WOMEN EMPOWERMENT 2010 2011

Madras Social Service Society is implementing the Mahalir Thittam project among the poorest of poor women in and around Tiruvallur District for the past 13 years. Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women provides technical and financial support to Madras Social Service Society. The vision of the project is to reach out the empowerment of the poor women who are below the poverty line through self reliant and sustainable Self Help Groups. Mahalir Thittam project promotes among the poor women for saving habits, nurture entrepreneurial skills and aptitudes, promotes exposure to the Banking transitions and to free them from the clutches of money lenders.

As the SHGs grew, the members in the SHGs also amplified and there are 56819 women who are as Bellow Poverty Line (BPL) is the members in the SHGs

Savings of the SHGs Members:


For the past 4 years Mahalir Thittam project was decentralized with the (RD) department. Hence the BDOs Staff monitor the SHGs activity at Panchayath and Block Levels. SHGs are self managed groups of poor women who primarily come in to existence with financial resource through their own savings among themselves. The SHGs have a powerful vibrant movement functioning at grassroot and spread over in the District. Now MSSS has 4472 SHGs functioning through Mahalir Thittam, with the total savings of Rs. 126,719,904.00/- in Thiruvallur District. This amount has been used as the leverage to tap the various schemes and resource of Government through the Bank and other Government departments. Re structuring of PLF During the last 3 years more attention was given to the restructuring of PLFs by TNWDP the office bearers of PLFs undergone different Levels of trainings. Totally 32 PLFs restructured, out of this 21 PLFs are registered under society act. As a token of incentive all the 21 PLFs received Rs. 100000/- each as cash incentive towards to develop their group IGA through TNWDP. All the SHGs activities of PLFs where mange by the Office bearers and also they are having the own action plan towards bulk lending through the Nationalizes Banks.

District Project coordination committee Meetings The District project coordination committee meeting was held in every month in the presence of the district collector, with all the Line department heads and also with the Bankers. During the meeting the project stakeholders shared the progress of the project in the area operations and also about difficulties in the field CAPACITY BUILDING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT In order to improve the Entrepreneurial aptitude and skill of the women, Government has imparted various types of skill trainings to promote self and wage employment. Provision of skill training to women has given recognition, so as to enable them to start their own income generating activities. Credit Linkage to Rural and Urban SHGs details MSSS played vital role in mobilizing Government resources through various financial instruction for the development of women During this year sum of Rs.3, 52, 40,000/- has been mobilized as loan and received Rs. 73, 40,000/- as back ended subsidy for the various income generating activities of the SHGs. 294 SHGs functioning in Thiruvallur District have mobilized Revolving Fund (RF) Loan of Rs1,76,40,000/-, 44 SHGs received Economic Activity Loan Amount of RS.1,76,00,000/- and also 397 SHGs have mobilized Direct Linkage (DL) Loan of Rs. 8,54,58,000/- through various Nationalized Banks. The SHGs availed Revolving Found, Direct Linkage and Economic activity loans for starting different unit such as Dairy, Goat and Sheep rearing, Embroidery, Cloth sea

Food Products, Vegetable sales, fruit sales, vessels sales, cycle shop, Auto rickshaw running, Xerox centers, Soft Toys, Agro based activities, Provisional Stores, Canteen, STD Booth, Weaving Centers, Mosaic Polish, Hollow Block Bricks making Units, Tailoring Units, Rations Shop, etc.. And also they are earning sizable income and are able to repay the Bank loans promptly. In each SHGs a portion of Loan amount was lent for education, emergency and consumer purpose SGSY Revolving Fund Loan to the SHGs 2010 2011

PLF federation was functioning in an area of operation as an part of the development process during the last year 21 PLFs are restructured and Registered under society act. 21 Register PLFs received each 1 Lac as cash incentives towards there IGA programmes by Hon Minister Mr.M.K.Stalin SHG members actively participating in Panchayath level Grama saba meetings and plan for there achieving basic needs as well as development activities. Nollambur PLF members conducted human chain against to poor basic condition of the at the Panchayath During this year 287 new SHG's have received set of registers from TNWDP as free of Cost Most of the SHG's receiving Mutram Magazine published by TNCWD Chennai during this year 250 SHGs paid their subscription for Mutram magazine
