Homework for Sultan Mohamed Soukani

Define a network
Networking is very important in the computer world networking shares resources such as CDs speaking on MSN; the network is normally linked through satellites, infrared light beams, telephone lines and exchanging files. Its all about linking 2 computers together to share data they can have different types of OP there is no difference and a mixture of hardware and computer software

Types of network
All the network types that are available are called area network the most common networks are LAN and WAN

The different types of network are:

LAN: local area network WAN: wide area network MAN: metropolitan CAN: campus area network

LAN
A LAN is mostly used in local areas, thats why its called local area network, such as college home or building, it is used one in a room one LAN. LANs are normally owned and controlled by a single person or organization, such as VIRGIN media. They use different connectivity technology such as Ethernet and token ring.

WAN
The WAN wide area network is the largest WAN across in the world. The WAN is dispersed (spread over a wide area) a collections of LANs a device that is called a router connects LANS to WAN. The router in the IP networking keeps up both the LAN address and a WAN address. The WAN is different in lots of important ways. They are not owned by organizations but they exist under collective ownership and management. The WAN use technologies like ATM, Frame relay.

MAN
The metropolitan area network (MAN) is a larger version of LAN and it uses the same technology as the LAN, it covers towns, cities big companies. It supports data and voice it has not more than 2 cables and it does not include switching elements.

CAN
The campus area network is mostly used in campuses such as schools or military base

LAN architecture
LAN architecture can be connected in 4 LAN TOPOLOGIES, which are tree, bus, star and ring

The star topology

is connected in a cable or wireless to a main point such as a hub or a switch the computers connected to each other are placed like a star. The star topology protocol is used or IEEE 802.3

Advantages of a Star Topology

Easy to install Easy to connect and remove devices No disruptions

Disadvantages of a Star Topology

Needs more cable length (less needed in a linear topology) If hub switch fails, nodes that are attached will be disabled Expensive ( it requires more hubs than any other topology)

The bus topology

the nodes are connected in by one linear cable (the shared medium) each nod sees the same as the others that are connected by the LAN. At the end of the terminator is a terminator that takes up any signal and prevents it from entering the bus. This LAN uses the protocol IEEE 802.3

Advantages of a Linear Bus Topology

Easy to connect Less cable requirement than a star topology

Disadvantages of a Linear Bus Topology

If something goes wrong the whole network shuts down Terminators required on both ends Hard to understand if the network shuts down Hard to use in a large building.

The ring topology

is connected in a circle and the NIC the thing about the ring topology is that it has no starting point or ending point the nods repeat THEMSELVES The ring topology uses the IEEE 802.5 PROTOCOL

Advantages of Ring topology No central server is requirement for the management of this topology If one node fails the entire network fails Disadvantages of ring topology If one change is made to the network it will affect the whole performance of the network

The tree topology:

It is similar to the bus topology but it has no closed rings. The tree topology starts with a head end where multiple cable start and each of these may have branches. The tree topology can be quite with difficult layout.

Advantages of a Tree Topology

Point to point wiring for single segments Supported by hardware and software venders

Disadvantages of a Tree Topology

Overall length of each segment is limited by the type of cabling used If backbone breaks the whole segment goes down Hard to understand and wire.

Network operation system

This OP is a operation system that can be used by multiple computers across a network. It acts like a movie; the director is there to make the movie run smoothly, now in this case the network operation system helps to keep the network run correctly. There are two main types of NOS The client server and the peer to peer. The peer to peer network lets users share stuff and files that are on their computers The peer to peer network are all considered the same, they have the same abilities. They are designed for small area network.

Advantages of a peer-to-peer network:

Less expense Setup

Disadvantages of a peer-to-peer network:

No central repository for files and applications Security (not available)
