The next part of Savitri we are going to discuss is as follows.

A thought was sown in the unsounded Void,

A sense was born within the darkness' depths,
A memory quivered in the heart of Time
As if a soul long dead were moved to live:
But the oblivion that succeeds the fall,
Had blotted the crowded tablets of the past,
And all that was destroyed must be rebuilt
And old experience laboured out once more.
All can be done if the god-touch is there.

MEANINGS OF SOME DIFFICULT WORDS.

Oblivion = the state of being disregarded or forgotten, total forgetfulness.

In our previous discussion, we discussed the appearance of Goddess Usha. The huge foreboding
Night was initially reluctant to her, because of its previous delusion. But goddess Usha is
successful to compel the consent of this Night to take up the adventure of consciousness and joy.
As a result of this there were several consequences.

A thought was sown in the unsounded Void,

A sense was born within the darkness' depths,

“A thought was sown in the unsounded Void”. Here “unsounded” means unfathomed or
extremely deep. If you shout over the opening of a well, you will hear an echo, as the base of the
well reflects the sound waves. If the well is very deeper? The chances of echo are reduced.
Therefore, here unsounded means extremely deep. In this extremely deep Void, Goddess Usha
sows a thought. Then, “A sense was born within the darkness’ depths”. In this profound
darkness, which “was” completely senseless, a sense is born.

Now, why this thought is sown? Why this sense is born? Because there is a message from the
messenger from the sun, the Goddess Usha, to wake up for the adventure of the consciousness
and joy. The Night has also give its consent to “see” the consciousness and “feel” the joy.
Thought can also be perceived as a “vision”. Therefore a vision is given to this Night to see the
consciousness. The sense is born to feel the joy.

In the next lines, the context of discussion changes and is with respect to Time, instead of the
Night.

A memory quivered in the heart of Time

As if a soul long dead were moved to live:

Now, a memory awakes in the heart of Time, “As if a soul long dead were moved to live:”. Like
some of us remember something very suddenly and we say like “Are haan yaar, ye aisa hai . .”.
Now what is this memory and why is it awakened? In our previous discussions, we discussed
that in this profound Nought, there is a “blank prescience” which aspires for a distant change.
Prescience means knowledge about the future. But this prescience was so far blank. Now this
prescience should get some data input! Therefore this memory has awakened. Now, what is this
data input given to this prescience? We will see in the following lines.
But the oblivion that succeeds the fall,
Had blotted the crowded tablets of the past,

We already know that the world goes into cycles of creations and destructions. Therefore the
previous destruction, the “fall” had an effect of oblivion, that is a total loss of memory on this
profound Night or Nature. It had forgotten all that happened during the previous cycle, that is
“had blotted the crowded tablets of the past”. Therefore, for the evolution to continue, this
“blank prescience” must be refilled, that is the data input! The data input given here are
memories of the previous creation. The above two line are like reasoning between a statement.
They give the reason why this memory has to come and then the theme of previous two lines
continues once again as followed. Now another question, why is it necessary?

And all that was destroyed must be rebuilt

And old experience laboured out once more.

This memory awakened also reminds that “And all that was destroyed must be rebuilt” and
“And old experience must be laboured once more”. It means all the experience and
achievements of the previous creation has been completely lost and it must be regained. Now, a
thought may have arisen, a sense may have born, but all the old achievements and experience has
been wiped out, which if highly essential. One real life example would make it clear. One of my
friends is working for an IT company. He is basically a mechanical engineer, but working this
company since the beginning of his career. After a long time, he had to work upon an electro-
mechanical system, may be a robot kind of a thing. For this he had to use his knowledge of one
core subject of mechanical engineering, known as “Dynamics of Machines”. But it was long time
since he had used that knowledge, and naturally he had lost the touch about the subject
completely. Therefore he had to study it one again from the scratch, like a student. He had the
sense and thought of what to do, but the exact knowledge was missing. Therefore this experience
must be regained by the Night so that the evolution can continue. This is a message for the
professionals from Sri Aurobindo. For the success you should have a vision of what you should
do, a sense of what you are doing, and the knowledge or experience about what you are doing.
May be this is why today’s companies are not recruiting freshers!

Here, all these lines like seeding of the thought in the Void, a sense being born in a insensible
entity, and regaining of this lost experience, may seem near impossible. But,

All can be done if the god-touch is there.

This epigram – according to me – is the most powerful line of Savitri. An epigram is a single line
summing up a profound message, a deep wisdom. However impossible, however challenging a
task may appear, it appears only so to our human eyes, only to human effort. If god-touch
(Bhagavat Sparsha) is there, that is Divine Will and Grace is there for that task, it is assured that
all can be achieved. Nothing is impossible if we can invoke the Divine Grace and link ourselves
to it. Similarly, however impossible it may seem that a thought can arise in an inconscient entity
and a sense can arise in an insensible entity, here we have a god-touch, the Supreme Divine’s
Will is acting here. As his Grace, Goddess Usha has arrived, and the inconscient Night has
linked itself to her. So all these processes may appear impossible to our human eyes, but are
achieved with his Grace.
When I took this task of writing about Savitri, in the community, it seemed a highly impossible
task for me. But our fellow moderator was not the one who was going to forgive me. Then ijust
prayed in Her. “Mother make me an instrument of yours and enable me to perform this task of
Yours and Master’s” – “Apne Haathonka Yantra Bana, Apna Kaarya Karao”. With this I could
come so far. I never imagined that I would go like this; in fact I was not even sure that I could
get started so good. It is only because of Her grace that I have been able to come up to your
expectations. I don’t know exactly whether whatever I am writing is correct or not, because I still
feel that I could not have done this, when I see the previous posts whenever I am free. Also all
the members have given me the support and affection, which I had not all imagined. I am sure it
will continue. But, this is not all. This is just the beginning. There is a long, long way to go. Lots
of Spirit still needs to be discovered, Flood of Grace is going to come, which needs to be linked
with. So lets continue to Pray in Her Divine Feet.

CONCLUSION
Well! Do we have anything more to say?

“All can be done if god-touch is there”.
