Interrogative sentences in French

1. Intonation
We raise our voice to ask a question and (?) in the end.
Statement Question
Marie parle français. Marie parle français ?
2. Est-ce que / Est-ce qu’
We add Est-ce que or Est-ce qu’ (before vowels) at the
beginning of the sentence and add question mark (?) in the
end.
Statement Question
Marie parle français. Est-ce que Marie parle français ?
Il va au musée. Est-ce qu’il va au musée ?
3. Inversion of subject
• We can form a question by inverting a pronoun subject (
Je, Tu, Il, Elle, Vous, Nous, Elles, Ils ) and the verb. The
subject is connected to the verb with a hyphen (-)
Statement Question
Marie parle français. Parle-marie français ?
Tu vas à Londres Vas-tu à Londres ?

• When inverting a third person singular subject (Elle, Il)

and a verb, T is inserted between the verb and subject
after inversion if subjects end in vowel. T is connected
with hyphen (-) with verbe and subject.
• T is only inserted when using with Il and Elle.
Statement Question
Il va au musée. Va-t-il au musée ?
Il parle français. Parle-t-il français ?
