Innova Quick Guide: Innova Central

Installation Notes:
Innova Central = Innova Touch Screen = ITU (Intelligent Touch-screen Unit)
First and foremost: The ITU requires it’s own IP address on the Hospital’s network. The ITU is
a stand-alone computer that not only needs to communicate to the DL but also other external
networked devices like the MacLab (available today), IVUS (available at Unity M4) and other
devices as they are made available. Make sure the hospital is aware that the ITU will require it’s
own IP address and try to get one assigned prior to the installation or upgrade.
The ITU is delivered with a base software load of Windows CE and RAFI software. RAFI is the
manufacture’s base software that allows the ITU to talk as a WEB page to a network browser
like Internet Explorer on an external computer ie; the service laptop or the DL.
The software CD delivered with the ITU can be discarded. It contains the base load software
from RAFI which is replaced with the software delivered on the Innova’s applications CD
starting at the Unity M3b and Zenith TSM3 software releases.
The Installation Job Card for the ITU is IST0103. It mounts to the table’s side rail and cables to
the table’s transition panel. For upgrades to Installed Base systems the table transition panel may
need to be replaced. Follow the appropriate upgrade documentation. (For IQ Pack it’s 5145624-
1-100)
The Configuration Job Card for the ITU is CNF0091. When the ITU is first powered up it will
go into a service mode. The first thing the ITU needs is to have its network configuration set.
This must be done prior to upgrading the ITU’s software or configuration of any of its peripheral
devices like the Innova DL, MacLab or IVUS.
Internet Explorer on another computer on the same network is needed to do the software loads
and the rest of the configurations for the ITU.
Internet Explorer can be enabled on the DL per Job Card IST0091 and used to complete the
installation of the ITU but when done it must be removed by re-ghosting the DL per Job Card
IST0091. The Window’s tool used to install Internet Explorer does not work to completely
remove it. It leaves some DLLs active that will leave the Innova vulnerable to virus attacks.
A better way is to use Internet Explorer from another computer on the network.
A MacLab or AI1000
Connecting a service laptop to the Ethernet Switch in place of the DL configuring the
laptop with the DL’s IP address.
Using a service laptop on the hospital’s network with it own static or DHCP address.
Following the steps in the Job Card IST0091 all of the ITU software needs to be reloaded in
sequence. (See “Software Recovery” section incase of load issues)
OS Bootloader
OS CE Image
RAFI
GE Software
Modality Software (MacLab, IVUS)
Once all the software is loaded then the modalities IP configurations can be completed. If this is
done prior to loading the modality software it may need to be redone afterwards.
Innova Central support is a purchased option on the Innova and the MacLab. It requires the
service key to enable on the Innova and a software key to enable on the MacLab.

MacLab Installation Notes:
Thanks to David Billey for providing this information.
For those who want to set up the Innova Touchscreen - Maclab (ver. 6.5) interface, here are the
instructions. The Unity upgrade document only has one step regarding the MacLab setup and it is
incorrect. I used Internet Explorer on the MacLab instead of Laptop to configure the ITU and
then configured the Maclab Interface as well since Maclab FE was not available.
Here are the Instructions:
1. Log in as mlcltechuser - cntrl/alt/delete on keyboard, logoff and hold shift key down just as
we do on the Innova. Then login as user: mlcltechuser with password: mlcl!techuser. (can
also log in as administrator…user: mlcladmuser pass:mlcl!admuser).
2. Ensure InnovaCentral Option has a valid license Key on Maclab: If it does not call tech
support and give them the Maclab Serial so they can create key. (Service Console Icon on
desktop/Software options management/sw options - Innova Central/Touchscreen).
See MacLab Service Manual 2021423-023G, Page 12-2
3. Configure Innova Central/Touchscreen on MacLab: The Config files are on the D: Drive
of Maclab, not on CD as Unity Upgrade Instructions indicate.
See MacLab Service Manual 2021423-023G, Section 18
D:\GEMMS\Prucka\System\ITU\
ITU CONFIG.zip for ComboLab
ITU CL ONLY.zip for CardioLab
ITU ML OLNY.zip for Mac-Lab
4. Enable Innova Touch Screen on Maclab: The Connection Status should indicate
Connected if operating properly. (the status at Memorial SW indicated "listening on port
889" instead of "Connected" It ended up being a Hospital Firewall issue, the Maclab could
talk to ITU but ITU could not talk to Maclab).
See MacLab Service Manual 2021423-023G, Page 18-8
On the Vascular Server in the ITU directory is the MacLab documentation and the ComboLab
ITU image.

Network Information Notes:

To read the Mac address of the ITU:
Place the ITU into Windows CE mode by pushing on reset button under ITU then immediately
press and hold the Service button until the windows CE desktop appears.
On the right side of the Windows “Start” bar select a keyboard mode.
On the left side of the Windows “Start” bar select “Start”, “Run” and type “cmd”, click OK.
Type the command “ipconfig –a”. This will display all of the network configuration information
including the Mac address.
Active Ports:
888 – Communication port to the DL
889 – Communication port to the MacLab
80 – Communication port for HTTP (config and install)

Basic Troubleshooting for the ITU on 2100 IQ, Unity 31/4100 IQ

Innova Central Touch Screen: Part of the tableside control set for
Zenith 2100 IQ and Unity 31/4100 IQ systems.

Currently Innova Central will interface with Innova and MacLab providing tableside control of Innova
protocol selections, acquisition and review parameters, MacLab display properties and patient info, and
a variety of other functions. In the future, because of its open architecture, it could interface with
Advantage Windows Workstations, Logicbook Ultrasound, Volcano IVUS, Injectors and a variety of
other systems.

Innova Central was designed to make installation and setup easy. Between the TSM3 upgrade document
(5159659-100 Rev 1), SN 4620 ITU update to the upgrade document (5166755-800) and the CNF0091
Intelligent TouchScreen Unit (ITU) Configuration document (5160408-2-200 Rev 1) the installation,
configuration and software loading of the ITU is easy to follow. What is missing is troubleshooting
guidelines when the ITU does not work. This document provides some basic troubleshooting
information for communications and power and information on the disassembly of the ITU unit to use
until Engineering includes it in the ASM.

COMMUNICATIONS:
The CAT5 Ethernet cable that has been installed from the C1 rest point board to the table base
with no connection is now used with the ITU. At the table base it is plugged into the ITU
interface board. See next page. At the C1 cabinet it’s connection is still connected to J5 (table
Ethernet) but internally in the C1 it now is connected to the external network Ethernet switch
(upper one, used for DICOM image transfer) instead of the internal network Hub (RTAC to DL)
as used in the older systems. The Hub is also replaced with a switch (lower one). The upper
Ethernet switch gives the ITU the ability to ‘talk’ to other items like the MacLab. The ITU cable
takes the Ethernet signals from the ITU interface box to the ITU unit. See pin out of the cable on
the next page.

When the ITU unit is powered on and the

Ethernet connection is good a link light
will display on the upper Ethernet switch
for the ITU unit. There will also be a link
light for the DL and the external
connection to the hospital network.

POWER:
The ITU connected to the table base through the ITU interface board. Board drawings and
schematics are included in the Innova 21/31/4100 ASM DVD 5138166-1-200. Schematics for
the ITU interface board are included below.

On the back of the Omega table rest point board is connector J612 for the remote box. Normally
this connector will have a jumper plug or a cable to the remote box in the control room
connected to it. With the ITU there is a short cable from J612 to the ITU interface board J2. The
ITU interface board J1 connector will ether have the jumper plug or the remote box cable
connected to it. This connection provides P24VDC (from the positioner PS) to pins 6 & 14 of
the ITU interface board connector J3 for the ITU cable. GND is supplied on pins 2 & 12 of J3.

The ITU cable is not wired pin for pin from end to end. The P24VDC power connections are
swapped with unconnected pins. See drawing for the cable.

The CAN Bus connections at the ITU interface board J3, pins 1 & 9, and within the ITU unit are
not interconnected. No connections within the cable.

DISASEMBLY:
1. Remove the two rubber feet covering
the screws at the bottom of the ITU.

2. Turn these two Philips screws 4 to 5 NOTE: Later units these

turns CCW. Do not unscrew all the screws may be Allen head
way or remove them. and coated.

3. Do the same with the two screws at the

top of the ITU.

4. Tap the aluminum end cap to loosen it,

remove it from both the top and bottom.

5. Remove the 6 Allen head screws that

hold the upper and lower cases together.

6. Separate the two case halves being

careful not to damage the wires between
the two. Hinge it on the bottom side.

7. During power up the CPU lights should blink.

8. With an active Ethernet connection a Red and

Green LED next to the Ethernet connector
should be lit.

9. P24VDC can be measured on the Red and

Black wires.

10. For network troubleshooting a Cat 5 Ethernet cable can be connected directly to the ITU
Ethernet connection and the upper Ethernet switch in the C1 cabinet. If the link lights come
on then there is communications and the ITU should work.

11. A cable can also be run from the CAT5 connection on the ITU interface to the upper switch.
Another possibility is to connect another computer (laptop) to the CAT5 cable in the table
base and see if it will produce a link light at the switch.

12. When re-assembling, be very careful with the buttons for the service and reset switches as
they can get caught on the cover and damage the switches. Make sure the wires do not get
pinched. The rest of the re-assembly is just reverse of the disassembly.

Software Recovery:
There have been a couple of instances where communications was lost to the ITU during the software
load corrupting the ITU’s software enough that it’s impossible to load any software back to the ITU
across the network. The first procedure is an attempt to re-configure the ITU’s OS to allow connection
and the second procedure is an initialization and re-load of the ITU’s SD memory module (system disk
on a memory stick).

Procedure #1
If the ITU doesn’t pass in GE/MacLab application or in Service utility or the ITU is locked at
the screen “Data Central …” apply this :
To start the ITU without starting the GE software or the Local ITU Service Utility the
Service Button has to be pressed while booting the device.
Push on reset button under ITU then immediately the Service button has to be pressed until
the windows CE desktop appears.
Start “Command Prompt” (DOS) windows :
Select: Start > Programs > Windows Explorer or open “My Device” in the desktop upper
left corner.
Go to C:/windows folder and run (double touch) the program “FWStop.exe” this action will
disable the Firewall and allow you to access remotely (with your DL, Laptop or station using
IE) to the ITU.
The ITU service application window should appear.
Reload first the RAFI Service Software then when download completed successfully reset
the ITU and check if GE application and ITU Service utility work if not then redo step 1 to 3
and reload Window CE (OS + Boot Loader) follow by RAFI Service software and GE
application SW.
When finished, close all windows and reboot the ITU by pushing on reset button

Procedure #2
I have successfully copied from one and burned to another and tested the 512 SD memory module in
the ITU. Here are the steps used:

• Use the procedure in the prior page to disassemble the ITU.

• Remove the memory chip by first removing the tape and then push in on the chip to release it.
• Using a PNY # P-PCCARD41 PCI memory card reader in my laptops external PCI slot.
• ITU_re-build.ZIP from the Vascular Server (made with the Unity M3b version of ITU
software)

ftp://3.231.49.1/ITU%20(Innova%20Touch%20Screen)/ITU_re-build.ZIP

• 512 SD memory module locally purchased (I used a SanDisk brand).

• Formatted for FAT16
• Deflate the .ZIP file directly to the Memory Card.

If your reading a current card to duplicate it make sure you write protect it first so you don't erase it
by mistake. When re-installed it needs to be write enabled or you never get past the Innova Central
start screen.
