1 Title: New Chinks Emerge in Malaria's Armor Source: Health News Date: March 2010 a.2 Journal: Health News ??? a.3 This is all about new discoveries in mosquitoes and parasites causing one of the major causes of death in the whole world. Researches in Paris found out that mosquitoes leave receptors in the skin of human beings which enable those insects to home in on human sweat. The researchers are now finding compounds which could interact with these receptors, and later on, using these to trap or lure these insects. Another research found out that as the Anopheles mosquito drinks blood from the human, it leaves a parasite in its saliva which homes in the liver and later on, swims through the bloodstream and infecting rhombocytes and other blood cells. This will cause to a fever that can lead to a coma or death. This parasite dispatches hundreds of effector proteins into the cytoplasm, modifying the cell and masking the invader from the immune system. One of the primers or exporters of these effector proteins is an enzyme called Plasmepsin v. therefore, the researchers are finding a way to block this root cause of Malaria in order for the parasite to die. With these researches, it is hoped that Malaria deaths would decrease with a faster rate than it kills.

a.1 Title: Monkey Malaria Strain can be Fatal in Humans Source: Health News Date: October 2009 a.2 Health News a.3 The article stressed that Malaria strains in monkeys can infect and kill humans. This strain is called P. knowlesi which is similar to P. malariae (usually benign strain). This parasite is said to reproduce every 24 hours which can be potentially fatal. Most of the Malaria patients in Malaysia had been found out containing this strain. The researchers then studied the most common feature of this disease. Using molecular detection methods, the team found out that P. knowlesi was the most common form of malaria, accounting for more than two-thirds of the cases. Its fatality rate is just below two percent, making it as deadly as the P. falcuparum strain (considered as the most dangerous form of Malaria). But the researches stressed that the accuracy of the percentage is doubtful because of the relatively small number of cases studied so far. Further, it was then recommended that clinicians assessing a patient with malaria should be aware of the diagnosis, clinical manifestations, and rapid and potentially serious cases of P. knowlesi malaria.

a.1Million to Get Malaria Help by 2010 Source: Health News Date: March 2009 a.2 Health News a.3 Good news for residents living in Davos, Switzerland for a $ 100-million campaign on preventing Malaria through distributing mosquito nets and anti-malaria kits that had been put up by Standard Chartered Bank, ExxonMobil and News Corporation. This campaign aims to halt about one million malaria deaths a year. The companies launched this campaign in a fund-raising activity. With the economic condition they are currently facing, these companies are urging the donors not to ditch this campaign because there is a real chance that the malaria epidemic could be eliminated in the coming years.

Page 3 a.1 Introduction Malaria is an infectious caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which infects red blood cell and it is transmitted to human by female Anopheles mosquito. Where the common species are Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium Knowlesi, Plasmodium vivax and the last one is Plasmodium malariae. Signs and Symptoms 1.Flulike illness with fever, chills, muscle aches, and headache Hallmark of benign form of malaria. 2.Bleeding problems, shock, liver or kidney failure, CNS problems, coma, and can die from the infection or its complication. Produces persistent high fever, orthostatic hypotension and RBC sludging that leads to capillary obstruction on various site. a.Cerebral malaria b.Pulmonary c.Splanchic: Blackwater fever: a complication of P. falciparum, massive intravascular hemolysis causes jaundice, hemoglobinuria, tender and enlarge spleen, ARF and uremia. Yellowing of the skin (jaundice) and whites of the eyes due to destruction of red blood cells and liver cells. a.2 Reaction For many years now. Malaria has killed millions and millions of innocent lives all over the globe. Many studies had been made, many medicines created, many preventions and treatments discovered because of this one fatal disease that could wipe out the population. Malaria is a threat to mankind, knowing the fact that this disease does not remain stable for new strains are appearing every now and then. New strains which are deadlier than those known. Therefore these new strains need to be analyzed and studied carefully for it to be prevented and cured.

A new brink in the world of Malaria was again found out by the researchers in Paris. They had discovered the root cause or the main parasite in the disease Malaria. For me, that is already striking at the main enemy or target. With that, more effective and efficient treatment and prevention could be generated and so, lessening Malaria cases. On the other part of the world, a new strain of Malaria emerged in Malaysia, which is the P. knowlesi, a strain coming from monkeys. This has been discovered as next to the most fatal strain of Malaria. The team of researchers have studied this strain so that there is better understanding for this. It is quite frightening to know that there are other kinds of strains (maybe more fatal than the one's discovered) that are hidden somewhere in the society ready to come out and infect people. But then, experts will always be ready to study and find cures to those strains. Through studies made by researchers, P. knowlesi is again understood and carefully observed so the manufacturing of medicines and treatments are already on-going. Shifting to South East Asia, big companies had come together to conduct a fund-raising campaign for Malaria prevention all over the globe. This campaign is said to distribute mosquito nets and anti-malaria kits to people all over the globe especially in the areas where the disease is very rampant. The campaign's objective is to decrease Malaria cases and deaths to 1 million per year. It is so good to know that even large businesses are making their move to getting rid of this disease. And with that, the society as a whole is now getting involved with the fight against this disease. Malaria is getting worse, but we, the people, are one in hand in stopping this disease.
