Throughout history persons have sat and contemplated what it would be like in a world without suffering or death. When the body does not show age, a place where pestilence and famine are things of the past. The technology which has the ability to maximize minimal space has become reality and is now the way of the future. Science, with its ever ongoing advancements, seeks to accomplish this task - a world without these hindrances. This is the reality that nano-technology presents human beings with; where the ordinary man is not limited by the conditions around him but his only limitation is his imagination. Nano-technology makes the future looks even brighter. Nano-technology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic scale. This simply means that this type of technology allows for scientist to separate, consolidate and deform atoms at a sub-molecular level; making the possibility of stronger lighter materials and the exploration of unchartered waters a reality so to speak. This concept first came about at a talk given by an American physicist, Richard Feynman at an American Physical Society meeting in 1959. It was some decades later that nanotechnology was seriously consider as a possibility by a Nobel Prize winning chemist, Richard E. Smalley. He was inspired by his subjection to chemotherapy due to cancer, which worsen his health tremendously. He envisioned a future aided by nano-technology where people would not have to consider chemotherapy as the only option of treatment. This theory was later applied to the real world by and engineer named Carlo Montemagno from Cornell University, New York. He built a self-assembling, flagellumlike nano-motor. This was considered a great achievement by many and paved the way for future prospects. Through the use of nano-technology many aspect of human life have been improved exponentially. Areas such as mechanical engineering, medicine and the environment have been driven to new heights due to the advancement of this science. This discipline has inspired many in the field of mechanical engineering to press forward in the development for tools of the trade and gave way to the concept, nano-mechanics. This means the study and characterization of the mechanical behavior of individual atoms, systems and structures in response to various types of forces and loading conditions. With this in mind scientists are trying to create stronger lighter materials to

be use in daily life. Another area that nano-technology has made a vast impression on is medicine. The vision of medicine aided by nano-technology is phenomenal. By using nanoscopic receptors placed in the body to detect chemical signatures of bacterium and viruses and then injecting nano-mites. These nano-mites then seek out and destroy the bacterium cells. This gives hope to many medical practitioners in the fight against terminal diseases such as cancer and less aggressive ailments such as the common cold. Furthermore the earth itself will see dramatic changes due to nano-technology. As we know the environment is deteriorating due to mans activities; with the constant release of pollutants in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide (Co2). Although it is a naturally occurring gas due to the reparation on plants and animals; the volume at which it dispersed into the environment has increase because of motor vehicles and factories. This is a huge contribute to global warming. Scientist hopes to possibly reverse or stem this deterioration of the environment with the use of nano-structured membranes that can separate carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the earth and its atmosphere. The applications of nano-technology are far reaching with tremendous impact. The future looks brighter than ever, nano-technology once considered a figment of a mans imagination has woven itself into the fabric of reality and will forever change the way we see ourselves and the world at large. Nano-technology is here. Embrace it!!!
