Nee, Victor and Jimy Sanders. 2001. "Understanding the Diversity of
Immigrant Incorporation: A Forms-of-Capital Model." Ethnic and Racial Studies
24:386-411.

The mode of incorporation is largely a function of the social, financial, and human-cultural
capital of immigrant families and how these resources are used by individuals within and
apart from the existing structure of ethnic networks and institutions.

The subjects of this research were Chinese, Filipino, and Korean immigrants who resided in
the greater Los Angeles area. The sample of Koreans were drawn randomly from the Korean
Directory of Southern California. The Filipino sample was randomly drawn from lists of
naturalization immigrants. Next, the Chinese sample was drawn three different ways
randomly: selections from a phone book, lists of naturalization, and snowball sampling in
Chinatown.

During the summers of 1989 and 1990, face to face interviews were conducted, typically, over two
days. They lasted between three and five hours in the preferred language of the subject. The
interviewers tried to include the all live-in adults in each household. " The interviews explored
how the immigrants' job histories were influenced by the financial resources they brought to their
new country or continue to hold in the old country, by adaptive strategies conceived and carried
out by families (nuclear and extended), by participation in ethnic institutions and social networks,
and by various background characteristics such as educational attainment and English language
skills (Nee, Sanders, 2001)."

3.What are the characteristics of the population studied? How many people, ages,
genders, race/ethnicity/nationality, professions, etc.? How were these people
selected?
6.Critique this article, discuss method, findings, analysis, writing style, or other
elements of the research project.

4.What research method(s) was employed by the researchers? Was this appropriate for the
population and the research question? Were there limitations to this method?
This is a difficult article to critique because it was exploritory. I did find it
extremely interesting, and it was well detailed. It was a very difficult
sample because finding the people to participate was difficult for the
researchers. I was also surprised at the choices of populations. I think
maybe including different immigrant nationalities next to would be
helpful.
