ItiswellknownthatoneofthemostpopularreasonsfordisbeliefinourMessengerandthe numerousbeforehimwasanadherencetoonesancestrallegacy.Byacceptingamessengers claim,onewouldhavetoacknowledgethattheheritagethathadbeenasourceofprideandidentity isnowreducedtoahistoryofmisguidance,ignoranceandalegacyoffalsebeliefsandpractices.It isnotaneasythingtoaccept,muchlesstodeclareforanyone.Incidentally,wehaveitmucheasier nowthanthecontemporariesofanyprophetastheyhadtotakeonemanswordovertheirentire tribe,community,leadershipandoverandaboveall,theirownfamilylegacy.TheQurancaptures thethoughtprocessofthosewhofollowtheirfamilysreligious,socialðicallegacyintwovery similarayaat. Ashallowreadingoftheayaatyieldstheconclusionthattheyaresayingprettymuchthesame thing.Whencomparingthetwoayaat,youwillnothaveanytroublepickingoutthesimilaritiesbut youwillalsonoticesomesubtledifferences.Thesedifferencescarrywithinthemlessonsofgreat significance.Sothepointofthisarticleisthat,eventhoughthetwoayaataresayingverysimilar things,theyarenotsayingthesamething.Theoversimplifiedtranslationofferedthroughoutthis articleismyown. MostwordsinArabichaveawholestorybehindthemwhichmaybeimportanttodiscussatcertain occasionsthroughoutthiswritebutintheendIllhavetopickasingleEnglishwordintheinterestof conciseness.Letuslookatthetwoayaatinquestion:

Theuseofthepassiveopensupthescopeofthisstatement.Allahdidntmentiontheonemaking thestatement.Thereforethisstatementcancorrectlybeappliedtotheprophet,previous prophetsindialoguewiththeirnationsandanycallerstoIslamotherthantheprophets.Theayahis thereforelayingdownauniversalobservationaboutthisparticularscenario.Thepeopleinquestion arebeingtoldtofollowinawaythatispreciseandinwhichthereisnoroomforveeringaway.The useofittibathereforeimpliesthattherevelation(thatwhichtheyaretofollow)isaprecisely ordainedpath. Youwillnoticethatintheayahthatwearecomparingthisto,thereismentionofcomingtowhat Allahsentdownandtothemessengerbutthisayahmakesnomentionofthelatter.Wewilldeal withthementionofthemessengerin5:104abitlaterbutin2:170,itisimportanttonotethatby usingthewordittabaa,thephraseimpliesfollowingthemessengeranyway.HowistheArabto followwhatAllahsentdownunlesshegoestotheonereceivingHisinstructions? Theayah,nearitsconclusionmakesacriticismnotofthepeoplethatarerejectingthemessage,but oftheirfatherswhoarebeingpresentedasanexcuse(likeashieldtohidebehind).Thecriticism statesthattheydidntunderstandusingtheverb.Beforewediscussthewordandits connotations,afewinterestingobservationsarewarranted.(a)Whatisitthattheirfathersdidnt understand?Theanswerismultifaceted.Attheveryleasttheydidntunderstandthetruthaboutthe purposeoflife.Evenclosertohome,theydidntunderstandtherationalebehindtheirownreligious beliefsandlifestyles.Theyhadnojustificationfortheirpractices.Thisisimportantbecauseitcuts attherootofthedisbelieversargument.Insteadoftellingthedisbelieverthatfollowingyour forefathersisntagoodenoughreason(whichcouldhavebeensubjecttodebate),theQuranuproots theirargumentbystatingthattheirfathershadnojustifiablereasonsfordoingwhattheydidtobegin with,andsohowcanthey! Putthisstatementinperspective.FirstthecallismadetofollowwhatAllahhassentdown.Then theyrespondbysayingthattheywillfollowwhattheyfoundtheirforefatherspracticing.ThenAllah respondstotheirresponsesayingthattheirforefathersdidntunderstandathing.Thecentraltheme isfollowing.Thefollowerplaceshistrustintheleader.WiththiscriticismAllahhasexposedthe
Intheayahunderdiscussion,5:104,theimperativeoccurswiththeadditionofthepreposition whichcreatesanidiomaticconnotationinadditiontotheliteral.Theyarebeingtoldtocometowhat Allahhassentandtothemessengergivingthemeaningsof(a)cometotheminsubmissionand moreso(b)cometothemi.e.considerthem:ConsiderwhatAllahhassentdownandconsiderthe messenger.Thisconnotationisveryimportanttounderstandaswewillsee. Whenconsideringaclaim,youhavetotakeintoaccounttheclaimandtheclaimant.Ifsomeoneis makingyouagreatsalespitchbuttheircharacterappearsshadytoyou,thepitchalonewontcut it.Whenyouhaveareliablepersonaskingyoutoconsidersomethingbutthatwhichtheyareasking youtoconsiderisquestionable,youllbereluctanttoacceptandunderstandablyso.Thepeopleare beingaskedtoconsidertheclaimsinwhatAllahhassentdownandthentakeintoconsiderationthe onepresentingtheseclaimsonbehalfofAllah,i.e.,themessenger.Now,perhaps,wecanbetter appreciatewhythemessengerwasmentionedhereexplicitlyandwasreferredtoin2:170implicitly. Also,thepeoplearebeingaskedtoconsidertherevelationandthemessengerbyuseoftheword whichpaintsabeautifulimageforus.Thepeoplearebeingaskedtocomeoutoftheirlowly waystothehigher,superiorandnoblerwayoflifethewayoftherevelationandthemessenger!
