5-1 Usage Considerations
To ensure stable operation, low-dropout regulators (TA48 XX /TA48M XX /TA48L XX /TA48S XX /TA58M XX /TA58L XX /TA78DS XX) are required to maintain low output impedance. At low temperatures, the impedance of the output capacitor connected to the regulator can increase, causing voltage ripple. Therefore, it is recommended to use a capacitor with good temperture stability. Since the output ripple is affected by the input voltage and load conditions and by PCB traces, the output capacitor value should be carefully selected through experimentation using real hardware. The output capacitor should be placed as close as possible to the regulator terminal. Capacitors should be connected between the input terminal and GND, and between the output terminal and GND. The capacitor values must be adjusted, depending on PCB traces and the wiring conditions. A thorough review must be made, especially at high and low temperatures, in choosing capacitors. Do not apply voltages which are negative relative to GND to the input and / or output terminals. Take special care in building a voltage boost circuit. If the input terminal is subjected to a surge voltage exceeding the absolute maximum rating , or if the output terminal is subjected to a voltage higher than the input terminal voltage, the IC may be damaged. Special care is required, especially in the latter case. If the input terminal is shorted to GND during normal use, the output terminal voltage will exceed that of the input voltage (GND, 0 V); As a result the capacitor discharges through the IC to the input, causing the IC to be damaged. To prevent these situations, a Zener diode and an ordinary silicon diode should be connected as shown to the right: If the input voltage is too high, the three-terminal regulator will dissipate extra power, causing an increase in the junction temperature. If this happens, the recommended solution is to connect an input limiting resistor, RSD to lower the power dissipation of the IC. The power dissipation of the IC, PD, is calculated as follows: PD = (VIN' VOUT) x IOUT + VIN' x IB If VIN' falls below the minimum voltage required by the IC, an increase in ripple, deterioration of input regulation, and occasionally even parasitic oscillation may result. Use the following formula to determine the RSD value so as to achieve a design with sufficient margins. RSD < VIN VIN' IOUT + IB

Power dissipation is calculated using the following equation: PD = VIN x IB + (VIN VOUT) x IOUT...... 1 PD: Power dissipation (W) VIN: Input voltage (V) VOUT: Output voltage (V) IB: Bias current (A) IOUT: Output current (A) The route by which heat generated inside a power supply IC is dissipated to the outside can be represented in terms of thermal resistance and thermal capacitance of the constituent devices. The thermal radiation equivalent circuit of a three-terminal regulator is shown below.

f: Heat sink thermal resistance (heat sink to ambient) j-a (= i + b): Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance (without heat sink) j-c (= i): Junction-to-case thermal resistance
* c and f are used for the TO-220 package with heat sink mounting holes.
Junction Temperature
Tj = PD x j-a + Ta...... 2 Tj: Junction Temperature (C) PD: Power dissipation (W) j-a: Case-to-ambient thermal resistance (C/W) Ta: Ambient temperature (C)
Note: Use the above equations for thermal design of a three-terminal regulator, based on the actual conditions in which it will be used. It is recommended to derate the maximum power dissipation allowed for the absolute maximum voltage, current and temperature ratings. For the values of PD(MAX) and Tj(MAX), see the datasheets of indiridual devices.
