Bring your family and friends and reserve a table for 8 or more.
To reserve your table, call Bill at 503-255-7171 before Sunday. Celebrate together & help the parish out by patronizing our 68-year- old tradition of homemade Italian sauce, spaghetti and hand-rolled meatballs. Nothing frozenall fresh! Vegetarian sauce available, too.

Volunteer Sign up sheets for the dinnerand the many behind-

the-scenes prep activitiesare on tables in the foyer. We can all sign up for something. It is our community effort to keep our parish alive and well, so please volunteer a shift to carry it to success. Can you roll meatballs? serve a table? wash a pot? We need you. No kidding. We NEED you.

Liturgy Update: Thank you to Bari Colombari for the excellent

update on what to expect for the changes in our Liturgy starting Nov. 27, the first Sunday of Advent. As a matter of fact, one of the retired Jesuits in attendance said that this was the best presentation on the changes that he has ever heard! We were certainly happy and impressed. Bari will give this same talk on Monday, Oct. 3, 7- 8:30pm at Holy Family Parish as part of the Vicariate preparation for the changes to come. Sixweek Bible study returns Thursday, Oct. 6 in the
Paulist Center Chapel from 10:30 to 12noon. Women in the Bible: Why Do They Matter? Please bring your Bibles.

Vatican II Series: Prior to Vatican II, those of us who are older lived
with many donts. When Vatican II came (1963-65), we felt the Holy Spirit breath life into the people of God. Why was change important? Are we continuing the mission of the Holy Spirit? Should we be concerned? Vatican II: Before and After a 4-part series: Oct. 16, Sunday, 12:101:30pm, Professor James Harrison (MA/History, MA/Pastoral Ministry) will begin the series with the history of why the council was necessary. (Parish Breakfast in Carvlin Hall prior to the presentation in the Church) Oct. 23, Sunday, 12:10-1:30pm, Steve Martino (Masters of Divinity) will discuss the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. The way it was and what it was suppose to become. (Soup will be served prior to the presentation in Carvlin Hall) Nov. 6, Sunday, 12:10-1:30pm, Claire Woodruff (MA/Rel. Ed) will discuss the mission of the Laity (we, the people of God). What could we do before the council and what we are commissioned to do now. (Soup will be served prior to the presentation in Carvlin Hall) Nov. 13, Sunday, 12:10-1:30pm, Dr. Tom Welch (MA/Pastoral Ministry) will discuss the Church in the Modern World what the council envisionedIs it happening? (Soup will be served prior to the presentation in Carvlin Hall).

Get Ready! Halloween party, Oct. 30, Carvlin Hall, 11:301:30pm. Karaoke for all ages, plus food and games! Homeless Outreach Classes: Some parishioners are addressing
the issue of homelessness in our neighborhood. Please join us if you can at 11:30am (right after the 10:30 Mass) today, October 2nd) in the Paulist Center. We will continue to meet each Sunday at 11:30am for the month of October If you cannot be present, you might want to join us in spirit by engaging in some of the practices we shall be trying. Paul Schroeder, a local civic leader, composed them and will join us on occasion for our discussions. We shall be putting a practice in the bulletin for the next several weeks. Here is the first practice: Compassionate Seeing Make it a practice this week to hold eye contact a little longer than you ordinarily would with one person each day. Try to find something in that persons face you hadnt seen before. Smile. Notice what you feel, what comes up for you.

SPNeris 100-Year Anniversary: Come learn about what's being

planned for the St Philip Neri 100yr Anniversary Oct. 16, after Mass at 11:45am in the St Paul Room of the Paulist Center. Bring ideas, give feedback, volunteer to plan. The anniversary year starts May 2012. Come join us!

Vatican City: Looking at the centuries-old buildings and palaces,

not many people would know that the Vatican has become a techie paradise, a wonderland of modern equipment and know-how. For instance, the Vatican Library is using NASA technology to digitize its treasures. Called Flexible Image Transport System, the digital file format is standard among the world's astronomers for storing, sending and manipulating images. The library is using the format to digitize some 80,000 manuscripts because the files will be readable long into the future, avoiding the risk of the technology becoming obsolete. The Vatican Library reopened in 2010 completely revamped with Wi-Fi for scholars and visitor badges tagged with RFID tracking chips. The radio frequency identification chips are already embedded in many of the library's open holdings so volumes can be found and re-shelved more easily. The Vatican's 1300+ page 2010 yearbook is filled with reports on the day-to-day activities as well as special projects begun or completed by every Vatican congregation, council, commission and office. Andthe Swiss Guards, equipped with historic halberdsare now trained in the latest in personal defense techniques. All 110 soldiers took a course last year in the Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, self- defense strategy developed in the United States for security officers to "control and stabilize" unarmed and noncompliant aggressors.

Grief Recovery Weekend: Are you or someone you love grieving

the loss of a spouse from a death, divorce or permanent separation? A Beginning Experience Weekend can help heal the pain of such a loss. The next one will be October 1416, Friday evening until Sunday afternoon in Milwaukie, near Clackamas Town Center. For more information, please call Ron at 503-385-6478 or Margi at 503- 881-0934.

Reconnect with the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus: Were you

taught by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) at St. Rose, St. Charles, St. Rita, Holy Family or Holy Child Academy? The Sisters are hosting an Appreciation Mass and Reception at St. Rose Church in Portland on Sunday, October 23, at 12:15 pm. We welcome the opportunity to reconnect and reminisce with former students, teachers, and friends. If you were taught by the SHCJ, please join us on October 23! RSVP to Sandy Lovascio at slovascio@shcj.org or call 610-626-1400, x301. To learn more about the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, visit our website at www.shcj.org/american.

parish community whom we might never, or rarely, see at our Sunday Mass. These are parishioners who live in care facilities, or are at home, and are not able to get out to come to Mass at the church. You may know some of these about twelve men and women yourselves; and are perhaps already visiting them. This care of our brothers and sisters who are sick and/or elderly, is such an important part of our love for one another here at St. Philip Neri. They each have wonderful stories to tell of their sometimes lifelong connections with the parish. Their loyal support of the community is an inspiration to me as I listen to them. Perhaps some of you might want to make connections with one or more of them, if you arent already doing so. It would be such a wonderful kindness for them, and an inspiration for you. Perhaps you can arrange to take Holy Communion to them; and/or take along a bulletin to share with them so that they will be able to keep in touch with the parish even when they cant come be with us on Sunday. I would be happy to put you in touch with some of these, our brothers and sisters, if you want to give me a call, or send me an email. Then you might contact them to see if they would like to have you come by for a visit at a particular time. It is a nice courtesy to ask if they want to make an appointment for a particular time, and then they can look forward to a visit. ometimes we on the staff dont know about some members of the parish who are homebound, or in a care facility, because no one has contacted us. So, if you know of someone who has a connection to St. Philips, and cant get out, please give us a call, or drop a note to us. [see the front of the bulletin] We would appreciate that. Or, if you suddenly are not able to come to Mass because of illness, please let us know. I know that I have a hard time with names, but remember faces, and really appreciate hearing from you. I might notice that a familiar face is suddenly not here for a little while, but not know if they are sick, or otherwise unable to come to church, and would like a visit. This larger community of men and women form an on-going part of our parish that we can keep in touch with. It is a part of our responsibility in charity to one another, and also a real pleasure to know that we can make a difference with a simple visit or phone call to one of our brothers or sisters in the Lord.
