Hope Is A Good Thing

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:5

Too often hope is diminished or confined by an unwillingness to believe that something better can happen. It may be that after times of disappointment there is a tendency to limit our reach to only what we have experienced and are convinced will be applied as a result. Long term illness, oppression, harsh people, personal handicaps, and even ordinary living call on us to simply accept where we are, get comfortable, and seek no better. In the movie version of Stephen Kings novel, The Shawshank Redemption, we are engaged by the way that incarcerated men acclimate to their lives. At one point, Red tells his friend Andy, Hope is a dangerous thing. Perhaps many of us have been sold that message. Consider Andys response.Dear Red, If you're reading this, you've gotten out. And if you've come this far, maybe you're willing to come a little further. You remember the name of the town, don't you? I could use a good man to help me get my project on wheels. I'll keep an eye out for you and the chessboard ready. Remember, Red. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you, and finds you well. Your friend, Andy Maybe we need a reminder. Maybe we need to hear it often. Hope really is a good thing. Hope is not just a shout into the wind. It is the place where desire and opportunity meet. It is the driving force that moves us forward in the pursuit of new opportunity. Hope can be scary. With it we are taken into the unknown, into unfamiliar territory. We are taken out of balance, and pressed to exert ourselves. And it is exactly what we need. Hope says that there is something better. No matter where we are, or what our circumstances may be, we can raise the banner of hope and look for even better things. This life is not all there is. God has given us a promise. His love has given us hope. It is a good thing. Russ
