UNITEN ICE STUDENT CHAPTER

ICE Student Alumni Forum 2011 22nd June 2011 Report

ICE Student Alumni Forum was an event by Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Student Chapter for the year 2011. Held in the College of Engineering, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, on the 22nd June 2011, the forum was the first of its kind organized by UNITEN ICE Student Chapter.

The forum was held with the objectives to equip the students in a broad understanding of civil engineering in real life working environment context and increase the knowledge of the opportunities for Civil Engineering graduates among current students. It also presented an opportunity for the UNITEN Alumni to discuss the problems faced by the civil engineers today. This would improve the understanding and perception of Civil Engineering through the eyes of the experienced and skilled workers in this industry.

The panelists were Ir. Wong Yik Fong (G&P Professional), Ms Moira Zamri (IWK Design Engineer), Ms Wafi and Ms Nadia Adam (Government sector), Ms Calene Lee (Design Engineer, Oil and Gas from Tecnip), Mr Selva (Site Safety & Planning Engineer from Sunway Construction Sdn. Bhd.), Dr Sandy Kok (YTL Corporation) and Mr K.K. Tan (Site Engineer from Binapuri Sdn. Bhd.). Also present was our very own advisor, Dr Chua Kok Hua, civil engineering lecturers and about 40 students.

The event was started with welcoming speech by the program director to the guests and the panels of the forum. It was held in a rather informal fashion promote a comfortable environment to the students so that the sharing session would be one of no reservations and hesitation.

Questions by questions were asked and each of the panelists took the time to share meticulous details of their experiences and useful advices. The duration of nearly two hours was fully utilized and though more questions could be asked, the forum had to be ended as it was getting late. Light refreshments were provided and panelists could be

seen engaging in clusters of conversations with students who approached them for more insiders information. At about 10pm, the forum was officially ended.

At the end of the event, Dr Chua expressed his hopes that a continuation of the forum should be held in the near future as it has certainly been beneficial to those who participated. The objectives from this forum was achieved with much success as observed by the students who actively participated in the sharing session by asking questions and expanding the horizon of what they understand in the field of civil engineering. It has been observed that the ICE Student Alumni Forum has inspired similar forum by other clubs in UNITEN.
