WHY LAY IN IT, WHEN YOU CAN LIVE IN IT? Fall break is right around the corner, and you need to cozy up in the perfect attire. Whether its to keep you warm on the camping trip or tailgating in the cold, the Selkbag 4G Lite is perfect. Shoot, need a last minute Halloween outfit? Heres your blessing in disguise!

This month in history: When people think Thanksgiving, they think turkey, cranberries and November. For good reason too, Thanksgiving is now celebrated the last Thursday in November. However, did you know that both President George Washington and Abraham Lincoln announced Thanksgiving in October?

UPDATE YOUR PHONE, NOW! Being a college student doesnt mean you have you look like one. So what if you broke your phone at the party last weekend, and your mom gave you her old flip phone.? This shouldnt stop you from shining through the crowd. Update the old phone into your own style!

What is College Daybreak?

HOWTOBE MOREJERSEY
If youre really in a rut this Halloween season and cant figure out a costume, read all about how to embrace the deity of Snooki-ism where daily practice include GTL and fist-pumping. Caution, heavy fake tanning is involved.

On the same October day, 74 years later, mired in a great civil war, Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official, yearly holiday to be celebrated the last Thursday of November. Why is October the best month of the year? Because October means playoff baseball!

College Daybreak is a newsletter meant to give you all the information you need to stay wellinformed in a quick, readable format.

LEAVE THE PURSE BEHIND. No, seriously. It can be a pain in the ass having to carry around the clutch while youre out on the town. Not only is it bulky and you want to set it down everywhere, it also keeps your hands full (how else will you hold your drink?). With the Callet, it saves you carrying both. Placing your credit cards/ID in one place with your phone is your safest bet. Think, how many times have you actually set your phone down? Its glued to your hand!

Movies to watch for: Have you always wanted to know the story behind the The Three Musketeers but been to lazy to actually read the book or (gasp!) watch a movie from last millennium? Well good news for you, because Hollywood is remaking the remake of a remake of a remake. Thats right, there was a version made in 1921, 1948 and 1993. This new one looks pretty good, if you ask the Daybreak. It stars Orlando Bloom, some other people, and Christopher Waltz who rocketed to fame after on his great performance as Colonel Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds. The movie will premiere October 21. Random reason to celebrate: Halloween should provide creative college students with AT LEAST two weeks of celebration, but if youre really in a pinch in the early weeks of October, celebrate the debut of the Peanuts comic strip with a Charlie Brown and Co. themed party.

ItsOctoberAlready?
With October appearing out of nowhere, its been brought to my attention that I dont have a Halloween costume! However, this isnt something new to me, I usually let creative thoughts come to mind a couple of days before. I dont think Ive ever paid for my costumes. Get crafty, peeps! Ladies, here is the only holiday that you are allowed to dress a little less conservative. Remember though, if youre willing to show that much skin o in public (not to mention in the freezing cold) guys are going to look at you in hopes of... well, you know. If youre okay with that, bring out the bandanas, tape, bras and lingerie, and strut your stu . Show what your momma gave ya, and take pictures. Its college, and you only live once. Men, I think I can speak for every woman out there: we love a man in uniform. Heck, grab a few of your guys and dress as the YMCA guys. Just make sure that you are able to pull o the scru y-jort look. If you can pass that test, youll have all the ladies after you. Aside from all the Halloween talk, October is also known as breast cancer awareness month. Our beautiful college student DeAndreia Joseph was put into a situation we as college students never imagined that changed her life. Be sure to read her amazing story on how she survived cancer and how it has a ected her. Stay safe this Halloween. Be sure to check your candies ... er drinks too!

Jasmine, I need help with a Halloween costume idea! What ideas do you have? -Vanessa Jones

Laura, what do I do to celebrate Halloween? -Dawson Craig

Jennifer, how slutty is TOO slutty for a Halloween costume? -Jessica Berke

Ryan, Whats a good way to meet new people on campus? - Greg Peneld

Halloween costumes can be just as stressful as nals. Skip the clich looks (you know what Im talking about the Playboy bunny, the cheetah, Superwoman), and go for something creative. Ive made my costumes every year, and they have been successful, especially group costumes! Although people say its too soon! for certain costumes, dont listen. Its never too soon to start partying and getting creative.

Well, it is safe to say that throwing on your costume and hitting the streets for some trick-or-treating is out of the question. Personally, I always spend my Halloween weekends at the clubs. Even if you arent 21, you can always nd a party on the streets with the amount of people that come out dressed for the occasion. If you are of age, what is a better way to spend Halloween thn in a club watching guys dressed as Smurfs break dance?

ough Halloween is a time to let loose (please dont take that term too literally), there is still a way to be sexy and not over the top slutty. A little cleavage there and a little leg there is all you need. Remember, guys like to have room for imagination.

My advice for the longest time has been getting involved. e more stu you do around campus the more people you meet, which opens a lot of doors. Half the people I know at school were complete strangers until I just got the initiative to walk up and introduce myself.

In its 20-year existence, Emos Red River location has become a staple in the Austin music scene. The nrewest baby , but the newest baby in the Emos family is Emos East, opening its doors in August of this year. The venue is off to a healthy start using the reputation of its original location to draw in acts from all different genres. The venue is specifically engineered to cater to live music, keeping acoustics up to par with what owner Frank Hendrix says is an increasingly audio-savvy audience.

SPOTLIGHT
OFF TO A GOOD START!
The Longhorn football season got off to a great start on September 3, with a resounding 34-9 victory over the Rice Owls. What was most impressive was their dominance in the second half, allowing only one field goal, while tacking on three touchdowns. Fozzy Whittaker was the offensive gem, scoring twice. And since the question on everyones mind is how did Garrett Gilbert do? w`ell let the victory do the talking. The most important stat: zero turnovers. Had the game not been well in hand in the second half, the stats could have looked much more gaudy for Gilbert. Still, his 13 completions on 23 attempts is a positive, and he got a late TD toss in to Whittaker. Hopefully, by the time youre reading this, Gilbert will have notched three more victories.
OUR MAN CARRINGTON Carrington Byndom has had a busy few months. He and his girlfriend, Jennifer Luna were subjects of a Study Breaks special in September, and then he was named the Defensive Player of the Game for the opening game against Rice. Go Carrington!

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Fresh Faces. The Longhorn football team played 18 true freshmen against Rice, which was five more than the next closest (Auburn, 13) program playing true freshmen. Jaxon Shipley was the headliner, scoring on a trick play and even rushed the ball three times. Carrington Byndom (see left) was solid with five total tackles, two of them for losses. He also broke up a pass. Malcolm Brown ran the ball 16 times for 87 yards, all in the second half. This freshman class is very, very good.

HOW TO...

words: abby johnston photos: press

CHOOSE A TATTOO
Youve seen them. The butterfly resting on the small of the back, the tribal band hugging the bicep, the trail of stars on the hip snaking down toward, well, you know Bad tattoos happen, but they shouldnt happen to you. Here is the Study Breaks guide to choosing tattoos that you wont be (too) embarrassed to explain to your kids one day.

B EPREPARED TOSPEND

There are a lot of things to skimp on. Food, booze and sunglasses are permissible, but tattoos are not. Cheap prices mean cheap ink, and when it comes things being permanently etched onto your skin, go for quality over discount pricing. While some places may be able to give you a price based on location and size many other shops charge hourly fees, so be prepared to spend. Helpful hint: if you dont whine or wriggle around, you might be able to drop a few dollars off of the price. Also, always remember to tip
24 | OCTOBER 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

RESEARCH YOURARTIST

Lots of tattoo shops take walk ins for small pieces, but if you have a complex or large design you will likely need to make an appointment. Find an artist that specializes in the kind of design that you want. An artist that is familiar with what you are looking for can give better suggestions and tweak your tattoo for the better. Getting to know your artist will also allow you to feel more comfortable telling them exactly what you want. If your stencil isnt up to your standards, have them redo it. You are paying them. They arent the ones with it for the rest of their lives.

THETRAMP STAMPAND No one walks into a shop OTHERRISKYPLACES

and picks something out of a flip book. Your tattoos have to mean something to you - something that will remain significant. Take a moment and think about how your tastes have changed in the last 10 years. What stuck? Keep that in mind when picking your ink. More than something being your favorite song/quote/image at the time, think about things that have had an impact in your life. Definitely dont do anything on a dare or on a whim. If you ever say to yourself, I need to do this now or I never will, it probably isnt a good idea. That location may work for now, but you wont always have the same body. Your job waiting tables may not care but someday you may end up in an office where your arm tattoo must be covered. Regardless of the reason, it is important to think about where you want your tattoos. Ladies, especially if you want kids, make sure that if youre getting any kind of tattoo on your torso it will be in a place where pregnancy will not affect it. Artists will be able to tell you what locations have longevity.

HOW I SURVIVED
A
DeAndreia Joseph Shares Her Personal Story Of Life With Breast Cancer
words: desiree johnson photos: jeff ramirez

s teenagers, girls worry about their hair, friends, the right clothes or the attention of a crush. Its the time when girls are beginning to form their identity, a time that should be free of the stresses of adult life. DeAndreia Josephs teenage experience, was a far cry from typical. When she discovered a lump in her breast at the age of 15, DeAndreia was thrown head rst into a rapidly shifting future. When I was growing up, my mother always recommended that I do self-breast exams because it was something I needed to practice at a young age, DeAndreia said. She didnt anticipate that one of the rst times she would do this, she would detect a problem. When she discovered leakage during her examination, she knew instantly she had to see a doctor. A series of ultrasounds and mammograms revealed she had a lump ectemy that, after further testing, came back benign, or a tumor that doesnt recur or spread to other parts of the body. For now DeAndreia was free of any serious health risks, although she was advised to keep doing her private exams. The Diagnosis Following doctors orders, DeAndreia continued her self exams diligently and at the age of 16 ran into yet another problem.I felt two lumps the size of peas in my breasts, and I knew I had to go back to the doctor. Just like the rst time, one of the lumps returned as benign, but the second lump

came back as malignant, or a tumor that could potentially spread to other parts of the body. At 17, she was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), which is a noninvasive form of breast cancer. When I was diagnosed I was told I could live up to ve years without it becoming invasive, but I wanted it treated regardless. Her next visit included a more complex series of tests. Mammograms, MRIs and ultrasounds helped doctors better understand the nature of DeAndreias case. As a high school student she didnt want to undergo chemotherapy - a process that could potentially rid her of cancer but would have drastic e ects on her body and taken time away from school. e doctors wanted me to wait it out and think it over before I made my decision, but I knew instantly I wanted to have surgery; there was no other option in my eyes. When I initially found out about the fact it was serious enough I had to have some kind of critical treatment I was shocked but I didnt want sympathy from anybody. I knew I was going to be okay, and God was going to take care of me. DeAndreia put on a brave face for concerned family and friends, keeping a positive attitude and trying to focus on the present. I felt that dwelling on the issue wasnt going to correct it or make it disappear, so instead I wanted to face it head on and get to the next course of action. I knew I didnt want to live with this disease.

I just opted to have my double mastectomy.

BREAST CANCER
I Will Survive Now 19, DeAndreia is a breast cancer survivor. She is currently a kinesiology and nursing student and is enjoying college life. Due to her diagnosis at such a young age, she is required to go back for check-ups every six months. Her case still ba es doctors because her family had no genetic history of the illness prior to her sickness, which at a young age is abnormal. DeAndreia doesnt regret having the surgery that helped save her life, and instead she focuses on transitioning into college cancer free. e most inspirational moment she has had since her diagnosis was being surrounded by survivors, family, friends and supporters at her rst Susan G. Komen walk for breast cancer. Seeing people of all ages and backgrounds that shared her experience allowed her to relate and connect. Its brought her comfort. As an aspiring nurse, DeAndreia seeks to promote breast exams for early detection of breast cancer. e best possible advice I can give to anyone who may ever encounter this, whether it be at my age or older, is to be optimistic. A pessimistic attitude wont help. Know that you have a bright future ahead.

IN HER WORDS
My Support System Throughout my whole experience with cancer my biggest support system was my mom and dad. They were there before I was diagnosed and when I was diagnosed they supported me with all of my decisions I made regardless if they approved of them or not. Of course the rest of my family was a big support too; both of my grandmothers came down from Louisiana to take care of me when my parents had to go back to work. My friends who knew about my sickness would constantly call to check on me, some even came to see me and bring me gifts. Family friends also called to check up on me and made short visits. Some of my high school teachers who knew called and texted. When I arrived back at school, they had even organized a basket of all things pink for breast cancer and gave it to me as a welcome back gift. To this day, the teachers I kept in contact with always check up on me, so I guess you could say I had a broad support system, not only from my family but also everyone who was around me or knew me. I really appreciate it because even though I kept a positive outlook on the whole situation having so many people who cared and were concerned was like a breath of fresh air and it also kept my spirits up. Advice For Students The advice I would give to young women my age is to always do self breast examinations and if you dont know what it is to nd out and start doing them. If it wasnt for my mom telling me to do them I wouldnt have found out I had cancer and who knows where I would be today. To the ones who know people who are going through cancer or have had cancer, the biggest thing you can do is keep a positive attitude about the situation because the last thing we want are the people around us to be overly sympathetic with us.

With the type of breast cancer I had, I didnt have to undergo any type of chemotherapy or radiation because it wasnt invasive. I just opted to have my double mastectomy.

In The Pink
ach October there are ambiguous and provocative Facebook statuses. ere are Save the Boobies shirts and bracelets. ere is pink everywhere. October is breast cancer awareness month, but in the midst of these bright and sometimes shocking reminders, we still manage to forget what this means. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. is illness claims the lives of almost 40,000 women annually. Although accounting for only 1 percent of all newly diagnosed cases, nearly 2,000 men were diagnosed in 2010. ese numbers only scratch the surface of those a ected by the disease, discounting the families, friends and loved ones of each victim that su er alongside these women and men, nor do they include the thousands that have already fought to beat this disease and the ones that did not. But ask a breast cancer patient or survivor about their experiences and you will rarely hear a response of a person looking for sympathy. e resilience shown through these struggles, the unsung heroes that have the grace and strength to simply carry on a daily routine while battling this disease exemplify strength and power. ey are our mothers, our teachers, our coworkers, our friends, and they are ghters. It was 12 years ago that I lost my mother to breast cancer. When

Study Breaks gives advice on protecting yourself from breast cancer, giving to the cause and staying in the pink.
diagnosed, she was given six months to live, but, always up to the challenge, she fought through seven years of treatments, including four rounds chemotherapy. Maybe the most remarkable thing was her refusal to let it affect her daily life. Growing up I was surrounded by her fellow patients and survivors that she met with on a weekly basis and never once did it occur to me that these men and women quietly dealt with unimaginable and almost constant pain whether emotional or physical. And my mothers story is not unique. I have never met a patient that showed anything but perfect poise and grace, or heard a story from someone in remission that detailed their pain. Breast cancer awareness month is not designed to draw attention to your own sexuality or the fact that your Facebook status indicates you could be pregnant. So while the inevitable shock campaigns designed to call attention to the issue at hand are going on this October, be sure to remember the roots of what this disease is and why we are taking the time to re ect on it. Use this month to celebrate the lives of those who are currently battling breast cancer and of those who have already defeated it. Use this month to remember those that have lost their lives. Most importantly, use this month to help in the ght against breast cancer.

Did you know?

It is a common misconception that breast cancer only occurs in older women. It affects young women and men, too. Although breast cancer in young people occurs less frequently, it is usually diagnosed much later and the strain is generally much more aggressive. Here are the facts:

Evidence shows that breast cancer before the age of 40 differs biologically from the cases faced by older women. African-American women under the age of 35 have two times as many occurrences of breast cancer than Caucasian women under 35.

Women ages 15 to 54 die more frequently from breast cancer than any other type of cancer.
Survival rates of women younger than 45 are up to ve percent less than any other age group.

Every 14 minutes someone loses their life due to breast cancer.

How To Get Involved

Sometimes its hard to know exactly how to get involved with breast cancer awareness. College students especially can get tied down with other obligations and feel helpless against the cause. However there are many different ways to get involved with various ranges of time and monetary commitments. Race for the Cure The annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure holds races in most major cities across the country. Whether youre a seasoned runner or would rather walk with your friends, this is a fun, interactive way to support the ght against breast cancer. The donations are as little as 35 dollars and if you have more time to commit you can join teams or raise sponsor money. Cant make the Susan G. Komen race? Watch out for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in your area.

Real Men Wear Pink Breast cancer affects men both by association and directly. Sponsored by St. Johns Hospital and the American Cancer Society, Real Men Wear Pink encourages men to wear pink on Fridays in October. Not only will this remind women in their lives to get their annual mammogram but increase awareness about breast cancer in men.

Take it to the web Twitter, Facebook, email, whatever your poison (we know you arent actually taking notes in class), are easy ways to promote awareness of breast cancer during the month of October. Many corporations will offer to donate for likes on their Facebook page, or pledge a certain amount of money based on retweets on Twitter. Be on the lookout for these kind of promotions.

ERIC TESSMER
ustin locals Eric Tessmer Band have been described as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Tom Waits having a picnic on the Dark Side of the Moon. Were not entirely sure what that means, but in a way the ambiguity and mash up of talent describes the bands rambling blues style perfectly. Study Breaks sat down with their fearless leader, Eric Tessmer. Despite two albums and several tours under his belt, he still considers his bandmates his brothers, and his mom is still his biggest fan. Whatisbehindthename? Its a creative expression of divine inspiration- no, actually we just tacked Band to the end of my name. Whatisthebest partofyourmusic? Its hard to say. eres so many aspects of our music that people seem to gravitate towards. Id say for me, its probably the energy.

Melting Faces and Taking Names

Wheredoyougainyour inspirationforsongs? Inspiration for the lyrics de nitely comes from experiences in our lives. We all listen to a massive amount of music and having that many artistic reference points helps when were trying to express ourselves. I am a rm believer in the experiences you endure inspiring the art you create. You write what you know. Howdidyouget intothemusicscene? I moved to Austin on my 19th birthday, and I went to as many blues jams and open mics as I could. I got kicked out a lot for being underage, so I ended up playing guitar in gospel choirs for a spell. After I hit 21, I just played all the time and was somehow able to make a name for myself. Whatmooddoyou trytoputyourcrowdin? We try to melt their faces and

deliver a solid, sonic punch to the baby-maker. Mostly we want you to forget about the static bullshit in your life for a few hours and just let your hair down. We do. Whatisyourlifelikewhen youarenotmakingmusic? On tour: when were not making music were in the van driving to the next city, laughing about whatever stupid jokes we make up, listening to music, covering the business end of things and updating Twitter with random thoughts on life. Home in Austin: pretty chill. I drive around in my ugly, old 49 International pickup, listen to records, eat Mexican food and hang out with my friends. However, its rare that Im not making music. Howdidyouguysstart playingtogether? Danny and I started playing together a few years ago when I was searching for a permanent

bass player, and we immediately clicked. He was playing fulltime with the Mother Truckers at the time and they had slowed down their touring schedule and he was looking for something to pick up the slack. Worked out pretty well for everyone. Rob started with us in March. He was actually Dannys roommate, and wed been looking for a new drummer and after a whole lot of wrong drummers, Danny suggested Rob and he blew us away. Never looked back.

onstantly balancing work and play in Hollywood, this Jewish rapper is managing to keep focused. Kosha talked with Study Breaks about SXSW, his new EP and his ass-kicking mentality. Whatatmospheredoyou bringtoyourliveshows? I bring friendly vibes but an ass kicking mentality. ink of it as the kid in class who doesnt always get good grades but tries really hard and sits up in the front of the class. Im not the kid that just walks in and always kills it and never studies. I really try to come early to the show set up, greet everyone, escort them to the front to enjoy and interact, and then wish them well at the end of the night. Howisitworkingsoloversusrecordingwithother artists,likeyourcollaborationwithC-RayzWalz? Solo lets me breathe and create. I love it when all pressure rides on me. Gina and e Garage Sale and Beverly Dillz were really that. Me and C Rayz crushed an album together, but his name helped create so much buzz for the project. WhenIwasdoingresearch,Inoticedafew timesthatyournamewas spelledKo$ha.Didke$ha stealthisfromyou? Id love to work with Ke$ha based on that. I do want to say that my homegirl Lauren Morris was the keytarist for her and I have a super crush on her, but she lives in Nashville and has half of her head shaved. Oy vey. Tellmethestorybehind thetitleofyourlatestEP, Gina and the Garage Sale. I recorded this in LA. It was simply the Garage Sale, but we

decided to add more to it. We recorded near 20 songs, and broke it down to nine songs with a six song free sampler. During the time of recording, Gina and I were speaking about all these things we were going to do and I had made all kinds of fresh songs. It was around Halloween. I do remember that we spoke for nearly 15 minutes, and it was really late. I heard she passed away about 36 hours later from an overdose. I had to go to Vegas for a friends wedding that weekend and found out when I got back. Whatsparkedyour movetoLA? I gure if a change of scenery could do it for anyone, why not be around like minded people who are all shooting for the stars. Im tired of being around nonlike minded people who dont think they deserve everything the world has instore for you. I believe that I can not only change myself, but really make an impact on the entire world from here. Hollywood is one hell of a place, heavenly speaking. Whatkindofin uence doesyourfaithhaveon yourmusic? Being a Jew is my soul, blood, spirit and lastly religion. Kosha Dillz says it all in the name and so many people forget that its hard to be yourself enough even if you have your own real name as your stage name. My Jewish music is cutting edge, spiritual and delivers a point in a way that crosses over to the general public in a way no one has ever seen. I think my faith in music helps people understand di erently and for the better. ats why so many people are excited about it. No one knows what to expect, although they know its something Jewish.

Country And Then Some
Although Texas boy Ryan Beaver is a country singer who describes his music as countryoriented with spices of blues, rock and americana, this isnt your dads country music. Id love to hear Cee Lo Green remix some of my stu , said Beaver, who revealed a love for Nirvana, Motown and Austin indie-rock venue e Parish. Taleoftwocities Every two months, Beaver travels up to Nashville to write and network with some of country musics best musicians and writers. Even though his roots are rmly in Austin, the saying you cant be a hero in your own hometown rings true for him as he loves to travel and play around the country. He may be bashful about his local

success, but Beaver has already had the opportunity to write and perform with some of his idols including Robert Earl Keen, Randy Rogers, Radney Foster and Wade Bowen. Although he claim that everything thats happened in my career has been fateful and lucky, his hard work and dedication to the craft cant be ignored. I dont love anything more than writing a song - it never gets old, he said. SophomoreSuccess Beaver feels that his second album, Constant, is a much better, more mature product than his debut, Under e Neons. As you go and play, you learn something from every gig and Ive played hundreds of gigs between recordings, he said.

My guitar work has gotten better, and the way I approach and think about songs and how Im more open really comes through. Beaver, who says with a laugh that he has caught grief for his name all his life, claims that you may walk out of a venue and not remember my rst name, but youre going to remember my last. After hearing his music, youre certain to remember his sound.

MTVs Americas Best Dance Crew Winners Season 5 Champions, Poreotics, Break It Down On Living Life As Americas Best Dance Crew
looked promising. Enter Americas Best Dance Crew. On The Way To The Top Poreotics was awarded a standing ovation was awarded after their initial audition for Americas Best Dance Crew and, sure enough, they landed a spot in the fth season series. Its clear as to why they quickly became fans favorites. With the shades, popping with precision, and comical yet intricate choreography, Poreotics was everything viewers wanted in a dance crew and went hard from episode to episode. Experts in popping and tutting, Poreotics were known as dancing robots with a mischievous side in every routine. They Like Chicken, Not Beef To become Americas Best Dance Crew was no easy feat. Because this was their rst time performing together with these six members, they had to quickly adapt to everybodys habitsannoying or not. Being on the show was when they got the closest and learned the most from each other. For the three months of taping, Poreotics shacked up in a hotel with eight other crews and were constantly around one another despite the competition between crews. One would think there would be beef between crews as they all have their eyes on the prize, but it turned out that season ve was one of the friendliest seasons, competition-wise. See, we dont like beef. We like chicken, Charles joked.

o say that Poreotics is on re is an understatement. It has been a year since they were crowned the champions of Americas Best Dance Crew and ever since taking the coveted title, life has turned upside down for these six dancing masterminds. From globetrotting around every major international city to dancing in Justin Biebers Somebody To Love music video, Poreotics has taken a passion of theirs into the dream career. Before ABDC ough Matt Dumbo Nguyen, Can Nguyen, and Charles Nguyen originally formed Poreotics back in December 2007, the six members featured on Americas Best Dance Crew never actually performed all together until auditions for the show. Shortly after the original three members collaborated, Justin Jet Li Valles and Lawrence Law Devera joined the crew. In 2009, Chad Mataye substituted Jet Li in the 2009 Hip-Hop Dance Championships. After taking rst place, Chad was asked to permanently join Poreotics. Dance has always been a part of every members life before the creation of Poreotics. ey have done everything from explosive performances on Americas Got Talent to humble beginnings with crews like PAC Modern Dance Troupe in California where much of their talent came from. It wasnt until after they took home the winning title at the Hip Hop Dance Championships that they decided a future in dancing

Rocketing to Stardom with Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars Fame and recognition came shortly after taking home the grand prize of $10,000 and title of Americas Best Dance Crew. ey took the dance world by storm and continued to relentlessly make it known that they are clear winners and not just by ABDCs standards. In January, after winning ABDC, Poreotics took home rst place at the 2010 Hip Hop Internationals, placing rst in the U.S division and second in the World division. It didnt stop there. Poreotics, in their uniform stunna shades, made an appearance in Justin Biebers Somebody to Love music video with Usher. It was a really great opportunity for us, especially because we got to reunite with other ABDC alumni. We arent like Justin Bieber fanatics, but it was cool being able to work with him, said Dumbo. ey continued to work with the Biebs as his opening act in Manila, Philippines. Most recently, they appeared as the hanky panky masked monkeys in Bruno Marss e Lazy Song music video. Theres No Place Like Home Not only did Poreotics rub elbows with todays most adored artists, but the fame that followed ABDC took them everywhere around the world from California to Canada, Russia, Singapore and even South Africa. Whether they were visiting these international destinations to perform or teach a dance workshop, the guys made time to experience each culture. Where was their favorite country? Australia, de nitely. e accents, people, and parties it was a lot of fun, the crew said. ough theyve been touring the world, they still make time for home back in the Golden State, even if its just for ten hours, to take a break from the life as a celebrity. Weve been really blessed to have this experience and are extremely grateful. Its all the fans, too. Without the fans, we wouldnt be doing what we love to do, said Dumbo.

25 lucky students were picked from a lottery to recieve a private group lesson from Poreotics member, Chad Mayate.

DANCE CREW
Let ProDgy show you swag.

words: ngoc nguyen photos provided by: prodgy

All love for this crew.

Break it down

ProDgy: Houstons break through dance crew.

No I In Team, No I In ProDgy
roDgy Dance Crew may look like the typical dance crew, but they do not share the same motive as the others. ProDgy started during high school with three friends who shared a main interest of dancing. Philip Chen, Tim Nguyen, and Taylor Vo, all 22years old, are currently students at the University of Houston that have been leading the crew from their early teenage years to now.
From Sidewalks to Stages ProDgy rst got their start from goo ng around the school hallways and sidewalks. With every free moment they danced. It wasnt until 2007 when they made their rst public appearance dancing as a crew at a Buddhist temple. Since then the crew has performed at weddings, churches or temple festivals and

entered a few dancing competitions. Unlike many other rising dance crews in the south, ProDgy doesnt have intentions of making dance a career but rather as a passion pursed. We have the passion to dance like any crews but not to make it a career, said dance member Taylor Vo. A Well-Rounded Dance Crew In uenced by YouTube videos and B-Boy Lilou, a French breakdancer, ProDgy de ned their style of dance to be well-rounded ,incorporating all styles of hip-hop and breakdancing. Ive taken ballet, hip-hop and modern dance classes to gain ideas and create into our own style, Vo said. ough they trained themselves through enrolling in dance classes, many hours were spent watching and mimicking dance moves from Korean dancers that they discovered on the internet.

Family and Family ProDgy doesnt get much support from their family, but theyve found a family environment among each other. Our parents think we should be putting our time into studying. We tried to explain to them that its just a hobby, but it still caused tension to the group forcing some to rethink their commitment to the crew, Vo said. But we always have a passion for dancing; we just cant completely stop. Whether its helping each other perfect dance techniques or just spending time together, ProDgy found their support in each other taking their individual talents into a complete dance force.

COLOR MY WORLD
Mixing young, vibrant colors with personal home touches gave Christina a place to stay grounded while in college. Christinas room is reminiscent of a nice day at the park. The vibrant color schemes of pinks, greens, and purples give a new refreshing aura that screams anything but dull. She prides herself on being down to earth and embodying a youthful persona that she could express in her room. She values her firm morals, and enjoying time with her family and friends. Take a peak into a splash of color with just the right amount of playfulness.

What was your inspiration for decorating your room?

Christina Perez, 20 Hometown:Killeen Major:Sociology

What is one item in your room that best describes you?

My pillow pets. It shows that I am still young on the inside. It brings out my inner child that I hope I will never lose.

I am a girly girl. I love Disney cartoons, and if it was not a weird thing for a 20 year old to do, I would probably still play with dolls! I wanted to make my room express my child like qualities while maintaining a college atmosphere.

How close are you to campus? How do you like that?

I am only 10 minutes away from campus. Being so close is amazing! Tra c is not bad, and if I wake up late, I can still make it to class in minutes.

What is one thing you will change differently next year when decorating your room?
I want to make my room look more spacious. My room is so small now, but I wanted it to be cute at the same time. By decorating and adding extra furniture, I had no way of walking around my room. Next year my room is bigger, but I will focus more on the decorating aspect and not clutter my room with extra furniture.

Zebra picture holder cork board hobbylobby.com $12/$20

Pillow pet: Mall Kiosks small for $15 and big for $25

How is your color scheme a reection of you?

My color scheme is bright and colorful, and it re ects me as a happy and outgoing person.

MYPLACE

What was the vibe you were trying to achieve when decorating?
I wanted a vibe that would make people feel at home and young when they entered my room. Also a vibe that would make people smile because of all the colors I have in my room.

If there was one thing you could put in here that you dont already have what would it be? Why?
I would want more decorations on my wall and more wall hangers, so I wouldnt have to pack everything so tightly in my closet.

ItsYourPersonal Sex-LifeWithYourself.
Masturbation: The Naughtiest (And Happiest!) Trick Of All.
From the days of American Pie, its been labeled a no-no. Today, lets try something different. Ok, people. Lets talk. Its the naughty no-no and the thing apparently only people who cant get laid do: masturbation, flicking the bean, flogging the molly, jacking off, diddling your DJ, and answering the bone-a-phone. You get the point. Im going to tell you some points about the deliciousness that is self-love and perhaps, one day we will live in a world where society isnt afraid to discuss and engage in this happiest of activities.

HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

hen were having sex with ourselves, questions such as Am I big enough? or Am I wet enough? dont often cross our minds, do they? How many times have you masturbated and thought: Oh my dang, I didnt shave my legs this morning? or Bollocks, I havent brushed my teeth yet? You dont care if you havent brushed your teeth yet, how busted your hair looks, or if youre making farm animal noises.

For years, children and adults alike were told that masturbating can cause blindness, acne, insanity, and that its dirty. If its dirty down south, then take a bath. Playing with yourself will not cause premature death, stupidity, or loss of hearing. (Unless you manage to ejaculate in your own ear, I suppose.)

Milla Impola Major:Psychology, SexualHealthPeerEducator Hometown:Vihti,Finland

TOYS, TOYS, TOYS

Every household item that even slightly resembles the shape of a penis has somewhere been used as a sex toy. ink cucumbers, bananas (if youre gonna bang a fruit, put a condom on it due to bacteria), shampoo bottles, ends of hairbrushes, and especially things that vibrate such as electric toothbrushes. Now while all these may get you o , we live in a fantastical, magical world of sex toys. Try babeland.com. And guys, if you havent bought a Fleshlight yet, what are you waiting for? You can even build a customized one! Holla, No need to stick your penis in a pie anymore.

CANT SLEEP?
Masturbation helps you relax and eases the transition from awake to asleep.

And as with any sex toy, they are not regulated for safety. Make sure your toy isnt made with phthalates, a family of chemicals used to make plastic soft, and is toxic. While they were banned in childrens toys, apparently what we use to have sex with doesnt matter. Just look for the ones that are phthalate-free.

SCHOOL=STRESS
Finals week stress. Masturbation stress relief. Just try and make it to your nal.

LISTEN
If you cant get yourself o , how can you really expect anyone else to do so either? When you know what you like, then you can tell someone else what you like. Yummy. Your sex life is your sex life. Please dont ever tell a signi cant other these following words:

I am banging you, there is no need for masturbation. If you like some kind of porn, say porn with super old people or anime porn, and youre afraid to tell your partner, you dont have to! Its your personal sex-life with yourself. Embrace it. Explore di erent kinds of porn, di erent positions, di erent places (Keep in mind there are places where masturbation is inappropriate, and illegal for that matter.) And if you still feel that masturbating isnt for you, thats cool too, but dont ever let anyone tell you its dirty. Unless youre like Quagmire because you just discovered nternet porn and you cant make it to class or work, theres no such thing as masturbating too much.

THINK CRITICALLY
If you have roommates, why is it that we are often way embarrassed if a roommate sees us rubbing one out than if were having sex with another person?

MATCH THIS LOOK

ROMPER: $39.99
Wearing a pink romper is perfect for the upcoming fall weather. Pair it with a belt for a little extra touch, and youve got a simple, yet, chic outt. www.modcloth.com

FEATHER EARRINGS: Feather hair extensions are out. And by out, we mean you need them out of your hair. Boost your outt with a little pizazz and add pink feather earrings. (Trust us, wearing only one will turn heads. In a good way.) SCARF: Stay trendy this fall with a layered pink scarf.

ROSE EARRINGS: These earrings are totally sweet, just make sure you wear them with the right outt.

PINK JEANS: What is better than a pair of white-washed pink jeans? Try anything.

SHOES: $49
If your outt is clearly in any shade of pink, make sure your shoes are not entirely matching. Adding an accent of pink on the very bottom Romper: of your outt will denitely pull NEED your outt together. www.simplysoles.com

WHAT TO WEAR WITH PINK

From the Experts at KEMBREL.com
words: manya scheps kembrel.com photos: press

GOLD Gold clutch by Stephanie Johnson, $30

When your June glow transforms to July sunkissed and then August leather, youll want to highlight that sparkle with some bright colors. Gold pairs perfectly with hot pink anything, and will catch the light in a dark bar or in a sunlit classroom.

DARK GREEN Emerald earrings on Fantasy Jewelry Box, $65

Even when its the March-traditional tint of cheap beer, emerald is the color of elegance. And fake emerald is the color of a broke sensible girl who wants to feel like Angelina as she prances around in soft pink hues.

GREY Double Sash Belt by Halston Heritage, $107

Grey and carnation is a classic combo, but it gets real soft-lump-of-blah real fast. Keep it youthful with edgy accessories. And, obviously, an anti-soft-lump-of-blah exercise regimen.

CERULEAN Ruched Sleeve Knit Blazer by Ellison, $52

Just like momma taught you when it comes to getting your way, the trick to colorblocking is to balance demanding yells with sensitive whispers. A deep blue will take sheer pink to a whole new level without taking you to dangerous Lisa Frank palette territory.

RAINBOOTS: Pink rain boots are okay... when its raining.

CREAM New World Order Tote by Something Else, $43

Pick a pink, any pink. What works with fuschia? Cream. Neon? Cream. Coral? Cream. Light thulian? Thanks Wikipedia, I dont know what that is. But the answer is cream.

PINK HAIR: Unless youre Nicki Minaj, stay away from pink dye.

SAGE Fluxus Nomad Scarf by Pink Mascara, $48

Sage and dusty rose conjures up images of a 1970s wedding cake-themed retirement home but, I promise you, it can work. The key is to keep them both as accents, and let the main dish of the outt stay neutral. Leave the bold saturated colors for grammies closet.

COLD

HELLO KITTY SHIRT: Dont know why you would ever put this on your body over the age of 10.

BLACK Sheer Tights by Urban Outtters, $12

Black and pink gets a bad rap, but thats only because its usually done in a weird low-rent fantasy playmate way thats like, just, no. Too much. Go home and change. Into a much more subtle combination of the two with lots of sheer. Thats grown-up sexy.

LIGHT YELLOW Butter Nail Polish by American Apparel, $6

Brights might be summer-only, but pastels are forever. Light pink + light yellow nails. It looks so sweet, dont be surprised if you get confused for a cupcake.

BACON AUSTIN
The smell of bacon is sure to stimulate your senses. Study Breaks approved, you dont want to miss out on this new restaurant. Trust us, everything is better with Bacon.
ere is the no brainer: everyone loves bacon, and life is better with bacon. Now place these two great ideas with the owners of Bacon Austin, and youve got yourself perfection. The great minds of Austinite Jed Taylor and Tech Raider alumni Ryan Reynolds, have set the rivalries aside to make a place where fans can meet for one love (other than football).

you want. ey just have one, and its usually pretty limp.

Did you have any worries when opening the restaurant?

Ive designed numerous bars and restaurants but have never stood on this side as an owner. One, nding a kitchen sta . Two, making sure our concept is conveyed with every order. ree, getting the word out. JT: We worried about getting our doors open fast enough! Austin has made us feel very welcome with selling out of food twice in our rst opening weekend. We prepped for 600 for a restaurant that only holds 70. With the recent opening in September, the restaurant was a huge hit. e parking lot was lled with customers who were receiving free shirts and a free taste testing for all who came out. e menu includes Double Grind Burger, Bacon Wa es, and even breakfast tacos.

RR: Of course.

How did the idea for Bacon start?

JT: Zac Bryant General Manag-

er at Bacon, returned from California and called me to come over and talk, talk bacon. From there it was do traditional fresh foods, but experiment with new bacon dishes nightly.

Grind. We grind together all natural black angus and bacon fresh everyday. By far the juiciest, tastiest burger Ive ever had, all without being greasy. For breakfast, Id recommend the chicken n wa es. I know, wheres the bacon? Just wait! We brine the all natural chicken breasts 24 hours, then when ordered, lightly dust with seasoned our, dip in buttermilk, then lightly coat it again with seasoned our before frying to perfection and serve a top a golden fresh made wa e. Heres the bacon: at Bacon, you have the option of getting a Bacon Wa e, where we put two strips of our own sliced bacon into the wa e.

What is different about Bacon Austin from any other restaurant?

We listen, and because we arent owned by some franchise, we pride ourselves in hearing Austins ideas. Bacon Austin isnt some fad, its really great healthy food that you want to eat all the time.

JT: Because there are so many great dishes that already have bacon in them, we decided to perfect those dishes. We knew that we could make our own bacon, cut our own thickness and make our own avors. No one ever asks want kind of bacon

Why did you decide Bacon as the main ingredient for customers?

JT:

Top 5 reasons you love bacon

1 Bacon + Football = Win 2 Bacon + Football +

Beer = #Winning
3 The smell of it makes you smile. 4 It brings families together. 5 Take a bite, and ask your tummy.

What dish would you recommend for customers and why?

TABBEDOUT
TOP5ReasonsToHaveTabbedoutOnYourPhone
CONVENIENCE! You no longer have to wait for the bar or restaurant staff to bring you your tab. You simply use your phone and pay whenever you want, wherever you are. SECURITY! Once you encrypt your card with the Tabbedout mobile app, you no longer need to give your credit card to open a tab, reducing identity theft exposure and removing the hassle of dealing with a forgotten credit card. CONTROL! Tabbedout is the only mobile payment application that gives you real-time visibility into your tab activity. This level of control minimizes surprises and bad customer experiences.

FreeMobileApp
words: jasmine vallejo photos: tabbedout

BecauseMissingOutOnAGoodTimeIsNeverGood Weve all done it. Weve forgotten our credit cards for dinner or a night out on the town, and it leaves us with the $10 in our pocket we luckily found. That will pay for about three shots, and that doesnt sound pleasant. Having Tabbedout is a blessing in disguise.
SPLIT CHECKS! Its annoying when you are with a group of six, and the check cant be split. With Tabbedout, you can split the tab and pay a portion while your friends pay however they prefer, whether it be Tabbedout, cash, credit, or debit. THE PARTY DOESNT STOP! Who says the party stops once you spend the only cash in your pocket? Having Tabbedout allows you to party until your bank account says to stop.

itting in a restaurant, you wait for your waiter to come back and hand you your tab. Youre on a date, and its fteen minutes until your movie starts. Your waiter has taken thirty minutes to re ll your drink, so you can only imagine how long it will take to get your check. Sound familiar? So what happens next? Do you wait it out? Times before, you would. Now, you pay using Tabbedout. e easiest and fastest way to pay your tab and move along to your next event. What is Tabbedout? Tabbed Out is the cure for forgotten credit cards and missing out on a good time. e free Tabbedout app for iPhone and Android lets you open a tab with your phone, view your tab in real-time and pay the tab anytime, anywhere, so you can move along with the party.

Where did the idea come from? Eight years ago, Tabbedout co-founder and CEO Rick Orr found himself waiting nearly an hour to close out his bill at a restaurant. Orr realized there had to be a better way to improve the payment processboth for patrons and merchants at bars and restaurants. Hence, the idea for Tabbedout was born. How can you pay through your phone? Simply download Tabbedout and enter in your credit card into the secure app. From there, nd the bar or restaurant you want to open your tab at, select it and hit open tab. Show your server the ve digit code that appears on the app screen and order as you normally would. When you are ready to close your tab, simply hit pay tab enter in the tip amount and go! And, if you forget to close your tab, you can do it from anywhere no need to be in the bar or restaurant to do it.
