use the Module Info function in RSLogix 5000 software. See the following section, Determine the Current Revision Levels of Your Devices for information about how to do this. To determine which products you need to update, follow these steps: 1. Determine the current software and firmware revision levels of the devices in your system. 2. Compare the revision levels of the devices in your system with those listed in the compatibility matrix on page 1.
1. Go on line with the controller. 2. From the I/O Configuration folder, select the module whose revision level you want to determine. 3. Right-click on the module to select Properties. 4. Select the Module Info tab to display the catalog number, serial number, and current firmware revision level of the module. 5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each module whose revision level you want to determine. To determine the current firmware revision level of a module that is used in the system but is not in the I/O configuration folder, do the following: 1. In RSLinx release 2.20.107 or later, browse to the module whose revision level you want to determine. If you are using an earlier release of RSLinx software, skip to step 3.
2. Right-click to select Device Properties. The software displays the modules revision information. Skip steps 3 and 4 in this procedure. 3. In ControlLogix Gateway software (1756-GTWY), browse to the module whose revision level you want to determine. 4. Double-click on the module. The software displays the modules revison information in the Product Information dialog box..
You should back up the program files because, once you install the firmware update, you will no longer be able to access these program files. To back up your RSNetWorx configuration file: 1. Open RSNetWorx software. 2. Save the configuration file for the system. To back up your RSLogix 5000 application program: 1. Open RSLogix 5000 software. 2. Go on line to the 1756-family controller.
3. Save the application program. If the software displays a message that reports a difference between the controller file and the file that is stored on your computers hard disk, then you need to upload or download the program file that you want to save, as appropriate.
Use ControlFlash software to install any necessary controller, communication module, and/or I/O firmware updates. For important additional guidelines, refer to the Update the ControlLogix ControlNet Communication Module section on page 7 as you install firmware updates to 1756-CNB and -CNBR communication modules. Important: If you need to update firmware, we recommend that you update the controller firmware first. We suggest that you next install updates to communication modules, then motion, and finally I/O modules, as necessary per the decisions you made in step 1, Determine what to update. Important: You need to be on a computer with RSLinx, ControlFlash, and a communication card installed to attach to a device. 1. Start the ControlFlash software program. 2. Select the catalog number of the device to update. RSLinx opens. 3. Use the RSWho Browse utility to select the device to update. 4. Click OK. 5. The Firmware Revision screen displays the catalog number, serial number, and current revision of the device.
6. Select the firmware revision to install (refer to step 1, Determine what to update, for help in selecting the appropriate revision level). 7. If you are installing a later revision level and that firmware revision is not displayed, verify that you have installed the appropriate revision of ControlFlash on the computer. You should have installed the revision of ControlFlash that you received along with your RSLogix 5000 software or the one that you received from the Technical Support -- PLC/Logix Hardware Group. If you have installed the appropriate revision of ControlFlash and the appropriate firmware revision is not displayed, contact the Technical Support -- PLC/Logix Hardware Group at 440.646.6800. 8. If you are installing an earlier revision level, click Show All to determine if this revision level is installed on the computer. 9. Click Finish to complete installation of the update. Important: Do not break communication with the module that you are updating until the update is completed and you see a message reporting that the installation is complete. If you receive an error message, install the update again. If the module no longer communicates properly, send the device to Technical Repair. For assistance with the flash process, contact the Technical Support -- PLC/Logix Hardware Group at 440.646.6800.
When you upgrade an earlier series 1756-CNB or -CNBR module to a later series, you must modify the module profile under the I/O Configuration tree in RSLogix 5000 software. To do this, you need to delete the child modules in the 1756-CNBR profile and reconfigure them after you modify the 1756-CNBR profile. If you plan to upgrade to series D hardware, you must replace the 1756-CNB/R module (e.g., you cannot install a firmware update to upgrade from series B to series D). To ensure system integrity, all systems should include either series B, revision 2.24 or later, series D, revision 5.21, or later 1756-CNB/ R modules. These modules alone are compliant with the ControlNet International Specification. Therefore, you should install updates to all series A, revision 1.19 and series B, revision 2.10 modules to upgrade to series B, revision 2.24.
If your ControlLogix system includes any series D 1756-CNB/R modules on a ControlNet network, you must use RSNetworx for ControlNet revision 2.22.18 or later to set up the network.
To reload your program files: 1. Download the RSLogix 5000 .ACD file to the controller.
Important: When you open an RSLogix 5000 program that was created with a previous revision of software, RSLogix 5000 displays a message that requires you to convert the project to the latest revision. If the revision of RSLogix 5000 installed on your computer is not compatible with the revision of firmware in the 1756-L1 module, RSLogix 5000 displays a message to notify you of the discrepancy when you attempt to download the program to the controller. If this occurs, you need to install an update to the controller. See page 6 for information about installing a controller firmware update. Important: Once you update RSLogix 5000 software (and the .ACD file), you cannot view this file with an older revision of RSLogix 5000 software. 2. Run RSNetWorx and open the configuration file that you backed up in step 2. RSNetWorx prompts you to convert the RSNetWorx .xc file to the new revision. 3. Convert the file. 4. Select Enable Edits and then go on line. 5. Save the file. You have successfully re-established scheduled connections to the system.
As discussed on page 3, to maintain compatible revision levels more easily, we strongly encourage you to develop and maintain a list of the software and firmware revision levels in your system. Do not forget to update this list as you install updates using this document.
