CourseDescriptionandGoals ThiscourseservesasanintroductiontotheoriesandprinciplesofEnglishlanguageteaching, languageacquisition,andareviewofvariousmethodsandapproachesusedinlanguage teaching,leadingtoanunderstandingofthedevelopmentofthecommunicativeapproach. ProvidesopportunitiesforpeerteachingandrequiresobservationofEnglishlanguage classes,alongwithtutoringorteachingofEnglishtononnativespeakers.Thegoalsofthis courseinclude: 1. TointroducestudentstotheessentialtheoriesandconceptsofEnglishLanguage Teaching 2. TofamiliarizestudentswiththeCommunicativeApproachestoTeachingand relationtopreviousteachingapproaches 3. Toprovideclassroomexperiencethroughobservation,tutoring,andteaching segmentsoftheELTIcourse 4. Tointroducethebasicsoflessonplanning 5. Regularattendanceisessentialinordertobenefitfrom theinteractionalnatureofthiscourse.Studentsareexpectedtoreadalloftheassignedtexts beforeclassandparticipateactively.Studentswhomustmissclassareresponsiblefor informingtheinstructorandworkingwithaclassmatetomakeupforthematerialmissed. tutoring/teachingaboutfourtimespermonth,youwillonlywriteupyoursessionand reflectionondetailsonceamonth)however,youneedtokeepalogofyourweeklytutorial activities(notewhenyoumetwithyourtutee,whatyoucovered,etc.)and allmaterialsyou used inaoneinchringbinder.Itshouldlookorganizedandnotsimplyhaphazardlythrown together.Imayaskyousporadicallytosubmitthisbinder. 4.DiscussionBoardPostings.Postingonetutoriallogwithgeneralandspecificquestion forclassmatesunderDiscussionBoardandcommentingon/respondingtotutoriallogs submittedbytwoclassmatesduringtwootherpostingcycles. 5.TeachingSegmentandActivityforClass.Oneshortclasstopictobetaughtto classmates.Thisshouldengageclassmatesmoreinalearningactivityratherthana lecture/presentation. 6. LibraryBasedResearchPaperonAspectsCoveredinELTI. Thisisaresearchpaper reviewing68journalarticlesorbookchaptersonatopicofyourchoiceintheAPAstyle. Selectionofthetopicisdueon10/5(tobeemailedforinstructorsapproval).By11/2, submitahardcopyofyourresourcesandalsopostittoDiscussionBoardunder LibraryBasedResearchPaperResources.Thefinalpaperisdueon12/7. Allwrittenassignmentsmustbe doublespaced,notsingle or1.5spaced.Besurethat youhave1"marginsonallsides.Thereshouldbepagenumbersoneverypageafter page1.
