Attitude of Gratitude

Examples of Bad Attitudes 1. Cain & Abel - Genesis 4 a. Cain was first born & Abel 2nd b. Cain was crop farmer & Abel tended the herds c. Cain brought some of the fruits of his labor while Abel brought the first fruits d. Lord looked with favor on Abel, not on Cain e. Cain became angry Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." f. Cains bad attitude i. Pouting ii. Jealousy g. Result Lord punished/cursed Cain 2. Pharaoh From the book of Exodus a. Moses was trying to rescue the Israelites from the slave labor of Egypt b. Pharaoh was to prideful to allow them to leave Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go." c. God decides to show his might at the expense of Pharaoh through the plagues d. God hardens the heart of Pharaoh so that he will not let the Israelites go until the last plague. e. Pharaoh is broken & allows the Israelites to leave f. Second guesses himself and pursues loses his army Pharaoh's chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea. g. Pharaohs bad attitude i. Pride & hard heart (unwillingness to change) ii. Ungrateful for the work of the Israelites h. Result basically loses everything 3. Israelites in the dessert a. A nation that was just rescued from slavery & saw Gods power b. Marching through the desert to the promise land c. Their attitude turns sour on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, "If only we had died by the LORD's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death." d. Lord hears their grumbling & rains down manna from heaven e. Israel eats manna for 40 years

f. They got sick of the manna and grumbled about that g. Then they stop at a mountain and wait for Moses to get 10 commandments h. They get impatient & build a golden calf i. Israels bad attitude i. Complaining/ungrateful stiff-necked ii. Impatient iii. Entitled j. Result none of the original Israelites make it to the promised land & their desert experiences was prolonged Examples of a Good Attitude 1. Apostle Paul a. Originally Saul b. Out to destroy church c. Converted to Paul d. Faced many hardships - And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. e. Attitude i. Humble - However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given methe task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. ii. Grateful Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. iii. Committed I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. iv. Joyful After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Conclusion Your attitude is not a result of your circumstances. A man chooses his attitude. Your choice can be to have a great attitude and improve your circumstances or a sour attitude which makes things worse.
