Zircon, Blue Topaz, Pink Turquoise, Onyx Ruby Turquoise Tourmaline Lapis Lazuli Birthstones are a fun way to celebrate ones birth. We have included birthstone charts from many different traditions so you have many choices. Know whatever your choice, your gift will be well loved. If you want the most significance choose older traditions; if you want more popular stones choose a modern birthstone. The Modern Birthstone list contains the official birthstone list from the American National Association of Jewelers, Jewelers of America. These gemstones were officially adopted in 1912. In the US, this is the accepted list. The Traditional Birthstone list contains older birthstones and is sometimes combined with the modern birthstone list. These stones reflect societal birthstone traditions, heralding back to the 15th century. (Many jewelers have differing lists of traditional birthstones.)

The Mystical Birthstone list is of Tibetan origin from over a thousand years ago. Ancient lore says that these stones are to help one overcome the obstacles of their birth month. The Ayurvedic Birthstone list is from Ayurvedic Indian Medicine - a type of medicine used for over a thousand years. If you want a healing gemstone, you may wish to consider one of these. Stones listed in the "other" column were correlated by Dave Thompson and others participating on the usenet newsgroup rec.crafts.jewelry as alternative birthstones for each month. The Curious Lore of Precious Stones by George Frederick Kunz has a wonderful list of birthstones from different cultures. When you give someone a birthstone gift, be sure to add some care tips and/or lore from the specific gemstone page associated with it. Use Birthstone Search results to find stores that carry birthstone jewelry. Also see Gemstone Therapy for more detailed information on the mystical properties of certain stones.

So you think you know your birthstone? Read the birthstones list and you'll discover... No matter what month you were born in, you may have more birthstones jewelry choices than you think. Ancient Origins of Modern Birth Stones Most gem scholars trace the origins of our modern birthstones list to the time of the ancient Hebrews. For example, there is a "breastplate of judgement" which Moses described. It included 12 gem stones, one stone for each of the 12 tribes of Israel. There is another description, this time from the Book of Revelations, that also describes 12 gem stones. According to my sources, these two lists were combined. Those 12 gemstones were listed in order to become the birthstones list for our monthly calendar. That birthstones list looked like this:

January birthstone -- Garnet February birthstone -- Amethyst March birthstones -- Bloodstone or Jasper April birthstones -- Sapphire or Diamond May birthstone -- Emerald June birthstone -- Agate July birthstone -- Turquoise August birthstone -- Carnelian September birthstone -- Crysolite October birthstone -- Beryl November birthstone --Topaz December birthstone -- Ruby

These were the commonly accepted birth stones until 1912.

Changes to the Birth Stone List In 1912, the American National Retail Jewelers Association (ANRJA) changed the list of birthstones. They changed the birth stones to be more financially beneficial to the jewelry industry. In 1938, the American Gem Society (AGS) adopted the list. When they did, they added one new birthstone. Citrine. In 1952 this list of birthstones changed again. This is almost the complete list of birthstones by month that we use today:

January birthstone -- Garnet February birthstone -- Amethyst March birthstones -- Aquamarine or Bloodstone April birthstone -- Diamond May birthstone -- Emerald June birthstones -- Pearl, Moonstone or Alexandrite July birthstone -- Ruby

August birthstones -- Peridot or Sardonyx September birthstone -- Blue Sapphire October birthstones -- Opal or Pink Tourmaline November birthstones --Topaz or Citrine December birthstones -- Turquoise or Zircon

I'll check the date, I think it was sometime in 2003 that ANRJA added one final birthstone to the list. They added Tanzanite as another December birthstone.

Gemstones as Birthstones or Zodiac Stones

There is an ancient belief that gemstones came from the heavens. Each month (or birthstone) carries a set of characteristics that govern those born under each sign. Some cultures thinks in terms of each month of the year, and some cultures think in terms of the zodiac signs. This varies from country to country. The custom of wearing birthstones started in Poland in the 18th century and has spread throughout the world. The custom of giving gemstones as gifts to royalty, lovers and relatives used to actually be the gift of the set of powers behind each stone. Warriors and soldiers wore gem-studded armor plates believing in the protection of the gemstones and their particular powers. Below is the list of birthstones, and what each stone means. Jupiter rules the Phukhraj or Yellow Sapphire. It is of yellow color and whatever class it belongs to, it is used for getting the benevolent blessings of Jupiter. An unblemished yellow sapphire (often-called Topaz, a substitute semi-precious stone) gives the wearer, good health, wisdom, property, longevity, name, honors and fame. The wearer is blessed with children. It gives protection from evil spirits. It is believed that if there are obstructions in getting a suitable match for a girl, she gets married early by wearing a yellow Sapphire. Blemished gemstones are the cause of many troubles. A stone with cracks invites threats or theft. One without luster and transparency creates enemies and causes disharmony in the family. A milky stone invites injuries to the body. The one with a web causes stomach disorders. The one with red dots on it destroys wealth. The stone with a depression causes anxiety and disturbs peace of mind. Who Should Wear A Yellow Sapphire? Yellow Sapphire is the gemstone ruled by Jupiter. There is some difference of opinion whether the Sapphire assigned to Jupiter is the white Sapphire or the yellow Sapphire.
