INDIA - Internet Usage

Internet Subscriber Growth Although, the growth shows a healthy 20% increase from September 2008 to September 2009- from 57 million users to 71 million Internet users. To put things in perspective, we are adding close to 15 million mobile users on average in a month, while in case of Internet it is 14 million users a year. Overall, 71 million users accessed Internet in year 2009, with 52 Million active users who accessed it atleast once in a month. *Source - IAMAI and IMRB

According to NCAERs finding of its 2009 National readership survey Internet is the 2nd most engaging medium. The surveywith a sample of over 3,11,431 literate youth (1,02,021 rural and 2,09,410 urban) covering 432 villages in 207 districts as rural and 753 urban blocks in 199 towns as urban Time Spent (Engagement): Television 97 minutes. Internet is the second most engaging medium in India with time spent of 70 minutes. 2/3 rd of the people accessing internet accessed it from cyber cafes and workplaces.

Facebook

While Facebook has been growing slowly and steadily in India for the last couple of years, Facebook exploded in May and June 2009, doubling from 1.6 million to 3.2 million monthly active users in the country. In May 2009 Facebook users in India were greeted with a new message upon logging in: Facebook is now available in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Twitter

Mumbai ranks 31 out of top 50 tweeting world cities. India is in the top 5 countries by sheer number of twitter users, behind US, UK, Canada and Australia. But way ahead of China and Other countries.

The rising popularity of Twitter is being driven by Bollywood, with many movie stars embracing Twitter as a new way of reaching their fans. The most active celebrities include Gul Panag, Priyanka Chopra, Karan Johar and Mallika Sherawat. Indias biggest star, Shahrukh Khan, has more than 200,000 followers. Shashi Tharoor also has a huge fan following of about 600,000 followers. And while Twitter has become a big tool for movie marketing, politicians, media personalities and even companies are also using it to great effect. In October last year (2009) it struck a partnership with Bharti Airtel, the largest mobile operator in India, which has 110 million subscribers. The telcos subscribers can now send tweets at standard rates and receive tweets for free.
