S.5 CHEMISTRY
TIME: 2:30 HOURS

Attempt five questions in all, three from section A and two from section B

1. A compound x containing only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen was

subjected to combustion. On combustion, the compound gave 0.228g of
CO2 and 0.0931g of water vapour. Calculate the empirical formula of the
compound if the original mass was 0.1g

X(g)+ 02(g) CO2(g) + H20(g)

2. 4g of an organic compound y containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen

only on complete combustion, produced 6g of C02 and 1.64g of water.
(a) Calculate the simplest formular of y
(b) If the vapour density of y is 88, what is the molecular formula of y?

3. On complete combustion of 12.0g of a hydrocarbon Z an organic

compound of hydrogen and carbon whose relative molecular mass is 70,
377.1g of CO2 and 154.4g of water vapour were evolved.

(i) Calculate the simplest formular for Z

(ii) Molecular formula for Z.

4. Define the following terms used in organic chemistry giving examples.

(i) Functional group
(ii) Homologous series
(iii) Electrophyse
(iv) Nucleophyle

(b) What do you understand by hemolytic fission?

5. A volume of a gas, 265cm3 is collected at 70oC and 1.05 x 105 Nm-2 what
volume would the gas occupy at s.t.p?

6. A certain mass of an ideal gas has a volume of 3.25dm3 at 25oc and 1.01 x
105Nm-2. What pressure is required to compress it to 1.88dm3 at the same
temperature?

7. A gas, A, diffuses through a porous plug at a rate of 1.43cm3 s-1 Carbon

dioxide diffuses through the plug at a rate of 0.43cm3s-1. Calculate the
molar mass of A.
8. A certain volume of hydrogen takes 2 minutes and 10 seconds to diffuse
through a porous plug, and an oxide of Nitrogen takes 10 minutes and 23
seconds. What is
(a) the molar mass of the of the oxide of Nitrogen
(b) The formula of the oxide of Nitrogen

9. The rate of diffusion of methane gas (CH4) is 2.0 time that of gas x. e the
relative molecular mass of gas X

10. Explain the following

(a) The melting point of 4-nitrophenol is higher than that of 2-
nitrophenol
(b) The molecular mass of ethanoic acid is (120) twice as large as
expected when dissolved in benzene.
(c) Alcohols, carboxylic acid and amines can dissolve in water

11. Define Ionization energy.

(b) Explain how the following factors would affect ionization energy.
(i) Shielding effect
(ii) the net charge on an atom, the size of an atom

(c) What do you understand by the following?

(i) Electron affinity

(ii) Electronegativity

(d) Describe the trend of atomic radius across the periodic table.

12. The atomic number of element A is 33

(a) Write the electronic configuration of A

(b) Write the formula of the oxide of A

(c) State whether the oxide of A you have give in (b) is acidic, neutral,
or amphoteric. Write an equation to illustrate your answer.
