Title : Common Health Problems Among Level

III Nursing Students’ Affiliates

Its Effects on the Academic

Performance SY 2006-2007

Abstract

The study was conducted among 160 level III nursing

students at Butuan Doctors’ College , Butuan City. A self-

made instrument was used to determine the common health

problems encountered by level III nursing students.

The researchers employed a descriptive correlational

research design. The descriptive design was used in

answering questions no. 1 and 2 . Problem no.1 was all

about the magnitude of encountering health problems like

tension headache, migraine, sinusitis , toothache, cough,

diarrhea and skin diseases . Problem no. 2 was all about

academic performance . The correlational design of the

study is reflected when test of effect was tested by chi

square between two variables.

Majority of the respondent oftentimes experienced

common health problems like tension headache, Sometimes,

sinusitis, toothache, productive cough, diarrhea and skin

diseases.

Majority of the respondents performed satisfactorily

in their academic performance for the 1st semester of SY

2007-2008.

The study revealed that perceived common health

problems have significant effect in the academic

performance of the Level III and IV students as shown in

tables 16-21.

On the basis of the above findings, the researchers

recommend that ;(1) The school administration should

enhance medical services for students’ welfare like regular

check-up and hire more clinic physician and/or school

nurses and lengthen clinic hours; (2) Nursing Faculty to

identify students needing medical care and use a better

referral procedure for students to health care providers in

base/affiliating hospitals;(3)The students should submit to

regular check up and follow treatment regimen; (4) The

parents monitor not only the health status of their

students but also determine effects of their health on

their academic performance; and, (5) for future researchers

to undertake the same study and involve more variables

affecting academic performance.
