fingers at many women in the community. 190 people were accused of witchcraft, and roughly 20 men and women were executed (hanged). In regards to social classes, what was the easiest way to move up the social ladder? Make lots of money How could you tell which social class someone belonged to? By their style of dress, or the clothes they wore. Which voyage became known as the Middle Passage? The leg of the Atlantic slave trade in which slaves were brought from West Africa to the New World. What was the First Great Awaking? In the 1730s, it was a massive movement that revived peoples religious spirit. Preachers traveled from town to town delivering powerful sermons called revivals. What was the main significance of the Great Awakening? It encouraged the ideas of liberty (freedom), equality, and resistance to authority that helped pave the way for the American Revolution. Why did the New England colonies have public schools? Because Puritans tended to settle their and they wanted their children to be able to read in order that they would be able to read the Bible. Why did almost all colonial women get married? Because men outnumbered women; for every one woman, there were between 4 to 6 men. How big was the average colonial family? Average families had between 7 and 10 children Why did colonial families have so many kids? Free labor Half of the kids were not expected to live to see adulthood. Odds increased that one of the children would be successful in order to take care of the adults when they got old. What was a bee? When all of the neighbors would get together to help one family or person get something done. They usually were done in a fun way as a way of mixing work and play. (example: chopping bee, quilting bee) How did the colonists make work and chores not seem so much like a burden? When possible, they would mix work and play (example: a bee)
