Accessing and discovering business data Seamlessly connect external data into your applications using the Business Data Catalog (BDC) to create a foundation for business intelligence search.
ADVANTAGES OF Office SharePoint Server 2007 IN AN ORGANIZATION: 1. Use site templates to collaborate or manage meetings When you create a new Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, you can start by selecting one of several different kinds of site templates for collaborating with other people and managing meetings. The site templates in the Collaboration group are designed to help teams within an organization work on projects and collaborate on documents. For example, by using the Document Workspace site
template, you can work with other people on a document or a set of documents. The site templates in the Meetings group are designed to help teams within an organization manage different kinds of meetings. The templates in this group support everything from basic meetings to decision-focused meetings or even social events. 2. Share documents, contacts, tasks, and calendars You can synchronize your Office SharePoint Server 2007 calendar with Office Outlook 2007. You can enter all-day events and specify more types of repeating, or recurring, events. You can track team projects more effectively with visual day and month views. 3. Brainstorm easily with wiki sites A wiki site enables you to brainstorm ideas, collaborate on a team design, build an encyclopedia of knowledge, or just gather routine information in a format that is easy to create and modify. Your team members can contribute to wikis from their browsers they don't need a word processor or special technical knowledge. 4. Share ideas with blogs A blog, or weblog, consists of frequent short posts that are displayed in order, starting with the most recent post. With Office SharePoint Server 2007, it just takes a few clicks to create a blog, post to a blog, subscribe to updates to a blog, or customize a blog. 5. Receive updates to lists and libraries Lists and libraries use Really Simple Syndication (RSS) technology, so that members of your workgroup can automatically receive updates. RSS is a technology that enables people to receive and view updates or feeds of news, blogs, and other items of interest in a consolidated location. 6. Manage projects You can create a Project Tasks list, which includes a Gantt chart. A Gantt chart is a type of visual overview of project tasks that you can use to monitor the dates and progress of team tasks. 7. Get mobile access to content
You can view portals, team sites, and lists on a mobile device to help you stay current on team projects and tasks when you are travelling. For example, lists appear on phones (or other telecommunications devices that support international standards) in a simplified text format, with a link to scroll through the content of each page. 8. Send e-mail to Office SharePoint Server 2007 You can use an e-mail program to participate in discussions, meetings, and documents on an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site. Just as you send e-mail messages to your team to discuss tasks and projects, you can also send e-mail messages to an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site or to a specific list or library. 9. Manage documents and some types of lists offline You can take your important work with you wherever you go. With Office Outlook 2007, you can work offline on files in a library and items in the following types of lists: calendars, contacts, tasks, and discussions. When you connect back online, you can update your files on the server. List items are updated automatically.
DISADVANTAGES:
1: Search enhancements
Impact of finally being able to search across top-level sites. Thats great. But in addition to seeing results of sites users never knew existed, theyll be able to see only what theyve been granted access to. So theres no frustration in following a hyperlink and being prompted with a login request, and theres no security risk associated with confidential information making it into a search result list.
3: Workflow
Most users admit that a lot of e-mail is generated in their organization to collaborate on documents. The ability to check in and check out a document was great in WSS v2, but users still had to e-mail the finished product to the people who needed to approve it.
4: Gantt View
Even if you dont have Project Server, MOSS 2007 now allows you to create a lightweight project environment, including Gantt chart views for project task lists. Although it doesnt have the full functionality of Project Server, it will do in a pinch.
5: Synched tasks
To add to the list of ways that MOSS 2007 provides project support, users can connect a task list to Outlook 2007. They can also view all their task lists on all SharePoint sites from My Site using the SharePoint Sites Web part.
One of the most consistent and compelling observations I have made is this: documents are one of the most overlooked assets in nearly every organization. Here, the word "documents" is used as a general term for spreadsheets, presentations, letters, memos, maps, images, and so forth. Although it is daunting to think of how to empirically measure the value of these assets within an organization, basic common sense suggests that a great deal of organizational knowledge, power, insight, learning potential, and innovation is contained within them. Yet all too to often, document they management, are and treated even rather end-user casually. training. . I observed how organizations do things, from maintaining security, to database management,

Features
Features windows share point server are following: Easy Access for All Team Members Windows Share Point Services is an easily accessed file server. People can store their documents in a document library by going to the site. The truth of the matter is that most people (including me) have a tendency to store documents in too many places. And
storing

collaboration.
It is a common practice for companies to create file shares that are centrally managed, fault-tolerant, and regularly backed up . The idea is to have people store any important documents relating to their job on one of the shares. Usually, people are also given a folder on a share where they can store more personal documents. Few people fully embrace this practice. One of the main reasons is the loss of personal control. Another is the inability to effectively search, sort, and browse the content
Microsoft has fielded a pair of related products for creating and managing team, corporate, and personal portal Web sites. Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0, the latest release of the company's platform for team collaboration sites, has better features for organizing and storing content than its predecessor. SharePoint Server 2007, which is built on WSS 3.0 and thus inherits all of that product's features, is the latest version of Microsoft's strategic platform for corporate portals (the product was formerly called SharePoint Portal Server). SharePoint Server offers incremental improvements for portals and takes on a variety of new roles, including enterprise content management and business intelligence. These new features could expand SharePoint Server's installed base and offer new opportunities for partners to integrate and customize the product. For an overview of the tools, services, and applications provided by WSS 3.0 and SharePoint Server 2007 and the relationship of the two products, see the sidebar "SharePoint Server 2007 Builds on WSS 3.0".
Corporate Portals.
Although the term is broad, corporate portals are typically Web sites that give workers an entry point to corporate information and applications. For example, a corporate portal could provide access to (or even house) a self-service human resources application that helps employees look for new jobs in the organization and allows managers to add or update job descriptions. Although SharePoint Server 2007 does not introduce sweeping changes to its portal features, several incremental improvements and better administration tools could help customers speed creation of portal sites, better target site content to users, and ease administration of large, complex portals.
Content Management.
Microsoft promotes SharePoint Server 2007 as a platform for enterprise content management. It includes features for document management, which helps companies to organize important documents and make them easier for users to work with and find, and records management, which focuses on the storage, retention, and destruction of corporate records for legal, regulatory, or strategic reasons.
Business Intelligence.
windows Share Point Server adds new tools and applications to support business intelligence, a catchall term for the collection, processing, and analysis of data from a
range of sources to aid business-related decisions. SharePoint Server 2007 allows nontechnical workers to define key performance indicators, which track the status of business metrics against predefined goals; create and manage reports; and create Webbased dashboards that display key performance indicators and related information. In addition, the new Excel Services feature supports server-side spreadsheet publishing and calculation and could help organizations that distribute Excel spreadsheets for reporting or analysis. SharePoint Server's easy-to-use features aim to help companies expand business intelligence to broader audiences and thus improve decision making across organizations. Search. Share Point Server 2007 improves enterprise search capabilities, which enable search of resources on a network, such as intranet sites, file servers, and business applications. The product includes many updates to specific search components that should add up to more relevant search results for users. In addition, SharePoint Server 2007 adds new capabilities for finding information about people and it can more easily index data stored in corporate business applications. lack of comprehensive feature sets is often made up for by low initial cost. In fact, many prospective customers have likely already paid most of the cost for SharePoint Server 2007 since the product's Client Access Licenses
Platform Creates Partner Opportunities Although WSS 3.0 and SharePoint Server 2007 provide many readily usable features and applications, the products also offer many opportunities for partners. A collection of .NET class libraries and Web services provide programmatic access to SharePoint features and services; in addition, the complexity, scope of features, and many technical dependencies make SharePoint a fertile opportunity for integrators. Creating Custom Applications.
The Share Point products can serve as the development platform for a variety of Webbased applications, such as those that provide self-service access to data and functions in back-end business systems. For example, developers could create a Web-based application that allowed workers to update time and attendance information stored in a human resources application. Developers can also create custom SharePoint site templates that address specific business problems, such as managing business proposals. Microsoft itself has produced a variety of downloadable templates that can help companies address specific problems and provide partners with a convenient starting point for more advanced or specialized SharePoint applications. Extending The Platform. Many opportunities exist for partners to extend WSS 3.0 and SharePoint Server 2007. Extensions can range from fairly simple custom Web Parts (Web page components that present information to users in a browser) to much more complex integrations with other systems and applications. Extensions from Microsoft partner Meridio, for instance, will let records managers configure policies that automatically move records from SharePoint repositories to Meridio's repositories, which support a wider variety of storage options. Infrastructure Help, Training. Systems integrators and other partners can help customers plan for and set up physical infrastructure and required software components, and learn and take advantage of WSS 3.0's and SharePoint Server 2007's many features. In addition, upgrading could be complex, particularly for customers with large, customized sites built on SPS 2003. Integrators could find opportunities to help such customers identify and address potential upgrade problems and assist with migration to SharePoint Server 2007.
