deal with deeper issues
 They involve so much more
 Case 42
o Concerned about sexual performance
o BP normal
o Enlarged prostate seems to dampen effect of erection
o Experiences decrease in sexual performance
o Suggested comparison with Case 8
o Age:
 Men as they age have less sexual energy
 Libido is reduced
 Ability to have intercourse, and maintain erection – tire more
quickly
 Decrease in KI essence
 Have to ration their use of that energy, so that when they want to
have intercourse, will have saved up enough energy to do so
o In case 8 – simply getting old
o Image – wants to appear as if he’s still 20 years old
o Used a lot of Yang tonics

o It’s impeding the flow of blood and the elasticity of the blood vessels
o It’s difficult for him to gain an erection and then sustain it
o Approach is to use a herb that is in the Virilia complex
o Treating the cuases
 Pigium Africana
• Used principally for prostate problems, but it also lowers
cholesterol levels in the prostate
• It helps improve circulation
 Serenoa repens
• His prostate is probably enlarged
 Gingko Biliboa
 Allium sativum
o Had healthy happy sexual life with his wife
 Case 44
o Smilax officinalis
 Person needed to be kept in a very warm room for several weeks
 Needed to have abstained from certain foods and alcohol – very
clean diet
 Most of these cases had very favourable outcomes
 Far better than dying of syphilis!!!!
 Case 45
o PSA regarded as an important test
o Elevated PSA levels
 Biopsy the prostate
• Use 6 to 8 needles
 Vitually every man has potentially cancerous cells in prostate from
age of 25
 Inflammation as a result of the biopsy can increase the chances of
cancer
 The PSA levels are highly unreliable
o A lot of systems of BPH

 Urgency, frequency, difficulty commencing and completing
urination

 Successful in men who have severe problems with their prostate –
not cancer but BPH

Exam
 Overall everyone did about the same as last year
 6 questions that most people got wrong. Fell into two categories
o Constituents
o Herbs that had more than one action
 Tabebuia avellanedae
o Essential oils
o Polysaccharides and glycosides
o Quinone
o Alkaloids
 Panax Notoginseng
o Hemostatic – improves blood circulation
 Berberis family
o All are oxytocin
o Cause uterine contraction
o Therefore contraindicated
Endocrine
 Plants that control blood sugar levels
 And normalize thyroid levels
 Don’t know any that effect parathyroid
 Amazing that we have herbs that specifically target endocrine function
 Number of herbs used in the treatment of DM is huge
o Constituents come from every conceivable one
o Botanical world has so many ways to influence endocrine function in a
positive way
 Many classes of herbs that can help
 Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
o Herbs that are treating the symptoms
o Modifying either the metabolism of sugar or the functioning of insulin
o Sugar diabetes
o 2 kinds
 Diabetes type 1
• Childhood onset diabetes
• Not always childhood, but characterized as autoimmune
dysfunction of base cells of pancreas so that insulin is no
longer produced
• May occur later in life as well
• Total cessation in the production of insulin
 Diabetes Type 2
• Adult onset
• Usual mechanism is exhaustion of pancreatic cells b/c of a
overstimulation from the consumption of sugar or CHO
that break down to sugar
• Happens more in type O blood
o If programmed not to digest complex CHO, and
eats a lot of CHO, becomes addicted – they gain
weight (become obese) and develop insulin
resistance
o Develop insulin resistance to high sugar levels
o if not able to utilize them – blood sugar levels high,
therefore insulin is high
o hyperinsulinemia – eventually lead to insulin
resistance
 cells no longer respond to the insulin so
blood sugar levels go higher even in the
presence of normal insulin
o Noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NDDM)
o Also seen in children
o True addiction to CHO, which is easily broken if
you can discipline the child
 Can loose in 2 mo
• Kind of diabetes that were cured by Father Kneipp
 Some herbs are hypoglycemic – lower blood sugar levels
 What is it that does damage in DM? Unfortunate sequelae:
• Diabetic neuropathy
o Due to high blood sugar levels
o Need to have a level between 3 to 5
• Get high insulin levels that follow
• Within cells of body, have intracellular organs –
eicosanoids
o Include inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cells
o Hyperglycemic Inflammatory components that
predominate
o Target nervous system
o Get degeneration to limbs, eyes, nerves, brain…
o Eventually die
o Terrible neuropathy associated with it
 Herbs effect
 some work by altering the absorption of simple sugars from the
digestive tract
 some modify the way in which LIV metabolizes sugar, so that it
gets the sugar out of the blood stream and into glycogen very
quickly
 can alter gluconeogenesis
 Hyperglycemic
• Momordica charantia (Bitter Mellon)
• Syzgium cumini (Jambul)
• Fenugreek used with it
• Vaccinium mytrtilus (bilberry)
o Also good in treatment of vascular disorders that
develop
 Circulation
• Ginger
• Capsicum
• Allium Sativum
 Trying to restore blood flow
• Bilberry
• Gingko biloba (vasodilator)
• Hypericum perforatum
o Helpful in retina of eye for macular degeneration
and other neurological symptoms that occur in DM
and for neuritis
 Pterocarpus
• Kino
• Herb from leguinocea (Sp?) Fabaciea
• Regeneration of damaged beta cells in the pancreas
 Burma Cutch
 Jamneena silvestris
• Bitter and resonance compounds
• May protect beta cells
 Thyroid
o Control of thyroid function is many tiered
o Have ant. Pit hormone making hormone
o Responds to circulating levels of T3 and T4 – especially T3
o If T3 falling, pit. Makes more TSH which tells thyroid to make more
thyroxin
o If have goiter
 Thyroid glad begun to swell
 Not enough iodine
 If suspect peron’s not getting enough iodine, useful source is salt
 Can use kelp seaweed
 Iodine
• May think that person is hyperthyroidism (too much T3 in
blood stream)
• Dose of iodine is used to treat thyroid storm – acute attack
of hyperthyroidism
• Dose of iodine given the right way, will start a thyroid
storm
• A lot we don’t understand about how iodine works
• Good products in market that combine kelp
o Hyperthyroidism
 Too much thyroid hormone with accelerated metabolic rate
 Weight loss
 Sense of heat, tremors
 Reversible condition
 Propothyroid
 Make the conversion of T4 to T3 slower (T3 is active)
 Interfere with conversion to T4
 Three herbs important for this, but not on list
• Lemon balm
• Mother wart
• Bugle weed
o All thyroid conditions are immune in nature
