How to do Discipleship

“Jesus had a heart for the nations, but knew He could reach the world through the
12.”
Is. 60:22 = “…One can become a mighty nation…”
Mark 3:14= “Jesus raised 12, so that He might be WITH them…”
1Thes. 2:8= “Share not only the Gospel, but your life…”

* This all starts after follow up…

* Point of discipleship is to mature all in Christ and to reproduce.
* Discipleship must be one on one to truly be caught by another. (Ex. Elijah and
Elisha or Paul and Timothy)…

A. Establish them in a Quiet Time Daily

- The discipler should teach and do a QT with the disciple.
- A good tool is “7 Minutes with God.”
-The Goal for a QT should be in the morning (Ex. Mark 1:35= Jesus arose early
to be with the Father). (Ex. Eph 6 = The Armor of God) should be put on before the
daily battle takes place. What soldier puts their armor on after a battle?
- Keep an attitude of excitement about receiving from God’s word, so they will
get excited about it.
- Increase their spiritual diet as they grow. Have them have longer QT’s as they
grow.
- “…When people get too much too fast they quit, but give them what they are
hungry for.”
A2. Establish them in QT by a reading plan.
- First, have them read through a Gospel (preferably Mark or John) to have
them focus on who Jesus is. This will help develop an intimate relationship
with God.
- Have them pick out a favorite verse for each heading or chapter, and keep a
record of it.
- Tell them to meditate on the verses they have chosen throughout their day.
- When they finish the Gospel chosen, have them pick 3-5 verses to memorize.
- Teach them to apply God’s word, by asking the 3 application questions:
1. What impressed me the most?
2. Where do I fall short?
3. What can I do about it by God’s grace? (The applications should be
SPECIFIC and they should be kept accountable to it). (We are to be a
“hearer and doer of the Word).”
- Then get them into an organized reading plan. (Like read the Bible in a
year…)
B. Do a discipleship series with them.
*Suggested: Navigators, Design for Discipleship books 1-7. Make sure to start
this after follow up books (Lessons on Assurance and Lessons on Christian
Living).
* Do the Topical Memory System with the books and other scripture memory for
the other suggested studies.
* Suggested follow up and discipleship plan is:
Lessons on Assurance Book
Justification
Lessons on Christian Living Book
Design for Discipleship (DFD) 1 Book
The Trinity
Water Baptism
DFD 2- After “Conversing with God” do
Fasting
Finish DFD 2
Separation
DFD 3
Praise, Worship & Thankfulness
Fearing God
DFD 4
3 Aspects of Man
DFD 5- After “The Holy Spirit” do
More on the Holy Spirit
Spiritual Gifts
Healing
Finish DFD 5
Heaven
The Enemy
Hell
The Bema
DFD 6
DFD 7
C. There are many resources to enhance one’s growth also.
* (This can be during discipling…or when they are done with all the above)…
- Remind them to regularly review scripture memory to keep it fresh.
- Have them learn to follow up and disciple others (“pass on”) what they are
taught.
- Suggest them to get the Navigators “Life Issues” scripture memory packet.
- Suggest them to continue on scripture memory through sermons, QT’s, or
other Bible studies they do.
- Do group Bible Studies with them. ( Ex. Faithfulness, Available, Teachable
(or known as FAT) study, exhaustive book study (like DFD 7), topical study
or even a Bible character (or known as ABC) study).
- Have them learn to lead these studies with a group.

*Pr. 16:9- Man makes plans, but God determines His steps.
-We have a plan, but must remember to allow God to add to it (or alter it) for
one’s personal needs. But, this should not be an excuse for lazy disciple making.
