ItiswellknownthatoneofthemostpopularreasonsfordisbeliefinourMessengerandthe numerousbeforehimwasanadherencetoonesancestrallegacy.Byacceptingamessengers claim,onewouldhavetoacknowledgethattheheritagethathadbeenasourceofprideandidentity isnowreducedtoahistoryofmisguidance,ignoranceandalegacyoffalsebeliefsandpractices.It isnotaneasythingtoaccept,muchlesstodeclareforanyone.Incidentally,wehaveitmucheasier nowthanthecontemporariesofanyprophetastheyhadtotakeonemanswordovertheirentire tribe,community,leadershipandoverandaboveall,theirownfamilylegacy.TheQurancaptures thethoughtprocessofthosewhofollowtheirfamilysreligious,social&ethicallegacyintwovery similarayaat. Ashallowreadingoftheayaatyieldstheconclusionthattheyaresayingprettymuchthesame thing.Whencomparingthetwoayaat,youwillnothaveanytroublepickingoutthesimilaritiesbut youwillalsonoticesomesubtledifferences.Thesedifferencescarrywithinthemlessonsofgreat significance.Sothepointofthisarticleisthat,eventhoughthetwoayaataresayingverysimilar things,theyarenotsayingthesamething.Theoversimplifiedtranslationofferedthroughoutthis articleismyown. In2:170,thecalltocomplyandfollowrevelationhasbeenmade.Ithasbeendeniedbythepeople withtheresponsethattheywillremaincommittedtotheirancestralpracticeswhich(a)theysaw theirownelderspracticingandthereforeissomethingtheyareusedtoandhavebeenconditioned intoand(b)hasbeenapartoftheirtraditionforgenerationsandsoleavingthosepracticesisa questionofabandoningallegianceandloyaltytotheirownpeople.


d. They(theirfathers)didntunderstandathing

Theayah,nearitsconclusionmakesacriticismnotofthepeoplethatarerejectingthemessage,but oftheirfatherswhoarebeingpresentedasanexcuse(likeashieldtohidebehind).Thecriticism statesthattheydidntunderstandusingtheverb.Beforewediscussthewordandits connotations,afewinterestingobservationsarewarranted.(a)Whatisitthattheirfathersdidnt understand?Theanswerismultifaceted.Attheveryleasttheydidntunderstandthetruthaboutthe purposeoflife.Evenclosertohome,theydidntunderstandtherationalebehindtheirownreligious beliefsandlifestyles.Theyhadnojustificationfortheirpractices.Thisisimportantbecauseitcuts attherootofthedisbelieversargument.Insteadoftellingthedisbelieverthatfollowingyour forefathersisntagoodenoughreason(whichcouldhavebeensubjecttodebate),theQuranuproots theirargumentbystatingthattheirfathershadnojustifiablereasonsfordoingwhattheydidtobegin with,andsohowcanthey! Putthisstatementinperspective.FirstthecallismadetofollowwhatAllahhassentdown.Then theyrespondbysayingthattheywillfollowwhattheyfoundtheirforefatherspracticing.ThenAllah respondstotheirresponsesayingthattheirforefathersdidntunderstandathing.Thecentraltheme isfollowing.Thefollowerplaceshistrustintheleader.WiththiscriticismAllahhasexposedthe

leaderslackofqualificationsforleadership. Thereisadirectconnectiondrawnin2:170betweenfollowing(&)understanding(.)Simply put,youhavetounderstandwhyyoufollowapersonoranidea.


Finallyforthisayah,letuslookatthewordwhichcomesfromtheArabicword.The wasusedbyancientArabstotietheircamels.Itistheropetheyusedtowraparoundtheir heads,thentakeitoffandconfinetheircamelstoposts.TheexpressioninArabic, thewomantiedherhairmakestheconnotationveryclear.Thewordisusedfor understandingtoillustratethatunderstandingonlytakesplaceafterrestraint.Onehastorestrain theiremotionsandbiasesbeforeunderstandingsomething.Understandingorclearthinkingcan thereforebeunattainableifoneistooemotional(toosad,tooangry,toohappy,tooscaredetc.).We canalltestifytothisaswecantthinkstraight,sotospeak,whenweareemotionallyfiredup, regardlessofthenatureoftheemotion.Theabilitytoreason,thinkandunderstandareallfunctions thatdemandemotionalrestraint.Becauseoftheunwaveringnatureofclearreason,anotherwordfor soundintellectusedbytheArabsiswhichisliterallyarock.

Bysaying,Allahclearlyexposesthemotivesbehindthepracticesoftheirforefathers. Theywerenotbasedonreason,ratheronwhim,desireandemotion.Bycontrast,whatisimpliedis thatwhatAllahhassentdownshouldbefollowedbecauseitisnotbasedinemptywhimsor emotions.Hence Andhedoesntspeakbasedonvaindesireatall!(53:3)


ALookat5:104ByComparison a.Somethingsabouttheword comeon! AinLWmeanselevationorheight.Thecommandtenseusedisnttypicallyconjugatedin Arabicidiominthepastorregularpresenttense.Itisusedtocallsomeonetoahigherpurposeor task.Itdenotesthatthepersonisbeingcalledtosomethingthatishigherinitsmoralvalueand importancethanwhateverheisuptowhencalled.ThewordusedinancientArabictosimplycall someoneoveris whichdoesnthavesuchimplicationsofpriorityorrisingtotheoccasion. Henceitisusedbythehypocriteswhencallingtheircowardlyassociatesbacktowardsthemselves insurahAlAhzab.(33:18).Itisusedinacondescendingtonetocalloutthosewhohavethe audacitytodeclarewhatAllahhasforbiddenincontradictiontotherevelation(6:150). hasbeenusedtocallpeopletorevelation,truth,themessengerandavarietyofnobletasksin ayaat3:61,3:64,3:167,4:61,5:104,6:151,5:63.Thecasein6:151isparticularlyinterestingasit contrastsin6:150mentionedabove.

Intheayahunderdiscussion,5:104,theimperativeoccurswiththeadditionofthepreposition whichcreatesanidiomaticconnotationinadditiontotheliteral.Theyarebeingtoldtocometowhat Allahhassentandtothemessengergivingthemeaningsof(a)cometotheminsubmissionand moreso(b)cometothemi.e.considerthem:ConsiderwhatAllahhassentdownandconsiderthe messenger.Thisconnotationisveryimportanttounderstandaswewillsee. Whenconsideringaclaim,youhavetotakeintoaccounttheclaimandtheclaimant.Ifsomeoneis makingyouagreatsalespitchbuttheircharacterappearsshadytoyou,thepitchalonewontcut it.Whenyouhaveareliablepersonaskingyoutoconsidersomethingbutthatwhichtheyareasking youtoconsiderisquestionable,youllbereluctanttoacceptandunderstandablyso.Thepeopleare beingaskedtoconsidertheclaimsinwhatAllahhassentdownandthentakeintoconsiderationthe onepresentingtheseclaimsonbehalfofAllah,i.e.,themessenger.Now,perhaps,wecanbetter appreciatewhythemessengerwasmentionedhereexplicitlyandwasreferredtoin2:170implicitly. Also,thepeoplearebeingaskedtoconsidertherevelationandthemessengerbyuseoftheword whichpaintsabeautifulimageforus.Thepeoplearebeingaskedtocomeoutoftheirlowly waystothehigher,superiorandnoblerwayoflifethewayoftherevelationandthemessenger!
b. Whatwefoundourforefatherscommittedtoisenoughforus!

Theresponseofthedisbelieversdiffersherefromthatof2:170.Theywerebeingaskedtofollowin 2:170andtheyrefused,declaringtheirancestralpracticesasworthyofbeingfollowedinstead.In 5:104theywereaskedtoconsidersomething.Thisimpliesthattheyhaventreallygivenitany thoughtnordotheyhaveanyrealknowledgeofwhatitistheyarebeingaskedtoconsider.Their responseconfirmsthisastheysayinfullconfidencethattheirancientwaysareenoughforthem.In otherwords,theydontseetheproblemintheirtraditionallifestylepasseddownforgenerationsso theydontevenneedtoknowaboutorconsideranalternative.IamremindedofaJahovaswitness whocametooffermeapamphletandItoldhimIdtakeitifhetooksomethingfromme.He

Trulyincredible!Becausethegroupbeingspokentorefusedtoconsidernewknowledgehiding behindthecomfortzoneofancestraltradition,Allahspeakstothemintermsofknowledge.You peopleneedknowledgebecausewhatyouarefollowing,infact,isbasedonignorancefromthevery start(fromthetimeofyourancestors)!Theusetheydidntknowathinginsteadoftheydidnt understandathingisincrediblypreciseasitismostappropriatelysuitedfortheprecedingspeech.
