Each day we have many reasons for giving thanks to God. In these days, together with the entire Vincentian Family, we give thanks to God for the great gift of Saint Vincent to the world and to the Church. His example inspires us every day to continue the project Jesus Christ initiated: a full life for the poor and the humble. This months Nuntia echoes this thanksgiving and highlights the value and the urgency that the Vincentian lifestyle has for the world today. Congratulations companions of this way. May Gods grace, poured out in our holy Founder, continue to inspire our projects at the service of our masters: the poor.

The General Curia

The Superior General
September was full of many activities and visits for the Superior General. Between 31 August and 3 September he travelled, in the company of Andrew Bellisario, Director of the Daughters of Charity of the Province of Los Altos Hills, to the mission of the Daughters of Charity in Magadan (a small city located in the east of Russia, in what is usually known as Siberia). During the Stalin (Iosif Dzhugashvili) era, Magadan was the major crossing point for prisoners on their way to the work camps. It was used for more than 20 years as the center of operations of the brutal forced labor. The mission community in Magadan is made up of three Daughters of Charity, one from the Province of Los Altos Hills and two from the Province of Cracow. The sisters serve in the Church of the Nativity Parish. They live in an apartment on the fifth floor of a building with a Soviet-type structure (without an elevator). It should be noted that all the work carried out by the sisters is very important, especially that of accompanying the people in the process of healing the wounds left there from that period of great suffering for the region. After the visit to Magadan, on 4 September, he travelled to California, to the Provincial House of the Daughters of Charity in Los Altos Hills in the company of Father Bellisario. There he had the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist with the sisters, talk with them, and visit those in the infirmary. The following day (5 September), he had a meeting with the different Branches of the Vincentian Family of the San Francisco Bay Area. Participating in the meeting were members of the SSVP, AIC, DC, CM, a group of Lay Vincentian Volunteers, and affiliates of the Daughters of Charity. On 6 September, in the company of Father Bellisario and Sister Marjory Ann Baez, Visitatrix of Los Altos Hills, he went to Anchorage, to visit a community of Daughters of Charity. On the 7th, he got to know firsthand the different works of this community that include a peoples market and other social services that the diocese has and in which the sisters collaborate.

The same day he concelebrated the Eucharist with the Archbishop of Anchorage and then shared lunch with him. He had dinner with the SSVP and in the evening had a meeting with the Vincentian Marian Youth (JMV or VMY) of the Church of San Antonio. On the 8th, feast of Marys nativity, he had a meeting with the group promoting the cause of canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha, the first indigenous star of the United States. Later he visited the Bishop Emeritus, who was responsible for inviting the Daughters of Charity to the Mission in Magadan, because the Archdiocese of Anchorage is twinned with the Mission of Magadan. On the 9th, he finished the visit by celebrating the Eucharist in the house of the sisters, in the context of 60 years of vocation of Sister Catherine Kline, Sister Servant of this community. He visited the house of the Daughters of Charity in Bountiful, Utah. In addition, he was received by the Hipley family, affiliates of the Daughters of Charity. (As a curiosity of providence, he accidentally met this couple on a flight from Italy to Paris, some months previously). Later he travelled to Santa Barbara, California, where he visited the work the Daughters of Charity have had there for more than 175 years. The following day he met the Visitor of the Western Province of the United States and together they travelled to Camarillo, where the provinces of the United States now have their students theological stage formation. At present, there are four students: two from the Eastern Province and two from the Western. Later they went to DePaul Center for a meeting with the Vincentian Family of the Los Angeles area. About 100 persons met. They celebrated the Eucharist and then had a fraternal sharing. The following day he celebrated the Eucharist in Saint Vincents Parish in Los Angeles and visited Mother of Sorrows School, which the Daughters of Charity have there. It is like an oasis in the middle of the desert, because it is located in a rather violent area and with a high index of problems with drug addiction. The sisters work at forming values and accompanying the children. At the end of this day he met a new group of JMV. On the 14th, he returned to Rome and during the following days he worked in his office, as well as taking some rest time. On the 19th, together with the Assistant General, Father Zeracristos, he left for Madagascar to take part in the various activities prepared to celebrate the closing of the jubilee year, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the province of the Congregation of the Mission in these lands and the inauguration of the jubilee year of the Daughters of Charity for the same intention. The first meeting in Madagascar (Tuesday, the 20th) was with the Daughters of Charity of Antananarivo (Tana), capital of Madagascar. All the sisters who serve in this area took part in the meeting. Then he had the Eucharist in the parish in Tanjobato, where the sisters have a work. The Mass was concelebrated by several confreres with members of the DC, SSVP, AIC, JMV, and children of the works where the sisters serve taking part. After the Eucharist they shared lunch, a brief meeting, and some cultural activities. On Wednesday, the 21st, he travelled to the Provincial Houses of the Daughters of Charity and of the Congregation of the Mission in Tolangaro, in the extreme southeast of Madagascar, where he also had a meeting with the Vincentian Family.

On the 22nd, he took part in the special activities inaugurating the jubilee year of the Daughters of Charity to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the province. At this celebration, there was a presentation of the province, a colloquium with the sisters, and a new secondary school was presented, the fruit of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the deaths of Saint Vincent and Saint Louise. On the 23rd, he was present at the celebration of taking of vows of two missionaries of the CM. We give thanks to the Lord of the Harvest, who has blessed this jubilee year of the Congregation in Madagascar with many vocations. Then he had a meeting with the confreres and a pilgrimage to the centenarys commemorative monument. On the 24th, he took part in the ordination of two deacons and two priests of the CM. On the 25th, he participated in a special celebration of sending. As fruit of the jubilee year, four missionaries of the Province of Madagascar were sent to special missions. One confrere is going to Santo Domingo to work with Haitian brothers of the Diaspora and two confreres together with the Province of Paris are going to the new mission on the Island of Reunion. The other confrere is going to COVIAMs new mission in Chad. On Monday, the 24th, they returned to Tana, visiting the community of the Nazarene Sisters, a congregation founded by the confrere, Marcantonio Durando. On the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, he had the Eucharist at Akamazoa, where the work of Pedro Opeka is carried out with the help of the Daughters of Charity and several volunteers. He then had dinner with the Archbishop of Antananarivo. On the 28th, there was a meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio and on the 29th, they returned to Rome.

The General Council

Stanislav Zontk One of the important functions to the Assistants General is to make the canonical visitations of the provinces in the Superior Generals name. After the June Tempo Forte meetings, Stanislav Zontk, Assistant General, travelled to Slovakia to make the visitation of this province. The visit began on 16 June. At present, the Province of Slovakia has seven juridically constituted houses: four in Slovakia, two in the Czech Republic, and one in Honduras. There are 38 confreres in the province of which 33 are priests, four are brothers and one is a deacon. At this time, it has six students. The average age of the province is about 45 years. The works that they carry out are distributed in the following way: 12 parishes (eight in Slovakia and four in the Czech Republic), six confreres work on the popular missions, two are employed at the formation of the diocesan clergy, two at the formation of our own candidates, two in pastoral work in prisons, one at the service of the Daughters of Charity, one in the missions ad gentes, three in animation of the Vincentian Family (two in Slovakia and one in Madrid), and three in provincial administration. The visit was carried out based on the already established program. Father Zontk visited all the houses of the province, where he had the opportunity of meeting with the confreres and the students, dialoging on the reality of the Congregation in the province and in the world. He noted that it is a rather dynamic province and that the confreres carry out their work with dedication and enthusiasm. The collaboration with the Daughters of Charity and the different members of the Vincentian Family is very close and very hopeful. 3

After the visitation, he preached the retreat for those responsible for the branches of the Vincentian Family in Slovakia and, together with the National Council of the Vincentian Family, they scheduled the formation meeting on Systemic Change for October 2011. In September, he travelled to the house that the Province of Slovakia has in Honduras, specifically in Sangrelaya (Diocese of Trujillo), to finish the visitation and to celebrate there the Feast of Saint Vincent.

A Family celebration
As part of the festivities of Saint Vincent, the members of the Curia House, in addition to the celebrations in the local community, took part in the general convocation on the feast of Saint Vincent held at the Leonine College. Members of the different branches of the Vincentian Family of Rome, met with great Vincentian spirit for this very crowded celebration. The Eucharist was presided by Bishop Giorgio Corbellini, President of the Labor Office of the Apostolic See and concelebrated by Archbishop Piero Marini, Bishop Luca Brandolini, CM, all the confreres residing in Rome who were present at this time, and some priest-friends of the Congregation. After the Eucharist dinner was shared by all those assisting. 4 We ask God, through the intercession of Saint Vincent, to guide us with the strength of his Spirit in order that we may continue being Good News for the poor.

Young Albanians
Sunday 18 September, we received 30 young Albanians, from the mission of the Daughters of Charity in Mollas (Elbasan, Albania). After a brief meeting with the Vicar General, Father Javier Alvarez, the Superior, Father Giuseppe Carulli celebrated the Eucharist with them in our chapel, and then they shared lunch on the terrace of the Curia.

Peru
There is no act of charity that is not accompanied by justice The 24th Week of Vincentian Studies was held from 5-9 September under the theme, Social Commitment and the Vincentian Charism. Serving as the connecting thread for the week was Saint Vincent de Pauls phrase: There is no act of charity that is not accompanied by justice. (VDP, CCD, II, 68). Every day a topic related to the weeks theme was addressed. Thus, the first day the topic developed was The Challenges of the Social Reality for the Evangelization of the Poor, shared and animated by Cecilia Tovarf from the Bartolom de las Casas School of Theology. The three most urgent challenges for Peru were studied in depth: poverty, exclusion, and violence. The following day the reflection was on The Kingdom of God: Search and Commitment, by Francisco Senz de Maturana, professor of the Higher Institute of Theology John XXIII. At midweek, the topic treated was Saint Vincent de Paul and Social Commitment, explained by Javier Gamero, Provincial Director of the Daughters of Charity. On Thursday the topic was Frederick Ozanam: Apostle and Witness to Social Commitment, by Luis Philip Varcngel, member of Conference of Saint Vincent de Paul of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish in Orrantia. The formation and reflection week concluded with a type reflection workshop where, by groups, they studied in greater depth the topics presented during the week and the transparency implicated in Perus reality.

Costa Rica A Family celebration

Ten branches, which make up the Costa Rican Vincentian Family, celebrated the feast of our Holy Founder, Saint Vincent de Paul, on the morning of Sunday, 18 September, in the facilities of the National Shrine of Santo Cristo de Esquipulas in Alajuelita, southern sector of the capital city. The meeting focused on the topic proposed this year by the Superior General, G. Gregory Gay, Harvesting the Fruits of the Jubilee, and was coordinated by Javier Prez, who is in charge of the Vincentian Family of Costa Rica. Some 100 persons participated and every branch shared its different experiences and the fruits that it harvested immediately after the jubilee of the 350th anniversary.

The celebration also had a presentation of mimes from the pastoral youth group of the parish, and the animation of clowns who played to all those present. The celebration concluded with the Eucharist presided by Oscar Mata Prez.

CLAPVI Fortaleza, Brazil 6th Meeting on Missions

The 6th Meeting of Latin American Missionaries, organized by the LatinAmerican Conference of Vincentian Provinces (CLAPVI) began on 19 September in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, under the theme, The Missionary Essence of the Congregation of the Mission: Experiences, Challenges, and Perspectives of the Church in Latin America. Twenty-two missionaries from the different provinces of Latin America took part in this meeting. Colombia was represented by four missionaries, Central America by three (one from El Salvador in the Province of Central America and two from the interprovincial mission of Honduras), Panamas participant was from the Mission of the Eastern USA Province, seven from Fortaleza, two from Rio de Janeiro, two from Curitiba, two from Peru, and one from Venezuela.

The day started by reviewing the five previous meetings on the missionary topic and sharing the situation of the mission in the different provinces. This was a very enriching moment where the diverse forms of creative expression of the mission throughout Latin America could be known. Experiences that stood out were such as: rural pastoral, social, educational, and missionary, among others. The following day was dedicated to deepening the topic of the mission in Latin America, a presentation and work shared by Paulo Suess, a diocesan priest of German origin, who has worked for more than 40 years in Brazil. On this day we spoke of the reality: that there is a trend toward the purely festive, forgetting the meaning of the cross; that there is a desire of the religious and priests to do much and embrace more on the pastoral level, and that, precisely because of this, one is less effective. Faced with this reality, Father Suess suggested that it is necessary to carry out missionary work that is a sign of another reality, of the reality of the Kingdom. Only if it is a sign of Gods Kingdom, can our pastoral work be called mission or evangelization; otherwise, we would be doing pure philanthropy. On Wednesday, the 21st, there was a community outing that further tightened the bonds of friendship among the confreres. It really was a day that helped to strengthen the ecosystem of life and the community ties, as Father Jair rightly said at the beginning of the day. Thursday was the responsibility of a great friend of CLAPVI, Andrs Motto, from the Province of Argentina. The topic of the presentation that day was: The Mission of the Congregation of the Mission in Latin America. It was a day of deep reflection where, from an historical perspective, the wealth of our Congregation in its Mission in Latin America was addressed. In the words of the meetings chronicler, Roberto Romero from the Province of Peru, as a synthesis of this event indicates: The conclusion which we reach is that for our dear Founder, mission is, basically, to be with the poor. The meeting concluded on Friday, the 23rd, with the seal of commitment as the extension of this meeting in each of the regions where the CM is in Latin America and the Caribbean. The formative event of this day concluded, as the chronicler indicates for us, with an invitation to recreate our mission, our works, and our provinces. To quote the chronicle: To recreate means to return to making, to reconfigure. The latter word usually makes many tremble. The presenter told us: If Latin America has changed, the Vincentian charism must adapt to these changes, and for that reconfiguration is necessary.

Jubilee of the Centenary in Madagascar

The Province of Madagascar of the Congregation of the Mission, celebrated around the Feast of Saint Vincent, the closing of the jubilee year of 100 years since the erection of this province. In the same way, the Daughters of Charity inaugurated a jubilee year also for the 100th anniversary of their province.

The festivities had the presence of the Superior General, G. Gregory Gay, and the Assistant General, Zeracristos Yosief. There was a large delegation of Vincentian missionaries and hundreds of participants from the different branches of the Vincentian Family. The Solemn Mass was celebrated in Fort Dauphins Cathedral presided by Bishop Benjamin Ramaroson, CM. During the week between 21 and 28 September different activities were carried out, giving prominence to this great feast. Some of these have been mentioned in the activities of the Superior General.

The Vincentian presence in Madagascar was a heroic project begun by our Founder. The pioneers of this Good News were sent in 1648, Charles Nacquart and Nicolas Gondre. We know the enthusiasm that enveloped Saint Vincent for this mission. In a letter addressed to Nacquart on 22 March 1648, he indicates, among other things: Help these poor people to understand the truths of our faith, not by subtle theological reasoning, but by arguments taken from nature . trying to let them see that you are only developing in them the signs of Himself that God has left on them (VDP, CCD, III, 280). As we know, the mission had to be suspended in 1674 due to multiple adverse factors: shipwrecks, kidnappings, diseases, among others.

We give thanks to God for this mission and for the missionaries who opened ways of hope in these lands, such as Saint Vincent made us see: Those men are workers, theyre true Missioners! May God in His goodness be pleased to give us the spirit that animates them, a big heart, vast and ample! (24 July 1655) (VDP, CCD, XI, 192-193).
