Exceeding Standards
Thesis is clearly stated; we know what the subject is and what the paper is about; thesis does not state the obvious; thesis is interesting and displays critical thinking; thesis is specific.

Meeting Standards
Thesis shows some signs of critical thinking (somewhat obvious); thesis needs to be more specific; we are somewhat vague on the purpose of this essay and the true subject of the essay.

Does Not Meet Standards


Thesis only states the obvious; no sign of critical thinking; thesis statement is too general; we don't know what the real subject is or the purpose of the essay.

Introductory Paragraph

Exceeding Standards
Introduction is interesting and clearly states the subject of the essay and the purpose.

Meeting Standards
Introduction needs to be more interesting; subject clearly stated but the purpose of the essay is somewhat vague.

Does Not Meet Standards


Introduction is boring; the subject and the purpose of the essay is nonexistent.

Supporting Details

Exceeding Standards
Essay includes 3 or more supporting details that are specific to the subject; details are excellent and logical; details support thesis statement;

Meeting Standards
Essay includes 3 or more details but they are general in nature; some of the details do not clearly support the thesis statement.

Does Not Meet Standards


Essay includes less than 3 details; most of the details do not support the thesis statement.

Topic Sentences Topic sentences introduce main details in essay that support the thesis statement.

Exceeding Standards
Each paragraph has a well defined topic sentence that introduces the main detail (3+) in the paragraph; the rest of the sentences in the paragraph support the topic sentence with detail.

Meeting Standards
Not all of the paragraphs had topic sentences; some topic sentences were too general; some of the topic sentences did not relate to the main detail that was discussed in the paragraph.

Does Not Meet Standards


There were few topic sentences; the topic sentences for the supporting paragraphs did not relate back to the the main detail that was discussed in the paragraph.

Transitions

Exceeding Standards
Through transitional words, the flow of the essay is above average; proper use of transitional words from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph is used.

Meeting Standards
Some transitional words are used; a better choice of transitional words could have been used in some parts of the essay.

Does Not Meet Standards


No transitional words were used; the essay was choppy.

Concluding Paragraph

Exceeding Standards
The conclusion clearly summarized and restated the thesis sentence; the supporting ideas were also summarized; the essay ended by finalizing the content of what the writer wished to say.

Meeting Standards
There was a conclusion but the summary was vague; All Key points, details, were not summarized.

Does Not Meet Standards


The conclusion did not relate back to the thesis statement; the writer went off focus from the main subject and purpose of the essay.
