NEW JOURNEY FOR KPLA PAST EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER
Ms. Rivera suerte as the Chief of Clinical Operations of La Clinica de La Raza!
I am writing with feelings of both sadness and admiration to share the news that Stephanie Rivera is leaving QOS and KP to join the executive team at La Clinica de la Raza as their Chief of Clinical Operations. The sadness is, of course, due to losing the benefit of a passionate and driven colleague; it is balanced by my admiration of both her accomplishments to date and the valuable role she is embarking on to serve an important need in our community. Although Stephanie has been with QOS just a short while, she has had a long and distinguished career with Kaiser Permanente. She joined KP in 2004 as the Director of Radiology at the Richmond Medical Center and later held that same position at both the San Francisco Medical Center and in the Diablo Service Area. In these roles, Stephanie led numerous access and quality improvement initiatives, accomplishing substantial and sustained performance improvements. Stephanie and her physician Director colleague led the Richmond Medical Center Radiology department to receive the 2006 Exemplary Department Award for all of Northern California and in 2008 she was also awarded the KP NCAL Regional Imaging Leader of the Year Award. In addition, Stephanie contributed to organization-wide performance improvement by serving as the Chair of the KP Radiology Peer Group, supporting the group's efforts to learn from one another and improve performance region-wide. Throughout her career at the medical centers and at QOS, Stephanie demonstrated an outstanding commitment to KP's Labor Management Partnership, ensuring that the benefits of the partnership were realized for our members and our organization. Stephanie's commitment to leading in an operational setting and for ensuring the provision of high quality health care to under-served populations have led her to this next phase of her career. Earlier in her career, she served for five years as Associate Director of the Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, a commmunitybased organization where she led all aspects of a new facility startup, including facility planning, budget development, marketing and hiring personnel as well as oversight of all compliance entities and risk management programs. She has also served on multiple boards, including acting as Treasurer of the KP Latino Association, Chair of the School to Career Partnership Board, and Board Member of the Hispanic Women's Health Association. La Clinica de la Raza is a wonderful community health center with which KP has strong ties via our Community Benefits program. The organization's mission is to improve the quality of life of the diverse communities it serves by providing culturally appropriate, high quality and accessible health care. La Clinica provides the Bay Area's uninsured and underinsured population with a wide array of primary, specialty, ancillary and mental health care services across 25 sites in Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano counties. Stephanie has a long personal association with the organization and we certainly understand their enthusiasm to bring her into their executive leadership team as they prepare for the upcoming changes that are expected with health care reform. She starts her new job with La Clinica on April 11th. In closing, it is an honor to thank Stephanie for her many years of service and her excellent contributions to KP. I'm very proud to have worked with her and expect that her unique skills and commitment will continue to improve health care in her new role with La Clinica de la Raza.

Please join me, Berta Bejarano, in congratulating Stephanie Rivera, KPLA Past Executive Board, on her new journey. KPLA honors and wishes Inside this issue:

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE BAY AREA: CAMBIA UNA VIDA

At the young age of 10, Jesus, has been hit hard by life. He lives in one of the most poverty concentrated areas in the Bay Area with his mother, brother, and sister. With a minimum wage job, his Latina mom can barely provide the basic needs for him. Jesus father is out of his life -- he was incarcerated 2 years ago. Since then, Jesus grades dropped, his behavior changed, and he is in desperate need of a strong Latino male role model. His wish is to have a home and a Big Brother who he can play sports with. Jesus is not the only one facing these challenges. That is a why Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area (BBBSBA), the oldest mentoring organization in the

Bay Area that connects volunteers in the community with at-risk children to create meaningful mentoring relationships, is looking for Latino mentors. Currently, there are 197 Latino children waiting to be matched in the Bay Area. Sixty percent of the children waiting are boys. More alarming, is that only five Latino volunteers are waiting to be matched in the entire Bay Area, most are women.
