General Information
Fusionsplicing is used to physically join together two optical fiber ends; the process may vary,
depending on the type of fusion splicer used. The S148S Single-Fiber Fusion Splicer uses
precision, fixed V-grooves to align the fiber ends and heat from a controllable electric arc to
melt the glass and butt the ends together. This results in a strong joint, with very low loss and
very low backreflection.
To achieve good splicing results, it is essential to know both the proper use of a fusion splicer
and the characteristics of optical fiber. Because not all fibers are identical, they can melt or
fuse at different temperatures. Therefore, to minimize splice loss, it is important that the arc
power and the duration of the fusion arc be properly adjusted. The S148S fusion splicer
features an arc check function to help the user adjust these parameters. Other intrinsic
factors that contribute to the increase in splice loss are core diameter mismatch, cladding
diameter mismatch, numerical aperture mismatch, core concentricity and noncircularity.
Core Diameter Mismatch
Cladding Diameter Mismatch
Numerical Aperture Mismatch
Different fibers have different numerical apertures. The aperture dictates the acceptance
angle of light.

Optical fiber is basically classified as either single-mode (SM) or multimode (MM). Single-
mode fiber, which includes dispersion-shifted fiber types, will transmit a single-mode (path) of
data at wavelengths greater than the cut-off wavelength (1170 nm). Approximately 80% of
the light is transmitted within the core, and 20% is transmitted in the surrounding cladding.
Therefore, the transmission path is more accurately referred to as the mode field and not as
the core. With a core diameter of typically 8 IJm and a mode field diameter of approximately
10 IJm, single-mode fiber can transmit more data than multimode fiber and with less
attenuation.
In multimode fiber, the optical signal is transmitted entirely within the core. These fibers have
a core size of 50 IJmto 100 IJm(50 IJm or 62.5 IJm, typically) and are commonly used in local
area networks (LANs), short distance links and closed circuit television (CCTV).

Core Diameter/Axis offset
Because the optical signal is transmitted through the core of the fiber, it is important to
understand how the cores of the two fibers being spliced together compare. The following
general formula can be used to show the effects of core offset on the splice loss. The formula
is only theoretical and does not take into account other extrinsic factors such as cleave
quality and dust contamination, and intrinsic factors such as core noncircularity and
numerical aperture.

\
right fiber
splice loss
splice loss =10 x log OUTPUT =10 x log ~ ( 2A8 )' EXP(_ 2d')J
10 INPUT 1 O ~ A' + 8' A' + 8'
A difference between A and B will cause a splice loss, even if d is zero. If using single-
mode fiber, the manufacturer of the fiber may be able to provide mode field diameter
specifications.
It is impossible to have perfectly centered cores, because fiber manufacturing limitations
often result in small offsets. Today's optical fibers are well manufactured and have core
eccentricity of less than 0.5 IJm. However, older fiber exhibits core eccentricity near 1.0 IJm.
When using a fusion splicer such as the S148S that aligns the cladding correctly by means of
its fixed V-grooves, the offset of the fiber cores will range from zero to double the core
eccentricity.
A worst case scenario of 2 IJm core offset when splicing single-mode fiber with a 10 IJm mode
field diameter will yield a splice loss of approximately 0.2 dB. A more typical offset of 0.5 IJm
will yield a splice loss of approximately 0.01 dB. Similarly, when splicing multimode fiber with
a 62.5 IJm core diameter, the theoretical splice loss is 0.004 dB and 0.0003 dB for 2.0 IJm
and 0.5 IJm core offset, respectively. This gives a clear indication of why multimode fiber
splicing yields lower splice loss.

Performing an Arc Check
Because fibers melt or fuse at different temperatures, it is necessary to adjust the arc power
in order to ensure optimum splicing results. As well, electrode wear or changes in
environmental conditions (e.g., temperature or humidity) can affect the splicing results.
Therefore, an arc check should be performed everyday, prior to initial use, when the fiber
type is changed or when high splice losses are obtained.
The Arc Check screen is displayed each time the 81488 fusion splicer is powered on.
.. To perform an arc check immediately after power-up, press ./ and follow steps 2 and 3
provided below. To bypass this function press ~ .
.. To perform an arc check after one or more fusion splicing cycles, return the 81488 fusion
splicer to the Ready screen, press ./ to display the Program menu, and follow steps 1 to
3 provided below.
1. Press b. or V to scroll to <Arc Check>, and press ./ to display the Arc Check menu.
2. Load the fibers. Ensure that the fibers are properly stripped, cleaned and cleaved.
3. P r e s s ~ . The 81488 fusion splicer automatically feeds the fibers and discharges an arc.
51485 Single-fiber Fusion Splicer Getting Started - 4
During the arc discharge, the fiber feeding motors of the 81488 fusion splicer remain idle,
preventing the fiber ends from butting. As a result, the fiber ends melt back. The arc check
function inspects how far the fibers melt back and the centred position of the fiber. If the arc
check results are good, the message OK is displayed, and the 81488 fusion splicer returns
to the Ready screen or the Program menu screen.
arc is good arc is too weak arc is too strong
If the results are not acceptable, i.e., the arc power is not optimum or the two fiber ends had a
disproportionate melt back with respect to the position of the electrodes, the following screen
is displayed. However, if either one of the two parameters does not require adjustment, that
parameter will not be displayed.
Prompts recommending adjustments to the arc power or the centred position of the fiber are
displayed.
To enter the recommended values automatically, press ./.
To adjust the values to settings other than those recommended, press b.. or \l to scroll
to Center or Power, press - or + to adjust the setting, and press ./ to confirm the new
values.
To toggle the screen between the fiber view and the data view, press )(.
S148S Single-fiber Fusion Splicer Getting Started - 5
Repeat the arc check to determine that the new values are acceptable. If unsatisfactory
results are obtained after four (4) arc check attempts, inspect the electrodes for wear or
damage, and replace them if necessary.
+ A visual arc check can be made by viewing the arc on the monitor. Electrode discharge
should produce a straight and steady arc. Swaying in the arc indicates that the electrodes
require either cleaning or replacing.
