INTENT
I have lived in cities for all of my life and I have come to see the urban environment as a place of deep conicts and problems inherent to their design. I come to the Portland State University Architecture Program from a background in art, music, poetry, construction and a devotion to sustainability, and permaculture. As a student of Womens Studies and Architecture I am committed to social and ecological justice, and view Architecture as an ideological praxis in need of criticism, engagement and co-optation for the greater good. I want to use the next three years of the undergraduate program to hone my artistic and theoretical abilities so that I can best be prepared for grad school. I hope to nd other students, architects and designers that share my interest in a sustainability that is more than greenwashed rhetoric. I seek a sustainability that is true to the origin of permaculture design, that asks of a design not just is it beautiful and is it good? but will this design do harm to our ecology? I dream of an architectural practice that does not merely coexist with nature, but is fundamentally united with it: Architecture and Nature are not naturally opposed. Everything Man has built is intrinsically a part of nature; the architecture of the trap-door spider is no less Architecture than what we study; the difference is a matter of scale and impact. We can address both of those metrics even on the level of Portland State University.

Cascadia CoHousing
WINTER 2011
cascadia cohousing is an experiment. it is an experiment in existing cohousing typologies, and an exploration of how cooperative living and urban agriculture can be integrated into the urban environment. it is an economic experiment, connecting cooperative ethos to live/work functionality. its program includes a 40 unit mixed use housing facility, with two bedroom lofts, studios and two bedroom condos, as well as seven units of retail space available to be utilized by cooperative businesses that form from groups living in the cohouse, be they artists, craftspeople, or otherwise. the existing hooper detox building is transformed into an extension of the peoples food coop, a grocery store and portland institution, featuring music, art and community workshops on the second oor. the form is concieved as a response to the solar path and site conditions, with the goal of maximizing land space for growing food via a series of greenroofed terraces stepping up toward the common house on the ne corner of the block. cascadia cohousing provides opportunity for food security, community building, micro-economic growth, and individual growth in a communal setting that is intergenerational and culturally diverse. it is a beginning to the quest for an urbanism that is not only economically sustainable, but which contributes actively to ecological and social context.

A Master Plan for Piletones

buenos aires 2011 study abroad with The Basic Initiative
During the the summer of 2011 I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to learn and work in an informal settlement called Los Piletones. While in Los Piletones I worked withh a team of students to produce a master plan for Los Piletones. The settlement (known as a villa in Argentina), had grown informally, and lacked basic infrastructure for water, sewage, roads and streetlighting. The master plan included establishing a relationship with all community stakeholders, such as Corporaction Buenos Aires Sur, establishing a ve year timeline for basic improvements, and most importantly praciticing asset based design.

The Community of Los Piletones faces a lot of difcult environmental and social challenges, some challenges are also great opportunities waiting to be understood. We worked within the SEED metric, a metric for measuring social sustainability in design. Agnatur? Cus apienias evelici anihil magnis eum aci cone cumquaturia dolupta venti ut et accupiciet enem. CAVE
SPRING 2011 ADV. GRAPHICS

Hypothetically located over a bench just west of the Shattuck Annex, this structure is intended to provide shelter in a section of Portland State University with little outdoor shelter. The design seeks to meet this lack of outdoor private space on the Portland State University campus. There are very few places to retreat into and feel sullen, an experience many if not all students can relate to. Cave is a permeable cocoon.

The form is generated with the Grasshopper script at right. This script can take any surface and subdivide it into a triangular lattice with adjustable dimensions. Cave is composed of thousands of plywood facets, each specic to the particular curvature of the original surface.

Cave would be assembled via cnc cut plywood, which would shape each individual facet of the many, and then would be assembled together into self supporting frames. Modied with cnc cut glass or plexi to ll the triangular voids it would become truly weather resistant.
