www.thestovery.com - 518-638-8950 OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND AT THURMAN FALL FARM TOUR- Organizers of the 2011 Thurman Fall Farm Tour (or TFFT as theyve come to abbreviate it), say that the Columbus Day Weekend (Oct. 8-9) event has been expanded to include nearly twenty different sites and activities all over their little mountain town. There will be farms to visit, demonstrations, shopping, sampling, gospel concert, garden walks and woods talks. See horses in action as they draw logs or participate in training sessions. Ride the Saratoga and North Creek Railway in a special TFFT hop (passes available only at the tour sites), have your blood pressure checked, see an art and rustic furniture gallery and a remote art studio, learn how to raise Christmas trees, and take in a barn dance. DISASTER UNEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE (DUA) AVAILABLE-Residents who are unemployed as a direct result of the recent flooding and devastation caused by Hurricane Irene may be eligible for weekly benefit payments under the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program, state and federal officials announced today. The DUA program extends coverage to self-employed people, farm workers and others who have lost employment as a direct result of the disaster, Andrew X. Feeney, state coordinating officer, said. It is specifically designed to assist those who are otherwise ineligible for state unemployment benefits. The availability of this program was initiated by President Obamas August 31 disaster declaration for parts of New York State and extends to those living or working in any of the 20 counties eligible for individual assistance. They are: Albany, Clinton, Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Montgomery, Nassau, Orange, Otsego, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, Warren, and Westchester counties. To apply for DUA, call the Telephone Claims Center (TCC) at 1-888-209-8124 or 1-877-358-5306 if you live out of state. Have your Social Security number, earnings from your most recent tax year and employment history available when you call. The deadline to apply for DUA is October 3, 2011. SUICIDE PREVENTION WALK- Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults in the United States. Hoosick has seen its share of these tragedies over the years, most notably with the two teen suicides that occurred in 2010. Last year more than 500 people participated in the first community suicide prevention walk organized by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition with the help of the Marcoux and Sweeney families. The event was very moving and meaningful to those touched directly and indirectly by suicide. Several people who tragically lost loved ones decades ago turned out to be part of this walk to save lives. The community is invited to walk with us again on October 9 to raise awareness about depression and suicide, to advocate for mental health issues, and to assist survivors of suicide loss in the recent and distant past. Walkers should gather in Wood Memorial Park where candles and ribbons will be distributed. The walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. St. Marks Church will provide a free dinner for walkers afterward. The church will also be open for a time of fellowship and sharing after the walk. For information, call 518-686-9050. THE PLAY THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND:The Our Town Theater Groups upcoming October 21, 22, and 23 production of Tom Stoppards comedy The Real Inspector Hound directed by Filomena Riviello, one of our areas finest theatre professionals. Born in southern Italy, Ms. Riviello immigrated with her family to Astoria, Queens, NYC, just before her fourth birthday. In school, she performed in holiday-themed plays, and as early as grade 5 her teachers complimented her skills in character development. In ninth grade, Ms. Riviello was cast as four different characters in Once Upon A Mattress, and she developed a life long love of theatre. Ms. Riviello has found the most success in directing. She directed 90+ plays in New York City and helped develop several acting companies. She eventually found herself turning down many offers to direct plays because she was in such high demand she didnt have enough time to do everything she was offered. A member of the Screen Actors Guild, Ms. Riviello performed in television with a role in a soap opera entitled Loving, accepted small roles in films, and performed for seasons two through six as the coffee-shop waitress in the TV hit, Sex And The City. Ms. Riviello relocated to the Adirondacks as a result of one of the worst tragedies in American history: the attacks of 9/11. After the destruction of the World Trade Center, theaters closed and work for actors and directors dried up. She came to Thurman in 2005 to enjoy Adirondack living. The Our Town Theatre Group held auditions that year. Ms. Riviello was cast, and began a career with OTTG. She had the female lead role the following year in The Book Of Days. Since then, she has directed and acted in many OTTG productions. She is one of the groups most experienced members. In addition to her OTTG work, Ms. Riviello taught theatre part-time and directed at SUNY Adirondack. She has also enacted local historical characters for the Warrensburg and Thurman Historical Societies. The Real Inspector Hound opens at the Tannery Pond Community Center on Friday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. Additional performances are on Saturday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for students.
