Literary Analysis: Genre , Subgenre & Author's Purpose

There are five main genres in literature: 1. Fiction: writing that is a product of the imagination. Historical Fiction: based on or around a person or event from history. Science Fiction: dealing with aliens, the future, or advanced technology. Fantasy: containing monsters, magic, or other supernatural elements. Realistic Fiction: a story that could have happened, but didnt. 2. Folklore: stories that were handed down through the oral tradition. Fairy Tale: a story with magic, monsters, and/or talking animals. Fable: a very short story, usually with talking animals and has a moral. Myth: has gods or goddesses and often accounts for the creation of something. Legend: a story based on something that might have once been real, but has since become exaggerated beyond the realm of nonfiction. Tall Tale: stories usually set in the American frontier (border) where the main character has exaggerated strengths, skills, or size. The tone of the author is humorous 3. Nonfiction: writing that is true or factual. Informational Writing: writing that provides information on a topic. Persuasive Writing: writing that attempts to influence the reader. Autobiography: the story of ones life told by oneself. Biography: the story of someones life told by someone else. 4. Drama: writing that appears as a play or script. Comedy: has a happy ending. Tragedy: ends in death and sadness. 5. Poetry: writing that is concerned with the beauty of language

An author writes for many reasons. An author may write to inform by giving you facts or true information about a subject. Some authors write fiction stories or stories that are not true. They write these stories to entertain you. Other authors may write to persuade or to try to get you to do something.

He had a freshly killed bear on his back, so he whipped it off, climbed right up on those rays of sunlight and began beating the hot bear carcass against the ice blocks which were squashing the sun. Soon a gush of hot oil burst out of the bear and it melted the ice. Davy gave the sun a good hard kick to get it started, and the sun's heat unfroze the earth and started it spinning again. So Davy lit his pipe on the sun, shouldered the bear, slid himself down the sun rays before they melted and took a bit of sunrise home in his pocket.
