Case Project 13-1

The problem appears to be the offices Internet gateway. Determining if all or some of the users are having trouble. If it is all users, then ping the gateway IP. If this does not work check physical connections and lights on the gateway. If everything is normal traceroute will help determine if it is the gateway for if it is beyond that. Having replacement/duplicate link that will auto-rollover will prevent it in the future.

The first thing to check would be traffic monitoring to see if there are issues with excessive traffic or if it is occurring somewhere else. If traffic is not the issue it could be that the server is unable to keep up with the requests. If there is not excessive load it could be on another area of the network, the NIC card, or the Cable going to the NIC. If the server had a raid system it would help with Hard Drive issues.

Case Project 14-1

The main point of failure is the single T3 Connection. The hospital should invest in a secondary T3 along with all the connectivity parts (firewall, etc) Also the if there is one central switch. This could be fixed with the switches being connected in a ring or mesh topology with the appropriate protocols in place.

Case Project 14-2

The main part to duplicate is just the T3 link. Without this the remote clinics cannot connect and the internal computers cannot get to the internet. This is also the most expensive part. If that is not possible some sort of caching server ,that would hold the most used data, at each of the clinics would enable them to somewhat work if the T3 was down. I would ask if the caching server was possible, if several T1 with load balancing would be cheaper (This would allow for failure protection if one T1 failed), if it is not cheaper would a DSL connection would be acceptable for a backup of the T3.

The main things to do are: Find the outages or other disaster effects Notify anybody affected so that they can take action If the damage can spread isolate the affected systems Fix the critical affected systems so that work can resume The IT staff and Head hospital department heads should be involved.
