Tutorial : Calculate Erlang

Contributed by otherlocation Thursday, 31 May 2007 Last Updated Friday, 29 July 2011

It has been quite a long time that i use the Erlang formula to calculate the BHCA values. Since there are so many online guide about how to calculate BHCA and most of the guide were written in English,today my attempt is to write this Erlang guide in Malay.

Guys, Click here for more example Example Click here where I calculate for the desired capacity for planning. Example where someone explain to me in detail abou calculating the BHCA. Usually, I calculate BHCA in two situation

First

When the system is ready and running, E1 has been allocated, therefore we need to come out with the calculation of BHCA in order for us to know what is the capacity that can be supported by the system. BHCA = (Number of Circuit * 3600)/ MHT BHCA means Busy Hour Call Attempt, where we assume the maximum call period of 24 hours.

Second

For planning purposes, I calculate Erlang in order for me to understand how much Erlang is required to add to suppoer the capacity.

erlang = (BHCA * MHT)/3600

Use the erlang results above and check with this table. Here is an Erlang B Table for 1 - 50 channels, 0.001% - 0.6% grade of service and an Erlang B Table for 1 - 50 channels, 0.7% - 40% grade of service to come out with the number of E1 needed. MHT is the mean holding time. Is it an average call duration by the subscriber.

However, is needed to get what is the forecast of BHCA or number of subscriber who will use the system later.
