Nutrition Jessica Jun Mrs. McCullough Physical Education 10 August 2011 Nutrition To have a healthy body and life, we need nutrition. So what is nutrition? Nutrition is the study of foods and how they nourish the body. Scientists have identified forty-five to fifty different nutrients. These nutrients can be divided into six groups-fat, protein, vitamin, carbohydrate, water and minerals. For a person to live, a person needs all these six different types of nutrients in order live a healthy life. The nutrient carbohydrate is one of main nutrients we need. You can find carbohydrates in vegetables, whole grain breads and sugar. Carbohydrate should be 15% or less of the total calories in your diet. For example juices contain carbohydrates and also vitamin. Simple carbohydrates: These are also called simple sugars. Simple sugars are found in refined sugars, like the white sugar you'd find in a sugar bowl. Fibre is a type of complex carbohydrates that your body cannot digest. Fibre sources helps control blood sugar and may also lower cholesterol. Also, they help to reduce the risk of colon cancer and maintain bowel function. Some good sources of fibre come from oatmeals, carrots and barley. Another type of nutrition is fat. Fat is the bodys major storage system. When our body doesnt use the food we eat or drink, the body stores it into fat for later use. Some fat is necessary to keep healthy skin, hair, and nails. But, in general, most people in the United States consume

Nutrition too much fat which can lead to heart diseases, obesity, diabetes and many other health problems. Not all fats are created equal. Saturated fats are the least healthy and tend to increase the level of cholesterol in your blood. Foods like butter, some margarine, palm oil and shortening has high level of saturated fat, so you should limit the amount you consume. Unsaturated fats reduce blood cholesterol when they replace saturated fats in the diet. There are two types of fat monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fats are good cholesterol that protects the heart attacks, in the blood, so in a way they can be considered as a healthy diet. Olive and canola oils, peanut butter and nuts can be particularly part of a healthy nutrition. Polyunsaturated fats come from plants and fish, but they may be more likely to form free radicals and lead to tissue damage. Good sources of polyunsaturated fats include most other vegetable oils ad high-fat fish such as salmon and tuna. This type of nutrient is protein. Protein is used to help maintain and replace the tissues in our body and is almost found every living cell and fluid. Our muscles, organs and many of our hormones are made up of protein, and it is also used in the manufacture of the red blood cells that carry oxygen to your body. Protein is also used to make antibodies, which fights infections and diseases and is essential to our bodys blood clotting ability. Good sources of protein are: fish, tofu, peas, milk, shellfish, cheese and lamb.
