you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

ART I: Foundations of Studio Art Instructor: Sarah Manger sarah_manger@hcpss.org 2011-2012

Welcome to Art I - Im happy you chose this

class to fulfill your Fine Arts elective for graduation! I realize that there are lots of different reasons why youre all heremaybe youve always considered yourself a creative person and just want to explore that a little more. On the other hand, some of you may not consider yourself artists at all, but no matter what your ability levelknow that I am here to help ALL of you grow from understanding the most basic drawing principles, to gaining greater confidence in your abilities and deepening your artistic awareness.

There are 4 main areas of art that we will be learning about during art class this year:

For this to work, it is essential you know that ART IS A SKILL that can be learned like any other. The trick is just a matter of engaging the right side of your brain, the side thats good at visualizing and processing the whole picture. Basically, youll learn how to not just look, but really SEEand think like an artist.

1 Art Production exploring and using a variety of art materials and techniques to create. 2 Art History looking at the role of artistic expression throughout the world and over time. 3 Art Criticism describing, analyzing, interpreting, and judging art. 4 Aesthetics addressing philosophical questions associated with seeing and perceiving art. And heres a very general idea of what were going to be doing: 1st semester Elements of Art: line, texture, value, shape, form, space, color Principles of Design Concentration in dry media Craftsmanship/Composition Aesthetic Theories 2nd semester Portraits Feldman Method Concentration in mixed media Painting Printmaking Sculpture

Youll be covering these broad topics by solving a variety of creative problems, all the while expanding and improving your technical skills.

Rules in the Art Studio: 1. Sit in your assigned seat. 2. Respect others space. 3. No cursing or teasing. 4. Quiet while others are teaching. 5. No talking during observational drawing.

*Adherence to the school-wide Student Handbook policies is expected at all times. If you choose to break any of the above rules, then you have chosen to accept the consequences as outlined on Howard High Schools Discipline Ladder posted just inside the studio door. OO policy means OFF and OUT-OF-SIGHT phones or headphones are absolutely forbidden at Howard- it is school policy that if you are seen with either youve requested an immediate office referral. FOOD AND DRINK POLICY: nothing but water in a CLEAR container is allowed in the art room. Class Routine: This is the way the art studio runs to help everyone think and work like artists while also
keeping the art studio running most efficiently and effectively.

1 Drill When? As soon as you enter the class Why? To center you and focus your creative energy...let your left brain take a break while your right brain steps up. .

2 Introduction/Demo When? After the warm-up Why? To teach you a new skill or technique or to explain a concept that you will be responsible for knowing. It is crucial that I have 100% of your attention during this portion of the class. It is my job to make certain that you are learning and understanding the information I am giving you.

3 Studio Time When? Structured class time Why? Use this time to work on the days objectives for the class, develop skills learned during the demonstration, look at and talk about related artists and artworks for inspiration, and receive feedback on work-in-progress. 4 Critiques When? In-progress and at the conclusion of a unit Why? Critiques help cultivate an art studio culture of cooperation and support while also helping everyone involved think and express feelings as artists. Good critiques can serve as springboards for completing or creating more effective work. 5 Clean- Up When? 5-10 minutes prior to the end of class Why? It is essential that we all cooperate to keep the art studio in clean, working condition so that everyone can use the space most effectively. Specifics will be given depending upon the project and materials we are using.

6 Closure When? After clean- up, before the bell Please dont go all Pavlov on me when you hear a bellI will dismiss you from your seats once the room is satisfactorily clean and a closure activity has been performed as a review of the days objectives.

Tardies & Attendance

Be in the room and ready to learn when the bell rings. What to expect if you slip-up:

*If you are Sick or Out of Class for any reason, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and make it up. That means you must ask a classmate what you missed or initiate a conversation with me.

*Assignments will not be accepted late without an excused absence, in which case, you will have the same amount of time you were absent to make up the work (outside of class).

*Extensions on a FINAL assignment will be given at my discretion and only to those students who work diligently in class and cannot finish or work meticulouslynot to those who waste studio time.

* Do-Over Not happy with the job you did on a FINAL assignment the first time around? You can submit 1 re-do per quarter.

SUPPLIES What stuff should I have for class?

three-ring binder pockets are great, but not necessary Pencils - #2 pencils are fine. If you would like your own drawing pencils, look for one hard and one soft (H/B). White Vinyl Eraser these are excellent for cleanly erasing graphite. Look for these brand names Magic Rub, Staedtler, Sakura, Mars, or Prang.
* You should be able to find these supplies at any art or big chain store.
