Class, go back to your proper seats. Arrange your chairs and kindly pick up the pieces of clutter under your chairs. (name of student), please lead the prayer. (prayer) Good morning class! Please sit down. So class, have you ever wondered how your appliances at home work? How is electricity able to power your appliances? Good morning, maam!

Electricity coming from generators (Meralco) flows through electrical wirings and into the appliances. Appliances are parts of huge electrical circuits.

Thats right! So in our houses, we have electrical circuits. Today, you are going to learn something about electric circuit connections. But before that, let us first have a brief review of the concepts we have studied last time. B. Recall I will show you several electric field lines patterns. And tell me whether the patterns are correct or not. Just say correct if it is correct and incorrect if it is not. And I will ask one student to explain. Do you understand? So, lets have the first diagram.

Yes, maam.

Is this correct or incorrect? Very good! Lets have the second one.

Thats correct!

How about this, class? Excellent! Heres the third one.

Correct!

How about this, class, is this correct or incorrect? Why is it incorrect, _______? Very well explained. Lets have the fourth one.

Thats incorrect, maam. It is incorrect because positive charge produces outward electric field lines.

What can you say in this diagram, is this correct? Why do you say so? Yes, ______?

Incorrect! The diagram is incorrect because a symmetric sphere charge should produce symmetrically positioned electric field lines.

And now for the last diagram.

Is this correct or incorrect? Why is it so? Yes, ________?

That is incorrect! Negative charge should have an inward electric field lines.

Very good, class! It seemed that you are all ready to go to our next topic which I have mentioned a while ago Electric circuits!

C. Motivation Lets have a short game to test your thinking skills. The title of our activity is Whats the word? Thats the word! (see attachment)

II. Meaning Making Lesson Proper Congratulations to the winners. You will receive your prize after class. Right in your own home, you have the power to reduce electricity demand, and when you reduce demand, you can cut the amount of resources. Not only it is important for you to save electricity, but it's also important for your entire community. If all the homes and businesses in your community worked together to save electricity, it would really help the fight against global warming. So, how can you save electricity for you tohelp the community? Yes, ______? Thats right. Here are some simple but very useful tips to save electricity in your own home: Be sure to turn off lights when you leave a room. Turn off machines when you leave a room (examples include TVs, computers, radios, stereos, video games, and DVD players). When you go away on a trip, be sure to unplug these same machines because they have stand-by functions that consume electricity even when they are turned off. Make use of daylight hours and do not turn on lights and lamps. We have here some of the different circuit components you have revealed in our previous game. So, let us define them one by one. Voltage, otherwise known as electric potential difference, measured in volts, is the difference in electric potential between two points. Resistance is a measure of the degree to which an object opposes an electric current through it.

I will turn off the lights if they are not needed.

Current is a flow of electric charge through a medium. Any questions? None, maam.

We will have a short activity (see attachment). It is entitled as Thinking Scientifically: Is That Circuit Really Closed? Projected on the screen are the materials that you are going to use. But before I explain the procedure, here are some safety precautions you all need to follow. Never disassemble a battery, as the materials inside may be toxic and may damage your skin and clothes. Do not put the battery in fire; it will cause the battery to rupture. Also avoid placing batteries in water, as this may cause the battery to fail. And so as with the other materials. When stripping the wire, ensure that the force of cutting is directed away from your body and other personnel. Is everything clear? Ok. So here is the procedure. The class will be divided into two groups. First, close the circuit by connecting the ends of the two stripped wire to the terminals to the light bulb and to the terminals of the battery. Then, observe what happens to the light bulb. Then, open the circuit by removing one end of the wire from one terminal of the dry cell of the battery. Observe what happens to the light. Lastly, repeat the first step, but this time connect another wire to the terminals of the battery, and observe. This activity is good for only 10 minutes. Do you have any questions? Yes, maam.

(activity) Ok, class, times up! So, what happens to the light bulb on the first

set up? Yes, ______? Correct. So, base on your observations, an electric current will flow through a closed or open circuit? Very good. Can you explain more?

The light bulb lighted.

An electric current will flow through a closed circuit. By closing the circuit, it made the connection a complete path for the electric current to flow through.

From that, how do you define a closed circuit? Yes, ______?

A closed circuit contains a complete loop or path through which an electric current passes.

Very good! (Slide: A closed circuit provides an uninterrupted, endless path for the charges to flow freely.) What about on the second set up? What happens to the light bulb? Yes, ______? Why do you think so?

On the second set up, the light went out. It went out because we disconnected one wire from the terminal of the battery. Thus, the electric current stopped flowing.

Base on your answer, how do you define an open circuit?

An open circuit does not have a complete connection. May be, the connecting wire is not connected properly.

Very good observation. (Slide: An open circuit is a circuit in which the normal path of current has been interrupted.) For the third set up, what happens to the light when you connect an excess wire to the terminals of the battery? Yes, ______?

Given the third set up, the light went out as we connected another wire to the batteries.

Correct, and that circuit is shorted. So, base on the activity, please define short circuit. Yes, _____?

Good. (Slide: A short circuit is an accidental path of low resistance which passes an abnormally high amount of current. A short circuit exists

A short circuit is when electric current got diverted to an unintended path instead of flowing to the bulb.

whenever the resistance of a circuit or the resistance of a part of a circuit drops in value to almost zero ohms.) Do you understand? Do you have any clarifications? II. Firm Up A. Activity Proper Now you are already refreshed with the key parts of an electric circuit as well as their electric symbols which will be very important for todays lesson. Projected on the screen are the symbols of circuit components as well as their actual illustrations. (slideshow of symbols of circuit components and their actual illustrations) So for you to understand how a circuit works with its parts, we will have another activity. (see attachment) None, maam.

In this activity, you will assess your thinking skills in connections and connecting circuit components based on diagrams. The class will be divided into two groups. Each group will be given the necessary materials for this activity. Each will also have a manila paper where you are to write your predictions and observations. After the activity, one representative from each group will discuss their answer. I will first give the circuit diagrams assigned to each group. Select and discuss circuit diagrams given to you which your group believes to be properly assembled. Then answer the predictions part. I will only give you 5 minutes for this part. After 5 minutes, each group will receive the necessary materials. These are the materials you will use. (The teacher will present the materials to the class) You can set up first the circuits which your group believes to be properly assembled. Close each circuit and observe what happens. Then assemble also those circuits you did not choose. Close each circuit and observe what happens. You will be given only 5 minutes to assemble all the circuit diagrams assigned to

your group. After the given time, you are to write your observations on the manila paper. Is everything clear? So, can we start the activity? Yes, maam! Yes, maam!

Here are each groups circuit diagrams and manila paper. You may now start answering the predictions part.

Thank you maam!

5 minutes had already passed. Here are the materials. Remember, you only have 5 minutes to assemble the circuits. You may now start.

You only have 2 minutes remaining. If you are already through in assembling the circuits, you may also start answering the observations part. Do you have any questions?

2 minutes had passed. Start writing your observations on the manila paper. I will only give you 5 minutes in completing the table.

Okay, times up! Kindly go back to your proper seats. Arrange the chairs. All groups, post your manila paper in front. Lets hear from the representative of each group.

(Representatives will explain their work)

Lets start with group 1.

Group 1: Our group believes thatonly the first circuit connection is properly assembled. (explanation)

Group 2:

Very good! And now, group 2

Our group believes that only the first and the second circuit connections are properly assembled. (explanation)

Thank you representatives, very well explained. III. DEEPEN Discussion Synthesis and Generalization So, based on the activity you performed a while ago, how can you say that a circuit is properly assembled or not?

Like for example in the previous activity we did, if the bulb lighted, then it is properly assembled.

But how can you explain the circuit diagram which has two light bulbs, and after assembling it, the other bulb did not light while the other did?

Given that circuit, it is not properly assembled. (explanation)

There are many reasons for that. Maybe the wires are very long, or maybe the set ups are not perfect. So based on that argument, how can you say that a circuit is properly assembled or not? Very good! So, what should be the minimum components of an electric circuit for it to work?

From the activity we performed, a circuit is properly assembled if all the bulbs light.

An electric circuit must have at least a source of energy, a load, and wires to connect the first two. For a circuit to properly function, it must be closed.

What else?

Excellent! A properly assembled circuit must have at least a load, a source, and connecting wires. And it must be closed if it has a switch. IV. TRANSFER Application Integration of Technology

Lets see if you really understand our topic for today. This will also as a refresh for your mind. Please get a -sheet of yellow paper. Answer the following questions: (see slide show) (see attachment) Can someone give a summary of what you have learned today? Do you have any questions or clarifications? If none, then Ill see you next meeting. Goobye, class! Goodbye, maam! Resources (Web Sites, Software, Books, etc.) Grobs Basic Electronics : 7th edition by Bernard Grob, Mitchel E.
