Vaccinations for meningococcal bacteria: Recommended for young people at least 18 years old, especially for those going to college. The bacteria cause meningitis, a disease that inflames membranes around the brain and spine. The disease can lead to brain damage, kidney failure, loss of arms or legs, chronic nervous system problems, hearing loss and death. Shingles vaccinations: For anyone at least age 65 who has had chickenpox. The disease causes rashes and intense pain, which sometimes lasts after rashes heal.
