Caldwell/West Caldwell Technology Updates

A Message from the Technology Team
The Technology Team, consisting of the group from Synergistix, Bill Brophy, and myself, would like to let you know of some of the new or improved technologies that were deployed over the summer as well as some of whats coming. Our primary mission this summer was to improve technology performance and reliability throughout the district. Our rst stop was the data center where we re-built many of the systems that the various technologies in the district depend upon. With this new foundation we hope to be delivering many exciting new technologies this year. Within are some of the highlights of what has already been done and some of what will be coming. -Patrick Hi"ins, Jr.

Public Wireless
Bring your own device to work and connect to the internet--no passwords necessary

We have made signicant progress in expanding wireless coverage throughout the district. With more than 50 additional wireless access points deployed this summer we now have over 200 access points providing the district wireless coverage. Also, we have provided a wireless network called CWCBOE-Public which is available to all teachers, students, sta and visitors without needing a passkey. What does this mean for you? Now you can bring your own smartphone, tablet, laptop, or iPod and connect it to the internet! However, this network is for Internet access only and does not provide access to internal district resources (homeshare, printers, etc). The rst time you use this network you may be prompted to accept the districts Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in order to continue. We look forward to the innovations that spring from this!

MOBILE CARTS We have completely revamped all of the various mobile carts throughout the district, which in conjunction with the improved wireless coverage, will provide access to more reliable and speedier mobile lab environments. You will also see new wireless printers on many of the carts.

PROJECTORS AND DOCUMENT CAMERAS If you didnt have a projector in your classroom before you may have found one was installed this summer. Weve installed dozens of new projectors throughout the district in our continuing eort to put projectors in every room. Also, in tandem with the projector deployment we installed many document cameras for quick and easy projection of your documents.

PRINTING Approximately 30 new network printers have been deployed around the district to replace aging printers. These new printers are faster, have outstanding print quality and are less expensive to operate than the old printers. Also, back in the data center, we have moved all printers in the district to a new print server that will get jobs printed faster than ever before.

HIGH-SPEED ZERO CLIENTS What is a zero client? If you spend any time in the 315 lab at the middle school youll have a chance to try them out. They are a new kind of desktop computing appliance that starts up in just a few seconds and has you and your students logged on in less than a minute. Based on the early successes of this lab we hope to be seeing many more of these devices in the future! HIGH SCHOOL USER PROFILES Last years troubles with saving your settings at the high school are behind us. Whatever settings you make (email, favorites, oce preferences, etc) will follow you from PC to PC. No matter where you are in the high school you will have your system preferences follow you!

MICROSOFT OFFICE Were rolling out the latest in Microsoft Oce throughout the district. You may have noticed that where before you had just Oce 2003 you now have the option of 2003 or 2007. This was just a stepping stone to bringing Oce 2010 to every PC in the district. If you havent seen it yet, you will be soon!
