Ressie Crossing Guard John Dangerfield retires at 87 after 21 years
most important asset our children, Mayor Tim Darr said in acknowledging a man he observed he has known most of his life. Darr said he first encountered Dangerfield when he did some work as a young man at Avtex, the final incarnation of the American Viscose rayon manufacturing facility. But I never knew his last name was Dangerfield, Darr said, adding a very respectful, Hes a great man, to the crossing guards retirement accolades. So, how does it feel to finally be getting some respect? we asked, adding our two cents to a Rodney Dangerfield reference our own Mr. Dangerfield has probably heard at least more than once too often. What do you mean? I still dont get none! he replied with a good-natured laugh despite our efforts at a cheap one liner. Joking about his age 87 Dangerfield said one young woman Shes just as sweet as she can be recently told him, Pops, youre older than Methuselah. I said, I am not. And she said, Well I know you are because you used to help me get across the street and now I have a baby in school and youre helping him get home. So how many of his communitys youth does he think he has helped homeward over the course of his second career as a crossing guard under the auspices of FRPD, we wondered. A whole lot of them. On a serious note, Dangerfield said it was his age catching up with him that led to his decision to call it a day in front of Ressie. By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report One famous Mr. Dangerfield, Rodney, just doesnt get any respect however on Sept. 1 the Front Royal Town Council and the town police department gave a boatload of respect to another Dangerfield. The occasion was the retirement of John E. Dangerfield after 1 years as the public school crossing guard on Criser Road in front of Ressie Jeffries El-
ementary School. It was our Mr. Dangerfields second retirement. His first, he told us was from a 30-plus year career at American Viscose. In fact his tenure there, ending at age 65, transcended all three owners of what was for almost 50 years the towns major private sector employer. But in September 011, Dangerfield was getting his dues for his post-Avtex retirement service to this community and its children. Hes been looking over our

get out. And one time a kid came out and I didnt see the kid and he went out into the street. Im standing there, so its my fault. And I knew it was time to leave because I dont want my kids going out there when Im responsible for them. I just didnt see him Im getting old. Im not making an excuse just that Father Time got me. Too bad more of us dont have that degree of self-policing and accountability in our day to day lives maybe wed remove ourselves from various positions of authority before we begin doing more harm than good Reflecting on all those children, even that last one he didnt see coming, that have crossed the street safely at ages where the hazards of coming head to head with an automobile are a distant concern at best, Dangerfield told us, Ill be honest with you and all the parents, I know what they say about kids but I have never seen a real bad kid if you show them some respect, theyll show it to you They were my joy when they make a mistake, you aint got to fuss at them, just make them understand. Deceased man discovered in car in Scottish Inn parking lot

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report On Sept. 14, at 9:48 AM the Front Royal Police Department responded to the parking lot of the Scottish Inn at 533 South Royal Ave. in reference to an unresponsive male in a vehicle in the parking lot. Warren County Emergency Medical Units from FR Company 1 arrived and determined that the male subject was deceased. A D.C. area reporter at the scene on the outside chance the body might be the allegedly missing Michaele Salahi (see related story), told us it appeared there was a prescription tranquilizer medicine bottle visible in the vehicle after the body had been removed. Detectives from the Criminal Investigative Division of the Front Royal Police Department are investigating the cause of death. This investigation is ongoing as to the cause of death. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective Jason Lethcoe at the Criminal Investigation Division of the Front Royal Police Department at (540) 63608 or the Front Royal Police Department Dispatch Center at (540) 635111. Sirs, In response to Mr. Hartsell scathing attack on my opinion of the lack of compromise and decision making by our Congress in the recent handling of the deficit reduction plan and debt ceiling, I have to thank him for finally enlightening me that I am a liberal. I then wished to learn more about my new self. Wikipedia described me as being for liberty, equal rights, constitutionalism, human rights, capitalism, free trade, free religion, and espousing a wide array of views. Wow, what a compliment! StudentNewsDaily.com tells me I should be a left-winged democrat and believe our government should solve all our problems, with no one in need, and embrace all entitlement programs. Hold on; I think Ive been labeled with a term that stereotypes me as an individual without a mind, unable to decide when government should be involved in our lives helping people that require it, and when they are clearly interfering with our lives. It also tells me that Im not living up to my supposed views regarding other social issues like gun control, abortion, the death penalty, education and more. Now Im really confused. Maybe Mr. Hartsell didnt really know what he was talking about when he prescribed this label to me. Looking back at what I wrote, I wondered what might have caused
Mr. Hartsell to feel so strongly about my opinion. Was it my wish for compromise, or calling someone stubborn? It was probably asking the wealthy to return some of the money that we in the lower classes gave to them in abundance for allowing us to purchase their goods and services. Does he possibly think that it was already returned to us when these companies gave us the opportunity to work for them so we could make them more money and they could then reward us with pay raises, bonuses, healthcare benefits and stock in their companies? Maybe Mr. Hartsell didnt know what he was talking about when he purported to know all about the principles and merits of capitalism and free markets. I mean, he doesnt even believe our money is real. Before I had a chance to read my letter that was recently printed in the Warren County Report, my initial thought was, I sure hope that my letter wasnt butchered before it went to print. Thankfully, my letter remained intact but, unfortunately, it was the interpretation of my letter that was butchered in the editors response. Nowhere in my original letter did I say that the editor was a Marxist. I simply pointed out that the idea of a progressive income tax (that he seemed to support) is consistent with Marxist ideology. If the editor interpreted that as my way of labeling him as a Marxist then maybe he has a guilty conscience. In contrast to my charge of the rich being plundered the editor says, it is Americas middle and working classes who are being plundered by a ruling corporate elite that looks upon American society and the world as its own personal plantation. Of course this makes no sense. Private enterprise provides the goods and services that the consuming public demands at prices that consumers are willing to pay. It is only by engaging in peaceful, voluntary transactions with the public that corporations can make any profit at all. This is not to mention all of the jobs that are created that pay wages that employees voluntarily agree to receive. The editors statement was correct in one sense, though. The working and middle classes are being plundered but they are, instead, being plundered by the three layers of government and its vast army of bureaucrats that forcefully confiscate our income and regulate virtually every aspect of our private lives. The grossest misinterpretation of my position is the editors assertion that I support the close and corrupt relationship that big government enjoys with big business. I am then accused of believing in a corporate-driven, theocratic American totalitarianism. In my original letter I advocated capitalism and free markets. The 37,000 highly paid lobbyists inside the DC Beltway are not a characteristic of the free market at all. What is described in the editors response is an economic system that much closer resembles mercantilism or neo-fascism; two economic systems that I adamantly oppose. The editor then tries to discredit my letter by referring to American historical events - or at least his erroneous, watered-down, public middle school version of historical events. He blames private enterprise for causing the Great Depression (as have Marxists) and faults Professor DiLorenzo for criticizing FDRs economic program that was implemented in response to it. Of course it wasnt private enterprise that caused the Great Depression but the boombust business cycle put into motion by the easy money, artificially-low interest rate policies of the Federal Reserve. In conclusion, I have three final points that I would like to make: First, for the editor to deny being a Marxist, parts of his response sure make implications to Marxs theory of class consciousness. Some parts of his response sound like they could have been copied straight out of Marxs Communist Manifesto. Second, his scenario of a child drowning in a swimming pool was ridiculous, irrelevant, and a complete misrepresentation of the functions of the market economy. Third, the mercantilist, corporatist, neo-fascist economy that currently exists has nothing in common with free markets. As a free market libertarian I do not believe that the government should subsidize corporations, contract with corporations, regulate corporations, tax corporations, or, indeed, exist at all. Mr. Hartsell, like ideologues of any stripe, and more specifically most Libertarians I have encountered directly, seems to have a difficult time separating political and economic theory from the reality of the world in which they live. Case in point, Mr. Hartsells quote: The poor and middle classes have regular access to meals and comforts that were unheard of even by kings just a century ago. I, unlike Mr. Hartsell and his theoretical support base, live in the here and now, not in some time-warped universe where definitions of economic and social well being cross centuries and the scientific, medical and social advances of those centuries. To have a TV, AC, refrigerator or polio vaccination in the 1st Century does not a wealthy man make even if Henry VIII or Louis XIV didnt possess such things. Rather, the ability to survive family medical emergencies without being thrown into bankruptcy; or the ability to maintain home ownership through the radical swings of modern free-market capitalism might mean you have joined a viable middle class in a functioning economic-social system of the 1st Century. Case in point two This is not to mention all of the jobs that are created that pay wages that employees voluntarily agree to receive. So I guess as Ron Paul argues elimination of a minimum wage will help the poor. Again the long-held Libertarian and Austrian school of economics lie of trickle-down economics or the more billions of dollars in the personal bank accounts of the top one or two percent of society, the better off we all are with our voluntarily taken wages for our voluntary attempts to see that we and our families will eat regularly and have a roof over our heads. In the end Mr. Hartsell quotes the Libertarian Manifesto As a free market libertarian I do not believe that the government should subsidize corporations, contract with corporations, regulate corporations, tax corporations, or, indeed, exist at all. And there it is Mr. Hartsell and his ideological brethren do not believe in a federal government, perhaps any government designed to oversee and control the worst excesses we as humans, domestic or foreign, would exert over each other. For in the real world of the 1st Century, and unfortunately long before that, no neighborhood association, no municipal or even state government can protect the whole of society, not only from aggressive neighbors, but from ourselves at our worst. And there lies the fundamental difference between the libertarian and the democratic socialist, between Mr. Hartsell and me our relative perceptions of the motive and intent of individual human beings driven to the acquisition of great wealth and power. Mr. Hartsell and his Austrian school economists and libertarian politicians believe their motives are benign and their wealth will wash us all in gold or perhaps they really believe the simple act of acquiring that wealth and power is a modern manifestation of divine right; the right of a ruling class to lord over all others whose abilities, inclinations or priorities are not measured in having more money than one and ones family could ever need to live a fruitful and meaningful existence. And in the end if we collectively are stupid enough to buy into either of those lies maybe we deserve no better than the consequences of the historical epoch we are allowing to unfold before us each day for after all, as the ever-wise they say people get the government they deserve. And as for those who futilely dissent against that emerging history of a new world order of corporate wealth ber alles, as George Orwell so ominously wrote in 1948, not of a class war of the poor against the rich, but of the rise of unbending totalitarian ideology, If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever.) Unfortunately Mr. Hartsell and his compatriots believe only a government of the people, by the people and for the people (did Marx write that?) can wear that boot. But from my perspective it fits quite nicely on the foot of a rightwing, libertarian-enabled dictatorship of the corporate state and its Blackwater-gone-wild bands of murderous psychopathic mercenaries.
DiLorenzo is correct in his attack on FDRs efforts to provide a financial cushion during the Depression. For example, it was FDRs Agricultural Adjustment Act that called for the destruction of six million pigs and ten million acres of cotton - all while many Americans were ALREADY trying to ward off starvation. This was in addition to his controls on the growth of new crops to restrict the market supply. This was FDRs disastrous attempt to create wealth through artificially-high food prices. Its just too bad that many Americans had to starve to death to prove his policies to be complete failures. Hey, maybe we can blame that on the rich, too! The editor then asks the most asinine question that I have ever heard or read. He asks, When does our - the middle classs - standard of living begin to show that increase in the wake of de-regulated capitalism? Is this really a serious question? The poor and middle classes have regular access to meals and comforts that were unheard of even by kings just a century ago. For instance, do people NOT live in houses with heat, air conditioning, and indoor plumbing? Do we NOT have vaccines that have eradicated illnesses such as polio and smallpox? Do we NOT have the ability to travel cross-country in a matter of hours instead of weeks? Do we NOT have automobiles with television screens, DVD players, back-up cameras, and parallel parking functions? Do we NOT have the ability to watch flat screen televisions with 100+ channels? Do we NOT have cell phones with more functions and memory than most PCs did just a decade ago? Oh wait, maybe those things are just a figment of my imagination. The fact is, we are far, far wealthier that 95 percent of the worlds population, and yet, the editor wants to know when he can expect an increase in his standard of living?!? Does he live in a cave? If not, he should take a look around his home, enjoy the comforts and amenities, and then thank a capitalist. The editor then laments that our economic recovery enabled as it was by trillions of dollars of middle-class American money is slow in coming to Main Street. Sometimes people will ask, What should the government do to get us out of this recession? The fact that we are in a recession should be proof enough that the government has done too much already. Austrian-school economist Murray Rothbard once wrote, What, then, can the government do to help the poor? The only correct answer is the libertarian answer: Get out of the way. Let the government get out of the way of the productive energies of all groups of the population, rich, middle class, and poor alike, and the result will be an enormous increase in the welfare and the standard of living of everyone, and most partic-

Mike Glavis called him back at 11:55 PM to get the details. According to Sheriff McEathron eight to 10 minutes after that conversation ended Deputy Glavis reached Mrs. Salahi by phone. During a Wednesday afternoon press conference in front of the WCSO shortly before 5 PM, the sheriff told local and D.C. area media that during that conversation Michaele Salahi seemed calm, was engaged in conversation, and assured the deputy that she had left the residence with a good friend and was where she wanted to be. Mrs. Salahi advised that she did not want Mr. Salahi to know where she was, McEathron said. Responding to a question, the sheriff said his deputy was able to verify Mrs. Salahis voice from previous conversations and characteristic verbal expressions. Following his conversation with Michaele Salahi some time after midnight, Deputy Glavis called Mr. Salahi to tell him his wife was safe but did not want to come home. Dont Stop Believing Twelve hours after the sheriff s office told Tareq they had spoken with his wife and she was safe, TMZ ran a story saying they just spoke with Tareq and that he believed his wife was abducted but he doesnt feel the cops are taking the situation seriously. According to TMZ, he believes Michaele had been FORCED to make the phone calls [to the Warren County Sheriff s office] by her abductor and believes she is in very real danger especially because the Salahis have received death threats in the past. FBI agents (and TV crews) descended the afternoon of Sept. 14 on the Warren County home of Tareq and Michaele Salahi to investigate allegations that Mrs. Salahi had been kidnapped. Rather than being held against her will, Mrs. Salahi has instead run off with Journey lead guitarist Neal Schon, according to the Hollywood gossip site TMZ.com, which reported on Sept. 14 that Michaele was in Memphis where the band is set for a concert with Foreigner. It was soon being reported nationally that the bands publicist had confirmed that scenario and that Michaele had posted Facebook pix of her and Schon. Separate Ways The first hint of potential domestic trouble in the Salahi home came on Sept. 7 when Tareq sent this (topbilled) writer a Facebook add request with a message saying he had set up his own profile, sans Michaele. This seemed very odd since they usually do everything together. However, a faithful reader and sometimes would-be tabloid reporter informed us he had spotted the Salahis together at their favorite local eatery Mikado in Riverton Commons on Friday, Sept. 9 and that everything seemed fine with Michaele hugging and Tareq worrying over the health of staff. According to Warren County Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron, Mr. Salahi called the sheriff s office Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 11:50 PM to report he had not seen his wife for six hours and considered her missing. Deputy

Front Royal United Methodist quilters at work By Carol Ballard Warren County Report The stitches are tiny, but the intent is huge In a Sunday school room at the back of the big stone church, four members of the Mission Quilters sat around a large work table. They quickly and quietly worked at finishing their Dresden Plate quilt in time to display it at the Front Royal Festival of the Leaves on Oct. 8. Were hurrying to get it done, said Eleanor Chadwell, spokesperson for the group. At the festival, they will take donations and give out tickets for the drawing to be held at their 55th annual Front Royal United Methodist Womens Bazaar at the church on Nov. 4-5. They plan to donate all proceeds from the quilt and divide them equally among five local charities, as they have done for the last three years. As they stitched, the ladies told the story of how they came to be where they are now. One of the goals in our church was to create small fellowship groups, one of the ladies offered, and Dot Maddox, one of the founders of the group, finished with, Ours turned out to be one of the best, with what we do and where our money goes. The most important thing is fellowship, friendship and the reward
A quilt detail of giving. It means a lot that its a mission that goes to local people in need. Its really needed here, Betty Sue Howard emphasized. Our minister, {the Reverend Gary Heaton}, is pleased, said Dot. We had all quilted some, but it was a big difference when we put it on the big frame- its harder to quilt this way because you cant move the square around, Betty Sue said. Dot and Eleanor created the project and Dot observed quilters at a sister Methodist church to learn more. They invited an expert quilter from that group to come and demonstrate putting the quilt on the frame and further instruct in the fine points of quilting it. The first quilt, a sampler, was begun in early 008, took almost years and was finished in late 009. After that, experience speeded up the process and the second and third quilts each took one year. They all agreed that its a lot of work and it takes all of their efforts to get it done every year. There are actually nine members of the quilting circle, which also includes Susan Schneider, Peggy Burke, Jo Petty, Terry Knerr, and Wanda Ralls. We knew each other to talk to, but weve gotten closer, said Phyllis Blankenship. We take some time off after Christmas and then in January or February, we do shopping trips together to buy fabric and we really enjoy them, said
Betty Sue. They donate the cost of the fabric and buy enough for the following year. This year they chose the Dresden Plate design and used a trendy quilt cutting method known as Stack and Whack. This involves making a stack of twelve layers of fabric, lining them up based on the design, and stitching through all the layers to keep them in place. A special cutting ruler then slices through it all. The pieces are then placed in a circle to form the plate, creating a unique kaleidoscope of color for each square. The women meet once a week during the year and several times a week as the festival and bazaar get closer. And if I have time, I just come in and work on it by myself, said Dot. The quilt will be on display at the Festival of the Leaves. Donations of $1 with a chance to win the quilt will be welcome. Drawing takes place on November 5 at the Front Royal United Methodist Womens Bazaar at the church. We keep everything on a simple basis. Its a donation to missions of the Methodist church. If people want a receipt, we can give them one. Who knows, if they donate, they might wind up with a quilt, Dot concluded. Community rallies with $67k to Wayside Theatre

Three weeks remain to hit $90k minimum needed for theaters survival
By Malcolm Barr Sr. Warren County Report Wayside Theatres appeal for up to $90,000 to keep our doors open beyond October is surpassing the expectations of management and board of directors with more than $67,000 donated by Wednesday, Sept. 14. Thats a tremendous response during the first two weeks of a 45day emergency campaign to keep the theater operating, said artistic director and general manager Warner Crocker. We have been overwhelmed and humbled by your generosity and caring which has increased our sense of urgency to complete this campaign and reach the goal of $90,000 by October 10. We are not there yet, and we have a ways to go. And we appreciate our patrons and supporters helping us spread the word. The appeal, published in the last issue of the Warren County Report, suggested a single $50 donation from all our supporters, According to reports, this has been very successful. However, these donations have been bolstered by corporate giving. For example, Marlow Motors led the charge in Front Royal the first day of the campaign and several others, including Royal Oak Computers, followed. More has come from businesses in Winchester and elsewhere. Wayside Theatre has served most all jurisdictions including its home community, Middletown, in the Northern Shenandoah Valley since 1961. In fact, and ironically, this is its milestone 50th anniversary year. Weve been asked about what happens if we meet or dont meet our goal. Certainly, if we dont meet our goal ... we have to look at closing the doors, Crocker said. By reaching the goal (and we feel confident with your continued support that we will) it will give our board of directors (led by John Westervelt of White Post) the opportunity to continue efforts to re-work our business plan and emerge with what we believe will be a more (financially) stable Wayside in the future. In light of the campaign so far, Crocker and his staff are moving forward on all our plans until such time as circumstances dictate different. Rehearsals for the next show, The Woman in Black, begins in late September. Pre-production plans for the ever-popular Christmas season show this year, the world premiere of Glory Bea! A Shenandoah Christmas Story, by local actor and high school teacher Richard Follett and the popular Wayside actor Larry Dahlke, also are under way. limit. Angles in-house testing at FRPD began at 11:50 PM and concluded at 1:10 AM, Sept. 4, according to the warrant. During that time four breath samples were taken from Angle, the trooper wrote in his report. The fact that Angles only admissible breath test did not indicate an illegal BAC content played heavily in a Sept. 7 press release from defense counsel Todd Gilbert. Responding to initial media reports of Angles arrest, Gilbert, the 15th District state representative, who now practices in the Front Royal law firm of Pond, Athey, Athey and Pond, wrote, A local newspaper (NVD) reported today that my clients percentage of blood alcohol at the scene of his arrest Saturday night was 091. What the media failed to report is that the handheld field test unit used for this test is so inherently unreliable and the protocols for its use so flawed that these results are inadmissible as evidence under Virginia law. The results which will be admissible in court, and which vindicate my client, showed that his actual blood alcohol

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report Following a phone tip and subsequent I-66 state police traffic stop in the late night hours of Sept. 3, Warren County finds itself at the center of both the professional and amateur wrestling worlds. No, a TNA world championship or spot on the 01 U.S. Olympic team wasnt decided during the Warren County or a surrounding county fair however, former Olympic champion and five-time Total Non-stop Action World Champion wrestler Kurt Angle was popped for DUI near the Linden exit in Warren County. Angle was traveling eastbound after an appearance at the Shenan-
doah County Fair when State Police Trooper Charles Robert Scally received a be on the lookout report of an erratically-driven vehicle. According to the arrest warrant the original report came from another motorist traveling behind a white Ford Taurus. When the vehicle passed the troopers location he began following it and wrote the car was weaving and driving down the center line of EB I-66. After pulling the car and identifying Angle from a Pennsylvania drivers license, the 6-foot, 40-pound, 4-year-old Angle responded to a question by admitting to drinking three beers. The trooper administered several
roadside sobriety tests, which he described Angle failing miserably. Among those tests were eye tracking; a partial recitation of the alphabet; backwards counting from 5348; walking, standing and a one-leg stand. An on-site breathalyzer test inadmissible in court due to inaccuracy issues showed a .091 result, which is .011 above the legal limit of .08. However, taken to Front Royal Police headquarters for a breathalyzer test admissible in court Angle blew only a .06, two hundredths under the legal blood-alcohol-content driving

Angle is scheduled for a hearing on the misdemeanor DUI charge on Oct. 4 at 11 AM. Gilbert said the defendant would be expected to appear for that misdemeanor criminal hearing. The week after the arrest, Warren County Commonwealths Attorney Brian Madden, whose office is handling the case, said to his knowledge the prosecution would proceed as scheduled despite the lack of an admissible breath test showing an illegal BAC reading from Angle. World class The 4-year-old Angle is one of the most successful amateur and professional wrestlers of all time. He was a 1996 Olympic gold medalist in heavyweight freestyle and currently is TNA World Champion in an unprecedented fifth title reign. He won his current title from Sting, a former ally whom he helped take the title from Mr. Anderson you remember him from the Matrix movie series, right? Wikipedia describes Angle as one of only four people to complete the amateur wrestling grand slam of winning the Junior National, the NCAAs, the World Championship, and Olympic title. He was named one of the top 15 college wrestlers of all time by USA Wrestling and has been named the greatest shoot wrestler. According to Wikipedia, after initially turning down offers to join the World Wrestling Federation, Angle signed a multi-year contract with the company in 1998. After leaving WWE, Angle joined Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), where he became the second wrestler in TNA to win TNAs Triple Crown and the first man to hold all three TNA championships simultaneously. While in TNA, his real-life wife Karen began accompanying him to the ring and playing a part in his on-screen storylines. The wrestling soaps That story line turned ugly when Angle and his wife separated and she became involved with wrestler and TNA official Keith Jarrett. Karen Angle later became Karen Jarrett leading to numerous violent confrontations between Jarrett and Angle where the long, gray line between wrestling soap opera and true hatred and violence between big and angry men seemed blurred. As reported in Wikipedia and this is why youve got to love this stuff: Following a series of blindside beatdowns of Angle by Jarrett, including interference by Karen against her ex, on Feb. 13 Jarrett defeated Angle in a singles match. As a result Angle was forced to walk Karen down the aisle, when she and Jarrett renewed their wedding vows on the March 3 edition of Impact. After the match Angle hinted at a possible retirement by leaving his wrestling boots in the ring. But alas, the man scorned had second thoughts. On March 3 Angle proceeded to destroy the wedding set with an axe and forced wedding guest, New York Jet Bart Scott to tap out with the ankle lock. But on April 17 at Lockdown, Jarrett defeated Angle in an Ultra Male Rules Two out of Three Falls steel cage match, with help from Karen. But then Angle elicited the help of female wrestling force Chyna. Angle and Chyna defeated the Jarretts in a mixed tag-team match. Jarrett challenged Angle to a Parking Lot Brawl and agreed to sign a contract that would force him to move to Mexico without Angles children, should he lose the match. Angle ended up winning the fight after choking Jarrett with a shirt, forcing him to say adis.

entrepreneur. Mr. Murray also promises no tax increases. Who could disagree with that? I pay my fair share of both Town and County taxes so I am very aware of and sensitive to any increases in taxes on local businesses. But at the same time we must realize that tax revenues allow us to provide needed services, and one of the things I like about local government is that local citizens have much more control over how their tax money is spent. Simply put, if we think taxes are too high we can decide (by majority) what services we would like to curtail. If we want/need a new school or additional recreation facilities, then it is up to us to pay for them, adjusting the tax rate accordingly. If we look at the last 10 years, elected officials in the county from both Parties have voted to increase real estate taxes for needed programs. So to say there would be a promise of no tax increases would be unreasonable especially in the light of the almost certain cutback in Federal and State grants that bring additional resources to the County and Town. Given the current national feeling about budget cutting, I am willing to bet that many of these grant programs will be severely curtailed or eliminated. It will be up to the citizens of the county to determine if a desired service or upgrade can be supported by a tax increase. It is my view that the title supervisor means that we have to supervise how our town and county officials spend our money. While I wont promise that we wont need to raise taxes to pay for what the citizens want, I will promise to supervise the spending of that money and make sure that as we used to say in the Navy, we get the most bang for the buck. Finally, I notice that the 3rd Annual Warren County Republican Committee Family Day Picnic is to be held on September 17, 011, from 11 AM to 3 PM. My team and I are planning to have a meet-thecandidate gathering and fundraiser that same day from 1 PM to 7 PM at Vino E Formaggio, 10 East Main Street. Dear sir: I would like to comment on several issues raised by my opponents: Regarding my connections to downtown Front Royal, for the last ten years Patricia and I have been, and will remain, extremely active in promoting downtown Front Royal as a destination for tourists and a special place for our citizens. We currently own two downtown businesses, Vino E Formaggio and Failmezger Group LC, and I maintain an office in our building (10-14 East Main Street), so Im downtown about six days a week. Recently I have opened up my office to any voter with a question for me, and it will continue to be open and available if I am chosen as supervisor. As an owner/occupier, I have invested significant personal resources in our building and the result is that when I have a vacancy it is always quickly rented. I applaud the recent announcement by the Town of Front Royal of a New Industrial Revitalization Fund to upgrade vacant buildings and bring them back on the tax rolls: I hope property owners will take advantage of this program. For example, breakfast can be had at L Dees and Wynns; lunch at the Main Street Deli, the Daily Grind, the Main Street Mill and Element, dinner at Soul Mountain, Lucky Star (with entertainment), The Wine and Duck, Apartment G and, of course, our wine bar, Vino E Formaggio. Sams 100th birthday party being planned

Sam Parsons, who will be 100 years old on Sept. 18, will be given a birthday party from 3-6 PM on Sept. 4 at the Rivermont Baptist Church at 575 Catlett Mountain Rd, Front Royal. Anyone who knows Sam or misses seeing him at his post at Martins, and wants to attend is welcome. Sam was a 13-year employee of Martins Food Store in Front Royal and retired two years ago. Linamen felony charges certified to grand jury

Defendant asserts priority of heaven over earth in explaining actions
were spotted on the center console of Linamens van he was asked to exit his vehicle. According to testimony from arresting officer Jason Winner of the Front Royal Police Department, Linamen initially began to drive away before Winner and other officers at the scene displayed their service weapons and suggested he stop. Linamen complied and a subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a loaded Dan Wesson .357 Magnum revolver in the drivers door pocket of the van barrel down. Other materials were discovered in the van that officers initially believed to be pipe bombs. A subsequent inspection by state police experts revealed that the pipes contained no explosive materials, so were not at the time armed or dangerous materials. Authorities later discovered the van was registered to Linamens wife, identified by Linamen in court as Mercy Jo Amboy. Testimony offered by Linamen near the hearings conclusion elaborated on the defendants belief system. It was also reflected in comments officers said Linamen made to them at the time of his arrest. One arrest warrant indicates when asked if he had a valid drivers license, Linamen told

Linamen to a Warren County Grand Jury scheduled to meet on Oct. 3. The 59-year-old Linamen is charged with driving without a license after being declared a habitual offender and possession of a concealed firearm by a convicted felon. Linamen was stopped at a July 30 traffic safety checkpoint on the 00 block of Commerce Avenue around 10 PM. Asked to produce a drivers license, Linamen produced one issued from the Kingdom of Heaven. Linamen, a child of God, NOT the state. Refuse to grant anyone jurisdiction over my sovereign powers (quoting Preamble, Virginia Constitution, I hearby stand on common law (7th Amendment, Constitution for the united states of America, circa 1870). (capitalization in context). Linamen also wrote that the two new charges against him are NOT crimes but God-given, unalienable Rights During his Sept. 7 hearing Linamen
asked what person or property have I injured? Did you question him and realize he felt bound by the Kingdom of Heaven? defense counsel Amanda Wiseley asked arresting officer Winner. Yes, Winner replied. Hate or civil rights? Wiseley asked Winner if he was aware the Virginia Constitution referenced the sovereign powers of individuals. Winner replied No but added that during police training he had encountered similar belief systems being fostered by terrorist, hate-type groups. At that point Linamen spoke up from the defense table, asking if he could address the court. You will have an opportunity, the judge told him. Linamens wife later defended her husbands belief system, stating he was not a member of a hate group but simply a strong advocate of a belief system based on God-given individual rights. Mrs. Linamen also verified that all of her husbands previous felony convictions were driving related. In his Aug. 1 written affidavit Linamen also contends that an early release from prison on April nd, 003, proved my only felony convictions were undeniably unconstitutional. Court records indicate Linamens appeal of the habitual offender felony driving conviction that netted him over four years of a possible one to five year sentence was denied by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in March 003. The federal appeals court dismissal of the appeal stated Linamen had not met the necessary criteria to prove his lower court conviction did not meet procedural standards or violated his Constitutional rights. Perhaps rather than a wink, wink you were right legally from federal judges, his subsequent release reflected a belief Linamen had already served enough prison time on a habitual offender traffic conviction with only the law itself as a victim. After Judge Ballard certified his case to the Oct. 4 grand jury docket, Linamen told the court, I would like a fully-informed jury. Linamen remains incarcerated at the Warren County Jail without bond. Selective patriotism At the root of Linamens defense is his belief that both the U.S. and Virginia Constitutions guarantee its citizens sovereign powers and common law rights that supersede any state or federal authority over them. It is an anti-government philosophy increasingly popular among rightwing extremists, including some ac-

Online searches, including Wikipedia, indicate the Oath Keepers was founded in 009 by Stewart Rhodes, a former US paratrooper, Yale Law School graduate, and past staffer for Libertarian Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. According to its website, Oath Keepers is a non-partisan association of currently serving military, reserves, National Guard, peace officers, and veterans who swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic and meant it. Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and that oath will be kept. We wont just follow orders. The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the Courage and Conduct of this Army - and this Marine Corps, This Air Force, This Navy and the National Guard units of these sovereign states. Despite its high-minded rhetoric of individual liberty over oppressive government, the Oath Keepers focus on governmental abuse seems highly selective, ignoring many legislative reductions of individual Constitutional protections initiated during the Republican presidency of George W. Bush and predating the presidency of Democrat Barack Obama. The group has been accused of racism by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a charge Rhodes and others involved in Oath Keepers deny. In an extensive March-April 010 Mother Jones exploration of the group, Justine Sharrock wrote, Glenn Beck loves them. Tea Partiers court them. Congressmen listen to them. The author of that report, Larry Keller, described Oath Keeper Richard Mack as a longtime militia hero and quoted him as having said, The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our federal government One can only wonder where these guys were during the promotion and passage of the so-called Patriot Act and its legislative assault on the U.S. Constitution and individual liberties circa 001-008. However it is easy to see how someone who has served over four years in prison on a victimless traffic conviction might be attracted to such a philosophy. And it is doubtful race is a motivating factor for Linamen in his attraction to the Oath Keepers philosophy. The Sept. 7 hearing was attended by Linamens wife, Mercy, who is Southeast Asian. And Linamens wife was accompanied by two black male companions at the Warren County General District Court hearing. Linamen and his family reside in Prince William County.

91-year-old driver injured in collision with train

A collision involving a vehicle and a train occurred in Front Royal on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 13, and resulted in the driver being admitted to the hospital. At approximately :05 PM, Front Royal police responded to the crash on Manassas Avenue, approximately 00 feet north of East 7th Street. Upon arrival, police found that Philip E. Funk, 91, of Long Meadow Road, Middletown, VA was travelling south on Manassas Avenue and was crossing the railroad tracks in a 1994 Buick when his car was struck on the passenger side by an eastbound Norfolk and Southern train. Funk, who stated that he was travelling at approximately 10 mph, did not see or hear the train before the collision. The train was travelling at approximately 30 mph. Mr. Funk was the only occupant in his vehicle. The impact of the collision forced the vehicle off of the tracks and into a fence, owned by the Town of Front Royal, resulting in approximately $1,000 in damage. Mr. Funks vehicle was totaled and the trains locomotive received approximately $100 in damage. Mr. Funk was transported by Front Royal Fire and Rescue to Warren Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The crash was investigated by Traffic Enforcement Officer D. Orye and no charges have been placed at this time. (From a release)

No, I cant climb a tree like a monkey, but if a grizzly bear, a black bear or even a teddy bear were chasing me, you can be sure Id try. Yes, I do like bananas, but not if theyre too ripe and mushy. Did we survive? Keep reading. Despite the almost certainty that wed be chased, attacked, mauled and/or eaten by a bear, according to Park Ranger Suzie Sunshine, we ventured into the great unknown. At least we were armed with bear spray to protect us. We did have bear spray right? No, but I was carrying sunscreen. SPF 90. Cant be too careful with those UV rays. The reason we didnt have bear spray? Thats a good question. We talked about getting it. We laughed about it. But for some reason, we never pulled the trigger, so to speak. At 60 bucks per canister, its not cheap, although I might say otherwise when Im bookin down the trail with Mr. Bear behind me. Look at that! I said as we sat on a log eating granola bars and enjoying the scenery. My wife and my cousin werent looking. They were already running the other way. Its a deer! I told them. She had just popped out of the woods and was less than 15 yards away. Dont do that! my wife said. We thought it was a you know what? A you know what? Yeah, one of those. Sorry. Ill be more specific next time. But I wasnt. Did you see that? This time it was a marmot. Think of a squirrel on steroids. Later, it was my cousins turn. Wait, I hear something! And he may have, but it wasnt the hairy beast. Obviously, we were all on edge. As it turned out, the closest we got to a bear was through the binoculars from the lodge parking lot. We werent chased, attacked, mauled or munched on, but something did get us. Something even more bloodthirsty than a bear. Mosquitoes. Millions of them. So yes, we survived hiking in bear country. Three of us went into the woods, and three of us came out of the woods with all of our limbs and organs intact. This trip was stressful. Vacations arent supposed to be like that, and thats why Ive already put my foot down for next year. Lets go someplace where there are no bears. Ok? My companions agreed. But somethings bothering me. Something about the place we picked that makes me a bit uneasy. Im just not sure what it is. Death Valley here we come. The author found mysterious tracks around the house the other day. Big tracks. From abused people, Denney takes on world of abandoned animals
ecutive director of the Julia Wagner Animal Shelter in Front Royal. Its just something I always wanted to do. The opportunity came along, and here I am, she said in an interview in her office, three days after beginning her new vocation. A self-confessed animal lover and mom of a shelter cat, a mutt and a 0-year-old daughter, she has a demonstrated knowledge of non-profit management and a gift for creating an environment where diverse [people] work together for the greater good. She most recently supervised a staff of four professionals, five paraprofessionals, and 0 volunteers in the domestic violence field. Denney oversaw a 4-hour, 16-bed domestic violence/homeless shelter in Winchester, part of a 3-year management career. She earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Shenandoah University (00) and is working toward a masters in business administration (MBA) at the same college. Her husband, Thomas, is director of public works in Winchester.

As a direct result of our article and photo of long-time animal shelter resident Stewie, the black-and-white Staffordshire terrier has been returned to his original owner. The owner, who due to privacy reasons may not be identified by the Humane Society, saw the story and photo in our last edition and immediately went to the shelter where she identified the dog as being the one who disappeared from his Front Royal home more than eight months ago. While its unfortunate Stewie was away from home so long we congratulate the shelter for caring for him, and ourselves for publicizing his plight that has resulted in happiness all around reunited and it feels so good. Town gets conflicting reactions on festival changes

crowds up to 750; $15 per hour for crowds to ,999; and $50 per hour for crowds over 3,000; $40 per hour, $75 per hour, and $10 per hour for solid waste service along the same crowd guidelines; And $5 per day for electric service. While there were other proposed changes, as might be expected scheduling and fees drew the most comment. Pointing to a restriction that would limit major events to one a month, DFRs Martin suggested a change. Martin noted that the monthly restriction could be counter-productive in that if the Festival of Leaves occurs in October that would eliminate the ability to hold what was considered a successful and popular Downtown Trick or Treat event on Halloween last year. Pointing out that there are months in which no festivals occur, Martin suggested rather than the once a month restriction, it be changed to 1 a year. Councilman Shae Parker pointed to the wording of an exemption section on events, including school sporting events that seemed to exclude Randolph-Macon Academy, therefore implying R-MA might have to apply for permits for some of its events. Town Manager Steve Burke agreed the wording should be amended to see that R-MA was not excluded from exceptions offered to public schools. Charges?!!? But the notion of paying for security and clean-up services brought the most discussion and disagreement. Mayor Tim Darr explained the town wasnt trying to turn a profit on such events, but recoup a portion of its costs in seeing such large events go off safely and leave Historic Downtown Front Royal in the same, lovely condition festival goers found it in. Currently the town receives no compensation for these services. The justification for that situation and the potential continuation of it is the theory that special events, including private, for-profit ones, bring people downtown who might not normally come, leading to increased business both during events and from return visits by festival goers from outside the area or the town. By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report During a Sept. 1 work session the Front Royal Town Council absorbed information from staff on proposed changes to its festival and events ordinances. Over the past year conflicting interests of various downtown businesses, organizers of some festivals and the town came to a head several times. Those times most prominently included a scheduling conflict between the countys 175th Anniversary Committee and Downtown Front Royal over when their respective dancing in the streets to live music festivals would occur; and over a privatelysponsored, for-profit Celtic heritage festival organizers desire to close downtown streets, potentially cutting Historic Downtown businesses off from their own customers. That organizer, Michael Turner, was present for the work session discussion, along with several downtown business people, WC Chamber of Commerce representatives and Downtown Front Royal Executive Director Jim Martin. The big two issues are road closures and costs to the town for providing security and clean up. Restrictions on road closures shall be enacted based upon anticipated attendance and the number of events per year, the staff report stated. Also proposed is a fee structure to compensate the town for at least a portion of its costs in providing its employees for non-scheduled duty assignments, primarily in security (police) and clean up (refuse department). The proposed fee structure includes: $50 per hour for police service for

Is it worth it for us or not? If not, explain that if we (the town) provide these services you have to pay for it. Events that are verified as economically productive for the town and its existing, taxpaying businesses should perhaps be considered funded through the towns tourism budget, Sill suggested. Others that are more specialized, private and drawing a more self-contained and special interest crowd would be the ones the town should impose fees on. However the organizer of one festival viewed by a number of local businesses and councilmen as fitting that latter category, had another perspective. Organizer Michael Turner told council that his for-profit Celtic Festival could become one of the towns big festivals if the town would help, rather than hinder his ability to operate and profit from his operations. While failing to gain the non-profit status some councilmen believed he said he would have before he returned for his second permit application this year, Turner has promised to donate at least some positive revenues to selected organizations. This year an organization proposed was a private family counseling group with a specific lifestyle agenda it appeared to promote as part of its operation. Councilman Hollis Tharpe said he didnt believe the town should get back all its costs, adding we already catch flack sometime for watering our flowers. Tharpe suggested the town take some money out of its tourism budget to cover police and refuse expenses, as an alternative to charging fees for those services. Mayor Darr replied that would simply mean the town would have to find additional money to reimburse the tourism budget it had committed to. Thats just robbing Peter to pay Paul, the town manager observed. The option of allowing event organizers provide their own security and clean up was also discussed. The success of such privately undertaken security and clean up would then be reviewed after the initial experience of organizers providing their own security and clean up. A bond to cover the potential of town costs for unsuccessful private efforts was suggested as an assurance the organizer lived up to their end of the bargain. Other proposed restrictions suggested by staff included no event parking in the towns Peyton Street Parking Lot often utilized by customers of East Main Street and surrounding downtown businesses. Proposed changes to the town ordinance would also re-categorize all parades and processions under the category Special Events. The new chapter shall regulate all large gatherings, parades, processions and races and the permit application process for all these events will go through the town managers office.

Rather than the ascension of email and competition from UPS and Federal Express, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is being threatened by legislation passed during the administration of President George W. Bush that placed an untenable and senseless financial burden on the federal postal service under the guise of accountability, professional and financial responsibility sound familiar? Pay attention, public education could be next. The effort to hamstring and financially cripple the postal service, and increasingly privatize the transport of mail in this country seems to have begun with the 006 Congressional passage of the Postal Accountability Enhancement Act (PAEA). Sounds harmless enough accountability and enhancement, what could be bad? Unfortunately in the age of Orwellian, right-wing, corporate doublespeak where a Clean Air Act actually enables industrial pollution and No Child Left Behind means every childs education is reduced, a lot! The PAEA placed an untenable and unprecedented financial burden on a recently thriving federal postal service. That burden was that USPS fully fund future retirees health benefits for the next 75 years and that mandate would have to be accomplished within a 10-year timeframe. As pointed out in a lengthy exploration of the issue by Allison Kilkenny published on Sept. 8 on the Truthout website, Thats right. Congress was demanding universal health care coverage. GEEZ, why wont they take that stance for the rest of us?!!? The annual cost to USPS has been $5.5 billion a year money taken away from operational and existing infrastructure needs. Vehicle Crashes Into West 11th Street Business

Front Royal police responded to a hit and run accident in which a vehicle ran into a building and then fled the scene on Thursday. At approximately 5:11pm, police were notified that a vehicle had run into the front of TCs Family Grocery, located at 655 West 11th Street. The vehicle, described as a white Chevrolet Tahoe, struck the building to the left of the front entrance, breaking a window and surrounding masonry. The impact also damaged the interior wiring and pushed two refrigerator units forward. No one was injured in the collision. Witnesses provided a partial license plate number and a description of the vehicle to the responding officers, who then began searching the area for the vehicle. An inspector from the Warren County Building Inspections Office responded and determined that the building was structurally safe. Shortly afterwards, the suspected vehicle was located, parked at 343 Kendrick Lane and a driver was identified and questioned about the incident. The driver, a 17-year-old juvenile, stated that when he pulled up to the store, the brakes went out and he hit the building. The juvenile then got scared and drove off. The juvenile has been charged with driving without a license, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident. He is scheduled to appear in the Warren County Juvenile and Domestic Court on October 6, 011 at 1:30pm. The crash was investigated by Officer S. Keller. (From a release)

The 006 PAEA was supposedly designed to improve the organization and to improve the quality of the service and to strengthen the free market for delivery service. New York Metro Area Postal Union Political Director Chuck Zlatkin. Of the 34 post offices the USPS is considering closing in New York City, 17 are in the Bronx. The South Bronx district ranks as the poorest Congressional district in America. Any time a post office is rumored to be closing, its devastating to the neighborhood that its in, Zlatkin told Kilkenny. What happens when we get involved with elected officials and community people to try and keep a post office open, its always the same people who turn out: el-
derly people, disabled people, poor people and small business owners. Theyre the people who are the ones who depend on the postal service [because] they cant really afford or have access to alternatives If the USPS falls, it will be another strike in the class war where poor people are yet again cut off from a service that used to belong to everyone. Yes, I agree the majority of postal workers come from low to middle class white and black families. Part of the reason that elderly and others Mr. Zlatkin cited use the mail is because of the long foundation laid for use of the service. Even though the organization still exists, America let teaching the postal services history and significance slip through the cracks, Briscoe says. Floundering or thriving? But to adjust to changes circumstances Congress must act to free up postal services finances. Mail volume has declined more than 0 percent in the past four years, due in part to the weak economy and the increase in online bill payment, online bill presentment and e-mail. We had to deal with the loss of friends, family, loved ones, and our sense of security. Patriot Day, which fell on a Sunday this year. The ceremony opened with the raising of the flag and the singing of the National Anthem by Michael Williams, director of residential life at R-MA. Grace Alexander (class of 14) and Madeline Chafin 14 then laid a ceremonial wreath at the base of the flag in honor of the local first respondersfiremen, policemen, and EMTs. According to Winchester attorney and SAAA spokesperson Benjamin Butler, three top agency officials, President & CEO Helen Cockrell, Finance Director Jim Shaffer and Director of Development Ann McIntyre have been dismissed by the board of directors. It was a day that sparked a purpose to our nation, and we used that spark to drive ourselves to be better Americans, and to be a better America. When those planes hit the World Trade Center Towers, the hijackers sought not to take human life, although lives they did take, Christoph said, nor to destroy a building, although a building they did destroy. They were after the way of life which those buildings had symbolized. Hardly were they mere murderers or arsonists they wanted to scare us. But we were not scared. Out of our initial despair was borne a new fearlessness. Our way of life did not cease after September 11th. We did not stop building big, we kept at it with renewed fervor. Were not afraid, Christoph stated. We arent cowering in the shadows of our former glory No, we are moving forward as we have always done. So on this day of remembrance, let us mourn the ones we have lost, said Christoph, let us venerate the ones who first answered the call, let us thank the ones who put their lives on the lines, that we might have ours. But let us never forget where we are going, that even in times of sorrow there is always hope for the future. After the student speeches, Warren County Sheriff Danny McEathron, Warren County Fire Chief Richard Mabie, and Front Royal Police Chief Richard Furr each received a flag that was flown over R-MA on September 11, 011, in honor of their respective departments and the sacrifices they make daily to serve and protect others. Major General Henry M. Hobgood, president of R-MA, presented the flags. After a moment of silence, Rabia Otry 13 played Taps from the balcony in the chapel and there was a 1-gun salute. As the cadet corps filed out into the sunshine and proceeded to class, the students words were shown to be true. Thanks to those who sacrificed on 9/11/01 and every day before and since then, we do not live in fear. We are moving forward in unity, with purpose and hopeand with gratitude in our hearts for all those who serve in the military and who are our first responders.

Bear-ly functional Happy Creek Knolls bear invasion

By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report Two people addressed council at its Sept. 1 meeting regarding ongoing problems with bears roaming their Happy Creek Knolls subdivision off Happy Creek Road. This was the second appearance of residents of that Happy CreekShenandoah Shores Roads area asking the town to take a more active roll in protecting them and their families from the threat of wild animals in their neighborhood. All of these citizens have referenced Councilman Tom Sayres sponsorship during their comments to council. Saturday Night Live could make a parody of it, if it wasnt so serious, one man told council. He added that he had been told the bears have been here longer, implying some sort of tenured authority for bear life. The woman speaker added that she had been told by the Warren County Sheriff s Office Animal Control that she could not harm the bear that has been dragging her neighbors garbage through her yard. It seems they are respecting the dignity of the bear over me and my family, she told council. If not more respected, our native bears may be more adaptable than some people who have relocated to a rural community from more metro areas in recent years. And as is often the case with city folk when they migrate to smaller, more remote and lower-taxed areas, it is their will and lifestyle they would have their adopted community adjust to. I mean, it just seems like they are not paying attention to published media accounts or town press releases on the origin of the bearhuman neighborhood interaction problem and how it can be dealt with and ultimately eliminated by affected humans. As has been pointed out during past work sessions by the town manager, there are also state and federal guidelines on how localities can deal with bear populations. Rather than trap and relocate which Town Manager Steve Burke has repeatedly stated publicly is not being done right now due to a preponderance of bears around the commonwealth eliminating the source of the problem the smell and accessibility of food and garbage kept outdoors is the federal, state and locally suggested solution. Bears can smell food for miles, up to 40 or 50 by some accounts. Do not leave pet food or bird feeders outside, the town has repeatedly told people. The town is also offering bear-proof trash containers to impacted residents who must keep their trash outside. One might expect councilmen to offer these suffering and fearful citizens or their neighborhood associations such advice when the problem is initially brought their way by constituents not privy to all the info at their disposal. But alas, the problem and alarm over it just seems to be escalating in some eastside neighborhoods. For some uninformed by their municipal representatives or the media or just unable to cope individually or neighborhood-wide with available solutions, the preference seems to be trap and exterminate no matter who was here first.

Never too old to promote a good idea health and a local swim center
He started preparing and lost weight and qualified, eventually receiving a silver medal at the 010 Virginia Senior Games held in May in Richmond for the 50 meter backstroke. He received a bronze for the 100 meter backstroke there also. The time for the 50m qualified him to participate in the 011 Summer National Senior Games held in Houston, Texas. There he got a ribbon for 7th place in the 50-yard Backstroke Swimming Event for 65 to 69-year old males. It wasnt so much that I got a ribbon, it was that I could do it. Getting prepared for it and meeting new people there made it fun, he said, and added, Im not the best or fastest. There were seven or eight people in all from Virginia in the swimming events, but I was the only one from Front Royal. Probably a lot of people in this county could swim better or faster, but they didnt try. Tim, obviously, is a man who is used to achieving his goals. But his achievements and the resulting fun are not the only things occupying his mind right now. He has a vision and another long-range goal, one which could potentially benefit everyone locally. I do hope another result of my participation in this event would be to bring about community awareness of the need for a year round wellness/ aquatic and recreation center which would be available to residents of Warren County, he said. This would be similar to WARF (Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility) in Warrenton and the Valley Health Wellness and Fitness Center in Winchester, both of which have indoor pools. Tim hopes his efforts can speed up the process that has a 10-0 year projection for constructing that kind of facility here. A long-range plan is outlined in the Phase IV proposal for recreation development in the county-acquired land from Fishnet Ministries. Ten years is a long time to wait for it, its very sad, he said. Tim has run the idea by Warren County Administrator Douglas Stanley, among others. Im very supportive of the concept, said Stanley, and continued, but we have to look at the reality of the situation. WARF cost $3 million to build. Wed need two million a year to have a facility like that. We can see the potential if the population or demand grows, but its a long-range plan for us. That information doesnt keep Tim from wanting to gather school, hospital, town and county officials all in one room to discuss the idea and put all their resources together to make it happen sooner. Michael South, engineer and Warren County resident, who is active in community-related volunteer work, is another supporter of the idea. Thank you for the opportunity to express our thoughts for an Aquatic and Fitness Center for Front Royal-Warren County, he said. This would be beneficial to our community, bringing a facility to address the therapeutic needs of those in recovery and the elderly, a competitive training and competition venue for our athletes and students, as well as the recreational activities for our families, he continued. Tim mentioned that he believed that Dr.Tripp Bradd M.D. would support the project. As a 57-year-old swimmer who competed at Duke University with the AAU and now swims once a year in a seven-and-a-half mile event at the mouth of the Potomac River and in an endurance swim across the Chesapeake Bay, he was enthusiastically supportive. Bottom line, we are the canoe capital of Virginia and a lot of our people dont know how to swim. Swimming lessons are important for children and adults, he said. He reiterated the need for seniors to have non-weight-bearing exercise, but that everyone can use swimming to burn off calories and have fun. He noted that many rural Americans, including those in our county, are not in good physical condition. We are the only county in the Lord Fairfax District that doesnt have swim teams in our schools, he said. We are a rural area that is becoming more like Manassas. We should also have the same kinds of benefits of a larger community, he added. People who can afford it have swimming pools and can travel to other areas to swim. But it would be nice to have more venues that the county pays for, he concluded. Tim is aware of the difficulties. To get a project of this dollar amount off the ground with a big step forward, a strong financial donor is needed. We need someone to donate a million or two to get us going. They can put their name on the building, he said, then asked, Bing Crosby, where are you? This being a reference to the donation from the singer that helped fund the construction of Front Royals baseball stadium years ago. Im all for keeping heritage and historical values, and I know it does take the larger population and money, but we need to plan for the future and to stay current. We still need to stay in touch, said Tim. Serving others is not new for Tim. Since he and his wife Linda moved here in 1997 they have been active in the community. Linda was a reading coach at Ressie Jeffries Elementary School and Tim was the general manager at Jack Evans Chevrolet for 11 years. He was president of the Downtown Business Association for three non-consecutive terms during the years 001-007. He also is an Adjunct professor at Lord Fairfax Community College and is owner of a small business counseling company. The couple has two grown children; a son Brian who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, and a daughter Cheryl who lives in Columbus, South Carolina. His future competition plans include trying to qualify in the 50 and 100 meter backstroke and the 100 meter medley for the 013 National Senior event to be held in Cleveland, Ohio. When I was young, I felt immortal, kind of a Superman feeling, but when I got older, even though my health was good, I gained a sense of mortality, and could see the end. I feel the urgency to do things I didnt have time to do before because I was working. Im hoping every year to set goals to improve myself and keep healthy and have fun, he explained. Tim Frees By Carol Ballard Warren County Report Doctors have told 68-year-old Rockland resident Tim Frees that he has the heart of a 30-year-old. He is convinced that one reason for this is that he stays active by swimming laps and hed like to have public indoor swimming pools available to Warren County residents year-round. Heres an athletic endeavor anyone over 50 can do because very few continue to play football after a certain age, Tim said with a laugh. He said that he swam a lot as a child in Chicago, Il., and later competed in high school and college. The love of swimming stayed with him and he continued to swim laps on a regular basis. In the fall of 009, he happened to see an article about the National Senior Games, an Olympic-style event for adults 50 years and older and checked out the qualifying swim times. I told myself, Gosh, I think I can do that. I was nervous because I hadnt swum in competition in almost 50 years, but I was physically healthy, he said.

Surviving the recession one womans story

She completed an advertised course, got her first job in the new occupational health unit in the summer of 003 at Warren Memorial Hospital, and was off and running in a new direction. Since, she has earned the title Certified Massage Therapist, VA Board of Nursing. While building her clientele and seeing her kids through school -- Celeste earned her undergraduate degree in biology at Duquesne University -- she turned to part time teaching, first in the Warren County education system handling classes of troubled adolescents (possibly a job few others wanted), then at a private Christian school in Stephens City. Between times, she was to offer massage therapy on a more or less ad hoc basis in Winchester and other locations in the Valley before settling in Middletown with a new husband, Powell, and expanding her family to include three step children. This month, she opened her own Strasburg Massage Therapy in a new office block at Stoney Point Way, Strasburg, sort of a dream come true. If offered, would she return to her engineering past? Im not sure, but I must face things as they are. Rebuilding on so many levels was never in my plans. I know that my new work has a positive effect on others and on myself and it was a good move forward. I have a wonderful new husband and a beautiful, expanded family of five hardworking kids (and the spouses of the oldest four): Matthew is now a lawyer; Lyndsay a child care resource specialist; Brandi is a (USAF) home maker; Cody a military careerist in the USAF; and his brother, Kyle, 15, is still in school. I should add that even if one steps into a totally different career field, previous experience matters.My problem solving and business relationship skills have been shaped by my past work. Of the current economic downturn and loss of jobs throughout the area, she says in the darkest times there is light. She says to follow your instincts - and to pray. Shes a survivor of the last economic downturn which, if your memory is good, occurred just after the turn of the century - a decade ago. Celeste was for 0 years a wellsalaried research engineer. She followed her job from Pennsylvania, her home state, to Winchester. Suddenly, in 00, with two kids, her life went off the tracks in a marital split about the time she lost her engineer job due to that years mini-recession. What to do? She shopped her experience around the area, wanting to keep son Matthew and daughter Lyndsay in their respective schools in Winchester - James Wood H.S. and Millbrook. Doors closed in
her face. For years, shed raised her family on the principal of maintaining natural good health-healthy diet, healthy (and in this case, Christian) lifestyle, natural curatives for ailments--and had developed an interest in alternative treatments to maintain a healthy body and mind. Virginia moves toward new storm water regulations

Samuels Library plans for water runoff-friendly garden
By Leslie Fiddler Warren County Report That old chicken shed held and gradually released inches of water said Virginia. Now that its gone and buried the runoff is eroding our lane and washing mulch into the ponds. We can always install culverts but I wonder what else can be done. Well Virginia the times are achanging. Current stormwater management philosophy views excess water as a resource and aims to improve its quality and reduce its quantity before it enters natural waterways. Take a forest, for example. A forest, with multiple layers of vegetation, slows, filters and absorbs water. On the other hand lawns, stones and gravel, bare soil and hard surfaces (like pavement and roofs) encourage run off. Uncontrolled storm water can then pick up pollutants, cause erosion and even expand oxygen-depleted aquatic dead zones. What strategies can be employed to improve and reduce runoff? In September 008 Fairfax County Providence District Supervisors Office, the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and Angler Environmental published Residential Low Impact Landscaping Workshop, a 1 page booklet describing conservation landscaping, low impact development and residential practices such as installing rain barrels, reforesting, filtering, pervious pavement, green rooftops and rain gardens. Rain gardens contain multiple layers of mulch and plants. They intercept water running off streets, driveways, and rooftops; allowing it to filter into the ground while slowing its flow and removing pollutants, thus improving water quality before it reaches streams and regional water supplies. Technical and practical design information is found in Rain Garden Design and Construction: A Northern Virginia Homeowners Guide, published by Fairfax County and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District. Local landscape architect Joe Duggan of J.Duggan and Associates designed an educational rain garden as part of Samuels Library Master Landscape Plan. It awaits installation, pending fundraising. Duggan says that if you look at the library gardens location you will see that water flow and erosion are silting the water inlet. So the water is there! Warren County Tree Steward David Means is also a landscape architect. He cautions that slopes must be stabilized before planting and recommends planning for a 1- storm. Weve had a lot of those lately he observed. According to Duggan the state may mandate new Storm Water Regulations and Chesapeake Bay TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load of Pollutants). He feels that design costs would be much higher with new systems requiring more intricate grading design, etc., to create small pockets of run off but that the construction costs would be a wash same either way. Duggan acknowledges that engineers may disagree as everything is new and everyone is learning. But as for your situation, Virginia, you first must learn why the volume of runoff has increased. Has there been development at your ridge top? Might the buried charred chicken shed timbers be impeding access to a cavern? Installing diversions deals with the symptoms - but what is the cause?

Dear Stewart, Im going to ask a loaded question and know you will come up with an interesting answer. What is the best way to kill a tree? Brian Morton Dear Brian, Yes, I have some very interesting ways to kill a tree. Before I get myself in trouble this is really tongue in cheek and try to read between the lines on this. 1) First and foremost, go ahead and plant your tree too deep or in too small of a hole. Both will do a good job of not allowing the roots to develop properly. Remember to ignore the root flare, where the base of trunk swells out to become roots entering the soil. The root flare should have
been at ground level or just above ground level if you had wanted the tree to live. ) Now apply the tallest mound of mulch around the tree that you can. Make sure it looks like an ant hill or, better yet, a volcano. I have yet to see something like this occurring naturally in the woods, but sure see a whole lot of these piles in residential neighborhoods and at commercial landscaping in the area. Remember the root flare in the first topic; this will surely cover that important root flare. 3) Another option is to forego the mulch entirely. This will allow you to get right up and gouge the tender trunk with your weed eater or lawnmower. Repetition each week works wonders here. 4) Once the tree gets nice and established and is growing very well, providing your house with that nice shade, go ahead and top it back severely. You can use the excuse that it is growing too tall if anybody asks. The neat thing about this is the tree will now grow about eight times quicker each year, so prepare your wallet for continued topping. The light at the end of the tunnel is that eventually the tree will die from continued topping and you can start over at point number one with a new tree. These are some of the things I see each day in Front Royal that result in crippled looking and dead trees. I dare each and every one of you to ignore my instructions above on how to kill a tree and to make a commitment to properly care for your trees. These are valuable assets in your landscape that will pay you back hundredfold in benefits from a bit of proper care from the beginning. Stewart
