PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

PROPOSAL FOR SPORTS COMPLEX

1.0

INTRODUCTION

As a consultant company we would like to propose to design a sports complex which would improve KLIUCs facilities. The sports complex will not cater for all sporting activities, because the area that we are proposing for is not enough to conduct all the sport facilities in the campus. We would like to propose a football stadium and running track inside the stadium.

The intention of the proposed complex is to construct a multipurpose stadium with a capacity to hold football and running sport competitions. This step is believed to alleviate the shortage of entertainment facilities for the college. In this sport complex proposed latest technology would be utilized, our complex will implement sustainability and green technology in order to attract interest of masses, and create a new image about the location they are built in, to launch urban regeneration in their surrounding environment. Therefore, we come up with a contradiction in stadium construction.

This proposed complex has a stadium of 15000 seats, Olympic standard run track and World Football Cups standard field to be built inside Kliuc. In addition to that it would consist of Administration offices, Team preparation rooms with massage, Gymnasium Facilities, Shops, public toilets and other services and Surua (main prayer hall). The entire project will be undertaken within the vicinity of the kliuc campus.

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

The main functional component of the sports center being the stadium, other facilities is also included. The design has also expansion possibilities with cost efficient strategies. The design reflects local culture (both tangible and intangible heritages).

4.1

Design Concept

The idea of the concept of the stadium design is generated from Wau Bulan which is a traditional Malay game (figure 4.1). Wau bulan is one of Malaysian symbols and mostly played at the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

This symbol also has been used on Malaysia 50 cents coin, and as Malaysia Airlines (MAS) symbol. It got its name from the crescent moon-like shape of its lower section. (Figure 4.2) show the design of our proposed stadium.

The type of turf that will be used for the field is a natural grass. We chose this type of turf because it much easier to maintained than artificial grass. Since Malaysia is a climate country, during rainy seasons, it doesnt need to be watered. It is also suitable for other types of sports to be played in.

The roof of the stadium, which has the moon shape, is mostly made from glass and supported by steel truss (Figure 4.5). The roof will be coated with heat reflective coating, to reduce the heat especially on the seats. There will also be solar panels on the roof, and this will be used as electric generating for both stadium and office block.

BCE 430 CAPSTONE DESGIN 5.0 SUSTAINABILITY

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

The concepts of sustainability envision a new approach to save water, energy and material resources in the construction and maintenance of the buildings. To evaluate sustainability in stadium construction, we should put forward the essential criteria while evaluating sustainability in stadium construction for hosting sports events. Sustainability concerning the environmental sustainability which it involves how a building relates to its immediate environment as well as its environmental concerns, social sustainability which the people who use that building in the environment, and financial sustainability which the entertainment and events within that building to ensure the building remains financially viable.

With reference to these criteria, we will try to review the development of the concept of sustainability in stadium construction, and underline the design and planning approaches in this filed. It can reduced operating cost by as much as 9%, increase building values by 7.5% and realize 6.6% increase in return on investment.

In this stadium, Malaysian Green Building rating tool (GBI) will be used to design and construct more sustainable buildings. The GBI non-residential Rating tool evaluates the sustainable aspects of buildings that are commercial, institutional and industrial in nature. (Table 5.1) shown the GBI point allocation chart for non-residential.

BCE 430 CAPSTONE DESGIN 5.1 Sustainable concept of stadium design

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

In order to meet up with latest concept of design, and to make this proposed stadium as green stadium, it important to use different types of technology so that could meet up with sustainability.

5.1.1 Energy Efficiency Solar panel

The types use for solar panel for this sports complex is Photovoltaic (PV). PV applications in Malaysia are restricted to rural electrification, street and garden lighting. For this proposed sports complex PV will be used in the roof. PV generally fitted on the roof at an angle to maximize the amount of sunlight that hits the panels. It known that each solar array has a specific rating. Some are 50 W, 80 W or 120 W which means how much power it can output under ideal sunny conditions. Each solar panel is approximately 1.5 m length and 1.0 m wide (Figure 5.1 and 5.2). Alternating current generator proposed to be used to transform direct current electricity from solar PV systems as an inverter.

Figure 5.1
KLIUC
KUALA LUMPUR INFRASTRUCTURE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

Solar Panels
Page 17

BCE 430 CAPSTONE DESGIN

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

Figure 5.2

areas of solar panels Area of Construct the Panels at Both Site

For this sports complex, we proposed to use 100 W light bulbs for the light purposes inside the stadium and outside the stadium 16 W light bulb. The 100 W light bulbs will be on 5 hours a day and 16 W light bulb 10 hours a day. By calculation 100/1000 (kiloWatt) x 5 (hours) x 30 days = 15 kWh hours per month.

16/1000 (kiloWatt) x 10 (hours) x 30 days = 4.8 kWh hours per month.

In this proposal for sports complex we require to have 15 kW h approximately. Then we require the following number of solar panels 15 kw h per day divided by 7 hours of sunlight per day = 2.14 kW from the solar

KLIUC
KUALA LUMPUR INFRASTRUCTURE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

Page 18

BCE 430 CAPSTONE DESGIN

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

It proposed that a 120 W panel will be used, one of the largest units available today, then:

2.14 (kW) divided by 120/1000 (kW) = 18 panels

This is a rough calculation but it shows that under ideal conditions, we require having more than 18 panels

Cost of solar panel

Most of the equipment required for solar power generation is still imported from U.S., Europe or Japan. While the Malaysian government provides exemption on import duty and sales tax for imported renewable energy equipment.

The way the system of PV work

Solar electric panels are composed mainly of silicon. Silicon is used because it naturally releases electrons (electrical energy) when hit with a photon (light source). The trick for photovoltaic manufacturers was to find a way to "catch" the displaced electrons and use their energy. Most solar panels consist of a clear protective top layer, two layers of specially treated silicon with collecting circuitry attached to the top layer, and a tough polymer backing layer. From there, the panel can be framed (adds durability) or unframed (reduces weight), and in some cases the layers are even comprised of flexible materials. The vast majority of PV panels work in the same way. There are no moving parts in the PV panel, so maintenance is limited to keeping the junction boxes and wiring free from moisture and corrosion, and keeping the surface of the panel clean enough to allow light through to the silicon layers.

BCE 430 CAPSTONE DESGIN 5.1.2 Indoor Environmental Quality Ventilation

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

In this stadium passive natural ventilation will be used. Ventilation using controlled louvers, large shafts and the natural warmer air, and this has reduced air conditioning demand by 40%.

5.1.3 Material and Resources

Reuse building materials and products to reduce demand for virgin materials and reduce creation of waste. This serves to reduce environmental impact associated with extraction and processing of virgin resources. Integrate building design and its build ability with selection of reused building materials, taking into account their embodied energy, durability, carbon content and life cycle costs.

5.1.4 Water Efficiency Rainwater harvesting that leads to 15% reduction in potable water consumption, it proposed that the rainwater will be collected from the roof in four large tanks in each corner of stadium, and recycled waters will be used for flushing the toilets.

BCE 430 CAPSTONE DESGIN 6.0 TREATMENT PLAN

PROPOSAL OF SPORTS COMPLEX

It is proposed that for the wastewater treatment plan for the stadium to use the tank below (figure 6.1). One of it features is that one set integration underground wastewater treatment
plant, buried below the surface, the surface above the equipment can be green, without housing construction.

Two biological contact oxidation process use patented aerator, no need blower and other
complex fittings. And the size is small compared to activated sludge.

The processing equipment generally does not require expert management, just timely
maintenance and repair of equipment

Has the good adaptability for the small amount of water quality changes.
Without compress container. Air compressors, circulating pumps and other equipment, thereby significantly reducing the investment costs.
