HUMANITIES IN HOSPICE

A Kumeyaay Village Cactus The land of the native Kumeyaay tribe extends from San Diego County to Arizona, all the way to the ocean and down to Baja, California towards Ensenada, Mexico.

Attend a special screening of SMOKE SIGNALS, an award-winning film and recipient of the Special Recognition for Excellence in Filmmaking by the National Board of Review. Engage in a discussion of how the movies themes of compassion, resiliency, empathy, forgiveness and spiritual pain relate to our own lives. SMOKE SIGNALS is a comedy/drama created, produced and directed by Native Americans and starring Native American actors. We will allow the movie to guide us into experiencing the spiritual pains of forgiveness and relatedness in the Native American culture and our own lives, with mindful facilitation being provided by Dr. Charles Lewis of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine. Tribal Elder Nick Elliott will welcome and bless us with an opening prayer. Tribal Advocate, Speaker and gifted artist Paulette Moreno will be with us to share the richness of her background, steeped in Native American wisdom and spirituality.

Nick Elliott Nick Elliott is a respected Tribal Elder of the Manzanita tribe of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Charles R. Lewis, MD Dr. Lewis is the Medical Director, Inpatient Care Center, the Director of the Integrative Palliative Medicine Program and Co-Chair of the Sacred Art of Living & Dying Committee at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine.

^ Paulette Moreno Paulette is of Tlingit, Mexican and Japanese heritage and follows her mothers Tlingit clan. She has over 20 years experience as a Civil Rights, Education and Tribal advocate. Paulette is also a gifted writer and a director who shares this expression through the Humanities. She utilizes art, poetry, music and dance as forms of expression. She divides her time between Sitka, Alaska and San Diego, California.
